recently bought Mass Effect 1 for my PC, but framerates are really choppy, and when you try to override doors, it lags to the point of freezing.   My PC specs are as follows:

Processer:   Intel Celeron CPU  2.53 GHz, 1CPU, 1 Core,
Clock speed:  2533 MHz
Physical Memory 1.49 GB
Display Adapter:  ATI Radeon  HD 4600    VRAM 1.00 GB
Driver Version: Catalyst 11.2, current version
Windows XP Home
DirectX 9.0c (aug 2008)

currently set at  640x480
with particle effects low and texture details low, shadows, vsync off

any help is appriciated, if you need any more info about my computer let me know what you need.

Your CPU is the bottleneck. Turning down details was a good idea (though I don't know that reducing textures will help, and some people say the game actually runs slower at lower texture levels). Beyond that, though, all I can suggest is getting a better CPU.

Is that a laptop you are playing on? That would explain the bad performence much better as i've seen seval single core CPU's run Mass Effect just fine. In general laptop CPU's and intergrated graphics can be very weak versions of their desktop versions.

Your computer is too weak to run this game at highest details.

It's too weak to run at the lowest settings.

Seriously, the Celeron is like 9 years old now. Save up your money and get a decent Core 2 Duo.
