I must be playing a different DA2 where you make choices and create a character. That's not to say I agree with Erickson's narrow definition of an RPG anyhow.

“My favourite thing, it’s funny when you still see it, but the joke of some of the dialogue systems where it asks, ‘do you wanna do this or this,’ and you say no. ‘Do you wanna do this or this?’ No. ‘Do you wanna do this or this?’ No. Lemme think — you want me to say ‘yes.’ And that, unfortunately, really characterized the JRPG.”

Lol.

My bad, you're still hawke, who is still human, whose choices you apparently are championing are even more worthless than those found in jrpgs. If they can be found at all that is.

Actually, JRPGs are really restrictive when it comes to the protagonist. You have no role whatsoever in determining your character in most JRPGs. I've played and enjoyed a lot, but there's simply no input from the player in this regard.

Even though DA 2 is moving towards that direction, it's unfair to compare them directly. It's not the same. JRPG character creation is about as flexible as character creation in Assassin's Creed. As in there is none.

As opposed to the Cousland plastic surgery screen?

Character creation is no different in DA2 than in DAO except there's only one Origin as opposed to six. That one Origin is no more predefined than Origins' were, though.

Less, actually, since you can be any class, where even the most flexible origins in Origins had only two.

which is not present in DA 2 obviously. Maybe you're referring to the screen where you can only choose the name and appearance? That's not creating a character, that's customising.

So, what you're saying is that no video game ever has had character creation.

Nice to know we're on the same page.

Lol. That's got nothing to do with what my post was about. My post was about the fixed protagonist in many JRPGs.

You realize that Daniel Erickson (the guy quoted) had nothing to do with Dragon Age 2 right?

Every one of those games had a single origin story (like DAII), class selection (like DAII), name creation (like DAII), and appearance customization (like DAII).

What's your point?

Are you really going to take this article seriously? The guy is out of touch with reality.

"Years ago, I doubt anyone could have predicted that Final Fantasy XIII would become something that doesn't even feel like an RPG to some"
