I haven't been to act 3 enough to really get a handle on where the "best" equipment is. I was lucky enough for my rogue to find his daggers last playthrough, and I'm wondering about good one-handers/Shields for my Vanguard i'm starting up.

Is there a complilation of newbie information somewhere that i've missed? I suppose I may just need to explore more instead of just doing quests, as I often see videos of bosses I didn't know existed (Hubris, Xebenkeck...wut).

Any help on gear advice or am I simply missing the obvious.

The Piggyback people have a preview for their guide. Among the things in the preview, there is a full list of Weapon and Shield and where you get each.

And where might I go to find their guide?

I see, as in a paperback strategy guide. I was expecting something collective on the forums, and thus checked there first. I was more asking if there was a guide available already (forum or site found) that I could be referred to. If not, then I can do the work myself, I just wanted to check here beforehand.

Thanks for posting ^^

Maybe this will be of help, though  not directly aimed at a Vanguard:

As far as armor goes, you can't go wrong with the Champion Armor set.

For the rest, it sort of depends what you want to do. There are two good elemental weapons that you can use for Act 3 if you don't want a physical damage weapon. A fire damage one the Arishok drops, and an electrical one Hybris drops. If you go this route you want to get items that compliment their respective elemental damage. Like the Volcanic shield sold in the gallows which boosts fire damage.

In general just check the out of the way shops for the better unique items. Black Emporium, Nexus Golem, mage guy on the wounded coast, vendor beneath the docks at night. They'll have the best/most expensive stuff usually.
