I think all combat scenes are part of the exaggerated story. You can blame Varric for the waves of enemies because he made them all up.

Seriously. Why doesn't snarky!Hawke get to say 'One of these days, the Chantry is going to be very cross about all the dead bodies we keep leaving here'? And I fully expected Hawke at one point to flip a silver to a brother or sister and say 'sorry about the mess.'
