Okay, I have really tried hard to figure out how to fix this, and I need help. I apologize if the answer is somewhere out there to be found, but I've been looking.
I am trying to run Mass Effect on my PC. I downloaded it from EA using the download manager. It says "Ready to Play", but after the config screen, when I press "Play", the game tries to load (my screen goes black) but then it kicks me back to the desktop and I receive the error message "Mass Effect has stopped working" and then "A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly".
The only suggested fix I was able to find on the tech support site was to turn off user account control and run it that way. I tried it, and I rebooted my PC and all, but it made no difference. I got the same problem when I tried to "run as administrator" as well.
I will put my system details below, but I think I might have had a problem when downloading this game that might be the culprit, so I will explain what happened first:
My download seemed to be frozen somewhere around 60%, and I tried to pause it and then unpause it to get it to wake up. Well, when I did that, it suddenly said "ready to install". I thought that was weird but I went ahead with the installation. I figure it wouldn't have been able to install if it hadn't downloaded correctly? When it was ready to play, I launched it and had no problems with the menu. However, when I hit "play" it crashed on me, so I uninstalled the program (from the Mass Effect menu) and downloaded it again. I went away from my computer for several hours and when I came back it said "ready to play" (I don't know whether the download reached 100% or not). No option to install it, and no prompt for the key either.
So the same crash happened and yet again I uninstalled and re-downloaded the game. Exact same as before, it just says "Ready to play", there has been no "ready to install". One thing I find weird is that the size of the Mass Effect folder is only 10.3 gigs, but I recall that it was supposed to take up more space than that, like 14 gigs? So I feel like there is some missing data. And I don't know why the uninstall doesn't seem to work properly.
My system details:
Windows Vista Home Premium with SP2 (64-bit)
Intel® Core 2 Duo CPU T5800 @ 2.00 GHz 2.00 GHz
4.00 GB RAM
Display adapter Mobile Intel® 4 Series Express Chipset Family
VRAM 1.79 GB
Driver version 7.15.10.1511
Sound adapter Realtek High Definition Audio
Driver version 6.0.1.5653
DirectX 11 (According to DirectX Diagnostic Tool. However, according to Mass Effect configuration tool I have version 10 [?])
If it's worth anything, DA2 has been running glitch-free on my system, although I have to play with the lowest settings and it's a bit laggy still.
I really want to play this game so I very much appreciate any and all help. Thanks!

I can't tell you about the installation, but the Intel Graphics Chip is below minimum requirements for the game. Crashing like you describe is what happens for most people who try to run the game on any Intel GPUs but the latest bleeding edge.
