Never heard about this ... Witcher ... please tell us

The Witcher was an RPG based off a novel series in Poland. It was really popular in Poland and a game was made. Sales were expected to be low but reviewers and gamers found it to be really really good and it sold very well throughout Europe and America. So much a sequel was demanded. The game has you playing Geralt the White Wolf, a sort of sarcastic deadpan snarker and not very happy Witcher (monster hunter). While you can't really customize his looks there are dialog options and one very complex alchemy system.

Especially the alchemy. Only game i've played where I can have a potion on me incase of any thing. I love being crazy prepared.

I was being a little sarcastic (i know, its hard to tell on the interwebz) :wizard: but thx for the info anyway

Oh well drat.

Another site I go to its the norm for people to use italics to convey sarcasm. I'm so accustomed to it that if something isn't in italics I don't read it as sarcasm.

Oddly enough I found out about the first Witcher from a Bioware newsletter, I never did figure out why Bioware were promoting someone elses game.

mhhhhh... the first dragon age was more mature and darker.. DA2 have nice mature elements the shame its the art direction that totally destroy them with fleshy anime anims.. exploding bodyes and ennemy rain... that make dragon age 2 mature elements collaps

I'll be interested to see what fan reaction to Witcher 2 will be. I wonder if we'll see the same number of "dialogue wheel" complaints that we see with DA:2. From what I hear Witcher 2 uses a system very close to DA:2

I'm really looking forward to The Witcher 2 (it's one of the reasons I've reinstalled the first game, other than disappointment w/ DA2, that is).

From what I've seen, vids and screens, it's looking to be another solid game from CDPR.

I kinda wish that BioWare, for DA2 (and DA:O, then), would've learned some of the things that CDPR did w/ The Witcher, in terms of visuals and atmosphere. Oh well.

The original Witcher was build on the NWN/Aurora engine. Hence there was a "Bioware recommends the Witcher" pitch when it was released.

Also your potions carry levels of toxicity depending on what you use as the basic ingredients, and too much toxicity has you reacting like a heart attack victim.  Great stuff!!!

Yes have a dialogue system like that but is not a true problem per se.. Even the first one haved some paraphrased line and in the witcher you have a total premaded character and you are not supposed to create one this makes the difference.. When you puchase the witcher you know you have a premaded and well writed and designed character... Dragon Age is born with the classic formula.. Create your hero and be a part of a great story... In the sequel the story is more personal but not so much well written... In fact many quests or situation are very bland and this policy to streamlize rpg games don't help... The witcher have also a identity... DA2 maded lose the identity of Dragon age world due to drastic design changes... They modify the appearance of a race and in a story thing like that can ruin all..The elves are a nice example,,In the first game they looked like more human like in the second one they are like anorexing gremlings... Imagine if in the second movie of the lord of the rings they change the appearance of elves like is happen in dragon age 2...

It's not coherent with the lores and that make a sort of meh effect..

And also this... Dragon age with this "sequel" lose a lot of athmosphere...

Interesting, never heard of this one. Is there some sort of high res texture replacer available for this?

I watched a gameplay video on youtube  and I'm now downloading the Steam demo to try it.

Also looking forward to TW2, as I pre-ordered a few months ago.

Now if DA3 were like this, amazing!!!!

This I have to disagree on for just a few things: the combat doesn't look like my type of thing, there isn't a whole lot of actual CONVERSATIONS in the way that DA:O had (DA2 lost a lot of that magic, FYI bioware, maybe try to bring back some elements of the old system, such as more complex conversation paths and doublespeak) and the sex part...

well, the sex and cursing REALLY got on my nerves in the original witcher. It was disappointing because aside from that, it was a fun game, but when you can pretty much screw anything on legs and adjectives are essentially f-bombs, it gets tiresome very quickly. I did like, however, the way that decisions effected the storyline--where you would tell some guy to shove off and later say to yourself oh, balls when he goes and shoots your buddy, or something like that.

Another pro was the way that sex scenes were handled. Bioware, you're getting the right idea by making sex scenes different and more intimate, but lacking any full "tasteful" nudity (i.e. the character is obviously naked, but the most the player might see is a backside shot) leaves me feeling a little disappointed. I'm not some weirdo getting my jollies from watching digital characters have a go at it, I really just enjoy some form of nudity for better immersion.

What I'd really like to know is this: do all the folks who dislike the forced Hawke character automatically dislike the Witcher series? Because that's like half the forum.

No, I dislike Hawke and really like the Witcher, but I think that is the point.  When a developer makes a role playing around a single character they are taking a great risk that said character doesn't appeal to the player.

I do think that it was better handled in the thread above where the similarities were clearly spelled out.

I see your point, however we can take this discussion to "Off Topic" Forum . There are some already nice discussions going on towards RPGs of this year 2011

I remember the first time playing the Witcher screwing up majorly just after the first chapter, got one of the main quest givers for the next chapter killed by the very jackass elves I was trying to help. F the elves. Anyway looking forward to this, perma death, heh maybe on a second play through.
