“My favourite thing, it’s funny when you still see it, but the joke of some of the dialogue systems where it asks, ‘do you wanna do this or this,’ and you say no. ‘Do you wanna do this or this?’ No. ‘Do you wanna do this or this?’ No. Lemme think — you want me to say ‘yes.’ And that, unfortunately, really characterized the JRPG.”

I must be playing a different DA2 where you make choices and create a character. That's not to say I agree with Erickson's narrow definition of an RPG anyhow.

As opposed to the Cousland plastic surgery screen?
Character creation is no different in DA2 than in DAO except there's only one Origin as opposed to six. That one Origin is no more predefined than Origins' were, though.

which is not present in DA 2 obviously. Maybe you're referring to the screen where you can only choose the name and appearance? That's not creating a character, that's customising.

Actually, JRPGs are really restrictive when it comes to the protagonist. You have no role whatsoever in determining your character in most JRPGs. I've played and enjoyed a lot, but there's simply no input from the player in this regard.
Even though DA 2 is moving towards that direction, it's unfair to compare them directly. It's not the same. JRPG character creation is about as flexible as character creation in Assassin's Creed. As in there is none.

So, what you're saying is that no video game ever has had character creation.
Nice to know we're on the same page.
