So I "tested" things out on my laptop (flipped off the wireless switch), and I get a warning and the game refuses to load any saved games with DLC content. this is complete crap. I understand teh need to validate DLC, but the game should do it ONCE and only ONCE then never require you to be online again.... or at LEAST require you to talk to the servers once a week
and this whole thing about the game getting corrupted while playing if your internet goes down is crap also.
Come on BioWare. I know you can do something better than this. REQUIRING people to have a CONSTANT internet connect is absolutely absurd.

Exactly what I think too ! Plus it would probably solve most bugs :S
I guess they are doing this to fight piracy but it needs to be reviewed

I agree that its very problematic that you have to be online at all times when using DLC, it really is very unfair to the legit customer. I bet that cracked versions have none of these issues, so basicly all Bioware does is screw the legit customer over. I am pretty pissed about it tbh.

You're not alone with it. Why is it that the legitimate buyers are the punished ones?

However, I think I can tell how it was triggered.
I have had a problem with DLC, that when I first enter the game, it says all enabled. Then after connecting to the servers, it says that some content (Collectors Edition and Stone Prisoner stuff) is disabled (unauthorized). However, if I restart the game, every time it will become authorized.
Unfortunately I didn't know this the first time, and accidently started the game without having all content authorized. This broke Shale, and lost me a few items. Shale's quest line remains broken and I cannot speak with him in camp or elsewhere. (though I did earn an extra Grimoire of the Frozen Wastes when I reauthed my content, so I guess it wasn't all for naught
Now for some reason though, I don't have to log in anymore to use the content, but if I do log in, it will ge unauthorized until I restart.
Please please please stop using this kind of silly authorize every time DRM. It only hurts us legit consumer because it *will* be more buggy than code without it (I know, I have programmed DRM stuff for mobile phones, and well, the number of silly cases that can go wrong to increase exponentially when trying to lock stuff in
Other than this though, kickass game! I'm at the final battle now, and despite the silly DRM problems, I can say that this has been one of my most immersive gaming experiences ever

I don't think that is the problem though. I'm sure the DLCs are being validated. If we go back to an older save, then Shale is fine and warden's peak is on the map. I'm pretty confident that the save files are being corrupted somehow. Perhaps a couple flags being cleared somewhere?

After all the trouble of reinstalling and all that jazz the third time I talked to shale my game started wiggin' out again.
I took my cpu to work (Geek Squad haha) and we all pooled our knowledge
Will post results after work tomorrow.

Yes, i've gotten that, it just means that the DLCs are slow to load.

I had taken the wardens keep quest from levi but not done it, and got shale to join my party. Then i went to the circle tower and am currently doing that, but my game crashed and when i reloaded it my shale items had gone and wardens keep had reset to tell me a merchant was following me and i should make camp. All the usual tricks that have helped a minority of people with this problem didn't work, and the only save game not affected is about 10 hours back. Finally simply disabling all the DLC, quitting the game, starting it up again, enabling the DLC and reloading the game (this was about the 3rd time i'd done this) made the Shale items re-appear, along with another grimoir of the frozen wastes and the promise ring - I'm not sure if i lost the stats from the first grimoir though.
My problem is that i'm still 'stuck' in the circle tower, and it could be hours before I can find out if this has fixed Shale itself. Warden's keep is still telling me to make camp and let the merchant catch up, last time i got this bug and had to load an old save he never turned up, I was hoping it just removed the quest completely and restarted it because i wouldn't mind doing that. Anyway -
Does anybody know if getting the shale items back should mean shale is fixed? More importantly (I wasn't planning on using shale this time through) does anybody know how to completely reset warden's keep quest in the event that is broken? Just forcing Levi to spawn in the camp so i can accept his quest again might do it, but i have no idea how to do that, i assume it can be done with the editor since other things can be spawned in the camp that way (the respec raven mod, the container mod - in case this is important, i wasn't using either of those, i've just seen them on the projects page).

The content updater seem to turn off if you fibble with the game files (installing mods and such) as such you sometimes need to go in and start it again.

