What makes the game change you family's faces. Is it dependant on how you character looks in the character creater?

Not sure. I've gotten 3 ugly bethanys, one incredibly hot one. Would be good to know how its calculated.

That chart is somewhat out-dated since it's based on the demo. There are a few more variations in the actual game. I don't tihnk there is an updated chart for the actual game yet.
Roughly it depends on your preset (note: the preset - so if you diverge amazingly from the preset you might end up with an odd-looking family). Skin colour will also reflect on that of your family. Oddly enough, your hairstyle also seems to affect it but I am unsure of that at this point.

That chart also doesn't include Gamlen. You could be rocking with the perfect-looking Hawke brood and then you hit Kirkwall and see Gamlen for the first time… and it's game over, man, game over!

I think it's the Preset that you choose determines what faces they have.
I thought it was the preset because I used one preset with two different games and they had the same family faces; even though I completely changed it in the second one after making it in my first one with that preset.
I don't think our playing with the colours and skin and all that change the family features at all. I think it's all the preset. Cause when I made the skin darker, Beth's and Carver's skin was much lighter.

I would like very much to get my hands on that updated chart, cuz from what I see if you go from the 3 first presets you family is just...... well... not pretty just hurts the eyes.
I did notice that somethings in common though, skintone is obvious, but if you notice default Hawke (Male/Female) each have an eye color that matches Carver/Bethany so if you use an identical eye color to said sibling the game changes, I tried this once when I used the same eye color as Bethany and then she changed to blue eye color, so dont know how far the game changes your sibling depending on your Hawke but the subtle changes are there.

Once you start altering a preset you can't change that preset.
So I don't think your family would change if you used that mirror :/.

Nope, you can use the mirror in anyway you want it will not affect your family in anyway its only the one at the beginning of the game.

There's a thread posted about a month ago that dealt with this already. The pictures are for the Male Presents, and the female ones corresponds accordingly ( i.e. Male Preset 1 to Female Present 1).
Here you go.
Cheers.
