So I have been playing Dragon Age:Origins since its release and always thought it was a fairly linear game. Yeah I could choose who I recruited in what order and whether or not I would pick up an optional party member. I bought the official game guide about a year ago thinking that maybe I was missing something because everyone I spoke with said the game was absolutely not linear. Eh, not much difference in the guide from what I was able to decipher my choices were in playing but I liked having a list of who received what for gifts and personal quests and such.
I recently joined these forums and have been looking at the Wiki. I don't have to kill either Connor or Isolde? I can actually get the Mage's Circle to help and no one dies? What the heck else can I do that's considerably different? I guess I've played pretty linearly. Haven't figured out how to recruit the werewolves, followed the guide and still didn't work :/ other than that?
Has anyone else run into anything like this? Played for a while then either did a little research or chose a completely different dialogue options from their norm and got shocked by what outcome was possible?
I strongly dislike the official game guide...

Personally, I never used my guide. My ex gave it to me around the same time as he gave me the awakening guide. I find the game more enjoyable since I found out all the secrets myself. I didn't find out untill my second playthrough I could save connor and Isolde. No one mentioned the mages! Imagine my surprise when Alistair raged all over me at the camp. As far as the werewolves, I figured it out on my dalish playthrough, I can tell you if you really want to know.

I guess what is meant with the non-linear bit is that the order in which you go through the several areas is open to you.
The start is linear; you do your origins bit - one of the six starts - then Ostagar - Korcari Wilds - Tower of Ishal - Flemeths Hut - Lothering. Yeah, that's pretty fixed.
But after that the world is open to you and you can more or less skip over the map in any way you want. The game hints you to go to Redcliffe first, after Lothering, but you can just as well travel to Denerim or the Dalish first. It's up to you.
Oops, now I see the first post in this thread is already a month old - ah well, it was bumped anyway.
I find this walkthrough very pleasant to use if I'm in doubt about something:

*Trying to avoid spoilers here* You have two outcomes in the Mages' circle, four with Connor and Isolde, three with the Dalish, two with the Dwarves and about half a dozen at the Landsmeet depending on class/skills/friendships/previous dialogues, then there's five or so possible outcomes/ways to kill the giant dragon - that's not including side outcomes that are part of the larger quests.SurroundedSita wrote...

I'm sure the o.p. isn't checking this post anymore, but I'll post anyway.
I also got the official guide with my copy of the game. While it was a nice start, I found the guide to be lacking, and the character builds were pitiful.
They suggest that an offensive mage goes with the shapeshifter spec and that warriors shouldn't make taunt a priority. I couldn't help but notice in almost all of the pictures, Wynne is dead or getting pummeled. Perhaps taunt could have helped?
The info on tactics was a big help though. I was able to pick up tactics quicker than most, and I feel comfortable fully customizing my companion's tactics setups.
Other than the tactics section and the side quest section in the book, I'd instead suggest going to the wiki site.
