I just recently started playing mass effect with my friend, it's a really interesting game but i have one question. I am currently on ME1 and was wondering in character selection does it affect how you play the game later on and during choosing a path between renegade and paragon?

Not in a significant way, but there are some minor bonuses:
Pre service history:
Spacer: Paragon % bonus
Earthborn: Renegade % bonus
Colonist: Small % bonus of both
Psych profile:
Sole Survivor: During a side quest you can choose a paragon or renegade option that wouldn't otherwise be available, this also grants points in whichever catagory you choose.
War Hero: Paragon points
Ruthless: Renegade points
However, like I said- the bnusses are relatively minor.
