No.

This.

No one f-ing likes to grind in video games. Especially in WRPGs. That's for JRPGs.

In most cases in JRPGs it's purely optional. There is usually some potion, item or skill that turns off the basic encounters.Or they are set in such a way that you can dodge the indicators on the map.

I defy to say that again with Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, Nightmare mode.

One of the demons has such a skill. If you mean grinding is required in nightmare mode, well that's why it's called nightmare mode. It's optional.

I've never had to grind in any JRPG for the main story.Bonus monsters, that's different but it's just that, a bonus.

Fade in Origins was horrible. The concept was alright, but the execution was painful on following playthroughs.

Deep Roads was okay in Origins. I don't mind when they make the dungeons this long if they keep me interested, and for some reason I was really into the game when exploring the deep roads.

As I said, I don't mind the long scrawling dungeons, but I also do not mind that they are gone. I just wish like pretty much everyone that they hadn't reused the same 5 or so maps.

I didn't mind the Fade the first time through on Origins. If you replay it several times, it gets...annoying. The Deep Roads were also pretty long. When you've played the game through once, twice, thrice, it stops being exciting and it starts to be a hinderance. After the first couple of times through it stops being about the journey/experience and more about the ending that you get by tweaking variables.

I don't mind how western RPGs are changing to have less long combat areas and more combat areas in general. It's actually a pretty nice change. I'd normal complain that it's getting a little bit too much like First Person Shooters (see: Bethesda's RPGs, and Mass Effect), but I'm not willing to go down the "CHANGE IS BAD" route. Change brings about new things, some of which are good, some of which are ill. But you'll never know if you don't make that jump!

I loved both the deep roads and the fade. I liked all the stuff going on down in the deep roads, the hugeness of it, all the exploration you could do, plus it looked awesome. You really felt like you were deep underground in the ruins a lost civilization. I liked the multiple boss battles, Hespith's creepy song followed by the broodmother was really creepy, especially if you were a female dwarf noble...that could have been you if Duncan hadn't been there. I liked meeting the legion of the dead and learning about them, and seeing the legion hall full of ghosts. With the fade, I loved figuring everything out, it was like a puzzle. I liked seeing all the different levels and finding the stat fonts. It was also fun to see your companion's dreams. They are both long yes, but if you're using haste it's no problem at all :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the size of it and potential convolutedness the whole point of the Deep Roads section in Origins? That and some of the best fights in the game. I love the Deep Roads. Whenever I go through Origins I always do it last, before finally heading off to Denerim, in order to give my party setup a test run.

When I compare the relatively small section in DA2, I want to cry. The expedition is supposed to be such a big thing and yet we don't even scratch the surface of what the Deep Roads in Origins were. Heck, I think even Awakening did it better.

The Fade might have been a bit grind-y the second time around and further down, but that was mostly because of its puzzle-like nature. It was still head and shoulders above DA2 Fade, which is short and only mildly engaging in comparison. Honestly, I played mage in Origins and DA2 mostly because of the impression the Fade sections left with me after my first time through the former as another class.

I really hope Bioware gives us more Deep Roads/Fade in DLC.

Youre not alone.

Saying that I miss everything about Origins, the thought and love that went into that game is obvious to anybody.

Dragon Age 2 did it more right than Origins did. Not only with regards to dungeon length, but also with the distance to Civilization. I absolutely hate the parts in RPGs where I feel isolated and cut off from the world for extended periods of time.

I also really like the fact that I can run around Kirkwall during the day and not have to worry about being ambushed by darkspawn, qunari, or gangs. In Origins, Denerim was nice to an extent, but I hated how I would constantly be ambushed traveling to different zones within the city. At least in DA2, I can control this by switching between night and day, or just straight up wiping out the gang's hideout.

The Fade was actually good the only thing I hated was how slow it was to swap forms.

The Roads OTOH were a whip and a half that I never want to see again followed closely by the Brecillian Ruins. Any time a designer needs to give you  a short cut out of a dungeon in order to dump your loot they've really gone too far.

I like food analogies better.

DA:O  = Porterhouse steak, 3 side dishes, and an ice cold beer
DA:2   = Big mac, fries, and a diet coke - to go.

DAO was too much filler breadsticks and not enough steak. DAO is great inspite of the dungeons where you spend most of your time, not because of it.

Do I miss the deep roads from Da:O? Well, long, dark, mysterious, "into-the-bowels-of-the-earth" descending dungeons are a fantasy staple and a favorite of almost any rpg fantasy rpg aficionado when done right. Were the deep roads as good as Durlag's Tower from Totsc, or Watcher's Keep from ToB? Perhaps not, but they sure kicked the CRAP out of Da2's recycled, 1 floor dungeons

EDIT: come to think of it, I guess the deep roads expedition was DA2's dungeon crawl. Incidentally, while it still suffered from the same probems that affected the whole title, it was probably my favorite portion of the game. Not as atmospheric or epic as Dao's deep roads though

Ahh, the Deep Roads...

What fond memories rise up.

Snarling at my kids to get their own bloody dinner

Jumping a mile high, screaming when my cat jumped into my lap during Helspith's recital

Shedding a tear or 3 for Ruck

Jerking back from the computer, while my heart lept into my throat after seeing the brood mother

Looking at the clock to see 4:30 AM blinking at me, and me only then realizing I pulled an all-nighter

The list goes on. I loved, and still love the Deep Roads. The Fade is ok. I can get through that real fast now, and being on a PC I can even get a mod that cuts it out, but I don't need it.

Grinding and exploration are different things.

In DA2 while in the deep roads it never realy felt like I was far from home, which for me was a bad thing. I like a sense of adventure.

Ahh didnt realise we were onto analogies before I posted, ok;

DAO: A wife. Sometimes you will get annoyed but your love easily outweighs this.

DA2: A hooker. It just wants your money and gives you some cheap thrills in return.

Not as long as DA:O, but also not as short as in DA2. If you fart at the start of DA2 dungeons you can still smell it at the exit. The problem of long grinds can be alieviated but having intermediate exits or rest areas. DA:O had great parts in dungeons which would seem kind of silly in DA2. Like finding the broodmother near the surface instead of way down.

I liked the Fade. It was a big huge dungeon maze puzzle that had multiple approaches to solving, with lots of little secret passages with extra goodies. Wish they had those in DA2 (or Mass Effect).

The dungeons in DA2 are of a fine length - the Bone Pit for example, the entire sequence of going in and fighting the boss - that's a good length.

The only problem is the recycling of the maps.
