Battlefield WHAT?! No thanks, I'd much rather my female human noble be a repressed, stay-at-camp girl who does the cooking along with Leliana whilst Wynne takes care of the Alistair's, Sten's, Oghren's and Zevran's laundry. Morrigan tidies the tents up and sets up the camp fire, which is made a slightly easier because of her magic powers. Once the guys come back from a hard days work It'll be my female human noble and Leliana who give them a foot wash. After which everyone goes by their days normally. Until dinner that is, when all four girls serve out food to Alistair, Sten, Oghren and Zevran.

What? You mean that the female characters are actually going to do fighting? Surely not. where is the realism in that?? I thought they were there just to clean the mens' small cloth, which would have to be done quite frequently considering the terrifying enemies they will have to fight.
But seriously, in the Golden Throne, one of the main female characters is a warrior. However, it states that it is relatively uncommon for females to be warriors, but it is still generally accepted. I like this approach.
In history and mythology, it is rare for females to be warriors in the battle field (with a few exceptions like Jean of Arc and the Amazons, spanish civil war, female partisans in WWII). But they are particually adept at wielding power behind the scenes and underhand murders, especially with poison.

This is especially true in modern combat where men have liitle advantage over women in terms of strength because of technology. Sci-fi usually takes full advantage of this.
In fantasy, medieval combat, I think it is fair to say men would have an advantage on average because they are stronger, can wear heavier armour and can use heavier weapons. I also think that men are more violent in nature (as a generalisation) making hand-to hand combat more challenging for females.
In reality, I think women are most effective in support roles and leadership, using magic or ranged weapons to support the male tanks.
In saying that, we mus remember this is a fantasy world where moden rules and assumptions can be altered quite easily and where culture is different.
As I mentioned previously, the Stolen Throne effectively says there is a culture in ferelden fro women to fight on the battlefield. So in this particular fantasy world, female warriors are a reality.
With regard to the question in the thread, there are two possible answers IMO.
1) Should sexy women be on the battlefield in real life? The answer is no. Of course women can operate effectively on the battlefied, but any women fighting should be dressed to survive the battle, not to look sexy. In fact, as Kingthrall mentions above, it is probably better they do not look sexy.
2) Should sexy women be on the battlefield in a fantasy game like DAO? IMO, the answer is definately yes for its esthetic and entertainment value.

1. Public outcry when young women come home disfigured, missing limbs, and in body bags is still MUCH louder than when it's young men. This is also hardwired into the species because loss of a few males doesn't reduce the ability of the clan to grow and continue, while the loss of females directly impacts on the production of new clan members. In modern warfare, the casualties are a very small percentage of the population, so this position has very little species survival value any more, but instincts and attitudes die hard.
2. Somewhat based on the same argument as #1, when men and women are put into combat together there is a significant chance that stupid and unnecessary heroics will ensue to impress and/or protect someone of the opposite gender.
3. Putting men and women together under stress produces babies. Pregnant women aren't the best combat soldiers -- they're a little awkward, slower than usual, and may need assistance in lifting things. (That's not chauvinistic, either. It's simple facts, as anyone who has ever had the privilege of living with a very pregnant lady knows.) Even if 100% effective precautions are taken to prevent pregnancy, the is still the tension between the favored few (those with partners) and the rest of the force. That goes for both genders, by the way. And of course, some of those liasons aren't necessarily consensual. Rape is rape, and it doesn't enhance combat capability of the unit or the soldier (warrior in our context.)
4. kingthrall has a finger squarely on another reason. In the frenzy of a victory, soldiers (warriors in our context again) want to celebrate. To do that, they may choose to demonstrate their complete control over the defeated, and rape is all about control. This also ties back in to #1, about social attitudes.

This is definately true and one of the reasons these things happen. However, it must also be remembered that there have been times in history where the conquered females have welcomed the conquerors as they have shown themselves to be better then their own men.
When death is all around, it may be that sexual desire is increased, for both men and women. It is natures way of replacing the population.
Often the biggest birth rates are at times of war. I don't think this is a coincidence.

I really, really don't think that war increases sexual desire.... The only reason for increased birth rates i can see, is that you just can't afford the 'young & rich academic couple that wants to get on with it's career'-attitude when your country lies in ruins and almost everyone capable of rebuilding it's future lies dead...Apasas wrote...

I also can't see the point in kinghtralls last argument. Why should the possibility of being raped after battle deter woman from fighting? Ever looked at history? It's not like civilian women were spared...
From that point of view, fighting would have always been the best solution for them.
The main reasons why they didn't, are imho social and physical in nature. Kingthrall named them as well, so i won't do it again
Now back to Chauvinism:police:

Those of you who don't think women belong on the battlefield, these women would like to have a word with you http://wh40k.lexican...depta_Sororitas. I don't think they belong on the battlefield's frontlines but in the back as support and ranged combat or on the sides as ambushers. In real life women are often more intelligent and cunning than men where as men are usually stronger. In fantasy games I feel the combat role of a woman is most suited for magi or rogues where the men fill the role of a brutish berserker or tank more naturally.
Agreed.
Fulgrim88 - I didn't say that war increases sexual desire. I am saying death does.

Anyway, they can do both but are generally better at one of the two in question, guess which.

All I care about is that all the sexy men are cooking for me at the camp--preferably while wearing the same flesh-colored manties they have during the sex cut scenes. This is, of course, after they clean my tent and wash my clothes by the river. It wouldn't hurt if they get into a good, ol' homoerotic splash fight with each other in the process of doing my laundry, either.