Well I dont think you understand what I am trying to say, it has been pretty much established that the bug occurs after the game has lost connection to some sort of validation server, and when you save the game it corrupts all subsequent saves. It's definitely related to you having to be online to even use your DLC, which in my world is completely unreasonable.
Dont get me wrong I think DA:O is an excellent game, I just dont understand why they want to ****** all over us legit costumers that have payed extra for the DLC.
edit: I never lost any Shale items and as a fighter he still works, the game 'just' craps out whenever I talk to him and Wardens Keep is gone from the map. I have never experienced a crash. All my savegames from my first char that completed DA:O works fine with Shale and Wardens Keep fully functioning.

I don't know if this is the problem but, check your downloaded stuff, if they say "Unathorized" you need to exit the game, the open the Run menu (Windows button + R) and type Services.msc and press ok, then you need to find Dragon Age Origins - Content Updater, right click it and start it if it's not started, and that should solve it.

I know now why my friend that runs the cracked version is playing for a second time through the game - he does not have to deal with this crazy DRM system that only harms us - the people who actually paid for the game.

Ok, I've searched through the forums for a while trying to find a definitive fix for this problem.
I'm wandering around orzammar and realised all my weapons from the wardens peak have gone, I've also noticed Shale can no longer be interacted with.
I run the game as admin.
I have also logged in and out of my account to see if that works.
Now every time i log in the game just dies if i try and talk with shale.
Is there a fix for this yet? or is it just sloppy programming?
This happens when you start the game or force load it before it can verify your DLC *OR* you get knocked offline or it can't connect to the servers now and then while you and playing and you save your game not being aware... once you do this YOU ARE SCREWED. The only way to fix this is to go back to a saved game where shale works and you have the items.
A way to prevent this is:
1) before you load a saved game (after starting the game) make sure all DLC says "enabled"
2) once you are playing, if you EVER, and I mean EVER get ANY sort of message about a server error, servers can't be contacted, etc, IMMEDIATELY exit your game w/o saving and reload your last save
3) SAVE AND SAVE OFTEN and DO NOT overwrite save files! On any given playthrough I have 100-150 unique saves just to avoid problems like this so when I do get a server error, I lose no more than 15-30mins play time (I save... a LOT)

Exactly. But I'd say that it need NEVER check in again, after verifying the DLC as valid ONCE.TallBearNC wrote...
They really need to fix this whole crap about HAVING to be online and HAVING to check the DLC when you start the game. The game should only need to "check in" once every few days to a week. Preferable only ONCE
What's the point in verifying it every time you start a game? Say a pirate grabs some illegal DLC. New DLC is installed which triggers the game to connect online to verify it. Let's say that you can't acutally use the DLC until it's verified online. Well, there's your protection.
This online aspect of a non-online game only adds to the problems. I actually won't be buying any more DLC for this game until there's an offline mode for the game. And if that's never, then I suppose I'm done with the game and it was a very good game. I mean, I got Shale for free with the dlx. copy of the game, but I can't enjoy it because the quest reset after having it in my party for a week, and I can't talk to it without being transported to some hole outside the game environment. So I don't trust any of this online verifying DLC junk... why waste more money on something that may be fun for a few days, but then anything I've done in the DLC gets screwed up because of some online server error?

Cue some forum reading later, and I realise my Warden's Peak content is completely borked. Come to think of it, I did see a message at some point about being disconnected from the server... and ignored it. (It's not an MMO!) The content says it's enabled, but the items have gone from my inventory and the location is not on my map. I don't think it's been reset either, because the NPC is not in camp. I want my 70 extra inventory slots back! Suffice to say, I'm not starting the Shale DLC, because I am sure the same thing will happen. I'm loathe to go back to an old save, because, frankly, the Circle Tower took a lot of effort.
I hope a patch can sort this out. Has put me off continuing with the game for now, when only this morning I was thinking how brilliant it was (back to a sense of humour so sorely lacking in Mass Effect). Very upset and this amateurish (not to mention, draconian) DLC implementation is ruining our enjoyment of a wonderful game.
