Its more so because of how the timeline works as to why they're doing the story this way. (DAO+DAA happening concurrently with DA2).
It would be more silly if you had DA2 following the wardens story then going back and playing Hawkes.
To me it looks like we're going to hit a point where the two games merge (probably with Hawke being the lead) and we'll have a mix of companions from both + new ones.
So they aren't really delaying Morrigans story to interject Hawkes, i think its more so like they're giving you the other part of the story before they do the end.
I agree with you in retrospect. I am beginning to see now their intentions (hopefully) or starting a new direction for war among the nations, faiths and magic in order to merge what has been narrowly crafted in the storytelling of DA2 with the events of the Warden's story.
Following a discussion with Mike Laidlaw recently on DA3 (I speak of it elsewhere in a thread "Dragon Age 2 Upcoming DLC. Hawke story continues.") i'm led to believe however that there's a good chance Hawke's story will be wound up through DLC and expansions similar to the Warden's and it's likely a new character will be brought in for the lead - assuming a mass outpouring from the fans doesn't make them change their mind.
I think DA3 could be set to be truly epic and more so than just a finale as part of a trilogy. This is strongly hinted at in a few posts by a bioware lead writer elsewhere. I believe their intention at this point is to create a string of games all with interweaving narratives, because of course no games company wants to let go of something promising which is selling well. Let's just hope it continues to get the following and figures it deserves.
