First, I want to say that if you already beat the game then I'd like to see your opinion on DA2 also: No spoilers
I talk about almost only the bad things: btw
I feel like Bioware was rushed when making this game, and it really showed:
reused a lot of textures for weapons and put slightly different stats on them. i got really bored of sifting through all the muck of items, my loot-happy button was not being triggered
a lack of customizable content, goes along with reused weapons. i liked how your companions have the same armor and you upgrade it, because i thought bioware could then focus on the upgrade aspect of it and get rid of all the tediousness of the whole process while adding depth to gearing, crafting, etc. but seems they have even less than the last game (like how there's only 1 type of rune (no grandmasters gere)
reused a lot of maps. i understand that you're in a city, i like how they reused some of the maps, but othertimes (specifically a certain storage area) where completely unrelated quests are all smashed into this one place and it doesn't make sense. in 1 quest it says its some secret smuggling depot, the other it's a villians base and about 2 or 3 more where they shouldn't be using the same maps
buggy as heck. some of them impedingly so, other's.. convinient glitches, mostly they were just plain annoying
the game was short compared to their last one (40 hours isn't really that short... but compared to 120 hours)
a lot of the diehard fans were really dissapointed with the new combat system. i see it as just a way to increase they're range of consumers. you can still get that challenging, stratigaicly-intense gameplay by turning up the difficulty (especially nightmare, friendly fire ouch)
omfg thank you for a voice-acted main character. idc if they used the wheel (it was actually pretty convinient to know how your speech will affect the character with the symbol in the middle as an indicator). about 80% of all the lines were good to downright amazing voice acting. there were some out there that just had me embarressed, but they were few and far between.
HOWEVER, facial...wow...yup they're still terrible. that almost doubles animation costs to get some good facial expressions in because it has to be very precise, but wow... yeah it was terrible. sometimes it ruined some really good dialogue
i see why they didn't have multiple races, but that means they could have added so much more depth to the game. where there were a lot more reprocussions. don't get me wrong, there were some here and there, but with lack of character custmization they really could have opened up a whole new level of choices with consequences thing going on, especially with 10 years to work up to
Bioware made way for a lot of potential in this game by getting rid of some aspects of DA1. I don't want to say it didn't pay off because it's still a great game and I'd definitely pay $60 for it, but they let the potential go to waste. You end up with a game with a lot of things cut out with nothing to show for it. However, it seems that potential can be easily based to DA3.
This game seemed like the calm before a storm. A preleude to something much bigger, and hopefully greater. All in all, I don't think people should be rating this with numbers since it seems to be merely a stage-setter for the third (and I assume final) Dragon Age game.
