I recently reinstall my Baldur's gate games, and then install the BWP to add new NPCs, kits, adventures, etc. And yet, with all that new content, I am still unhappy unless I carry the "usual five" NPCs: Imoen, Khalid, Jaheira, Minsc and Deinher. I simply can't break away from this mod. I am emotionally attached to these characters, and have been for 12 or so years now.
Does any one else have this issue, or one similar?

I do tend towards the same NPCs. If you want to freshen things up a bit, but still use the same NPCs why don't you use Level 1 NPCs to change them, e.g. Imoen - bard, Khalid - fighter/mage, Jaheira - monk, Minsc - berserker and Dynaheir - wild mage?

I always thought that Minsc's strange battlecrys of joy were a real highlight of the game. "Buttkicking for goodness" and "We are heroes, you and boo and I! Hamsters and rangers everywhere, rejoice!!!"

Yeah, well in BG2 he is definatly a lot better as a character.

I always dump Khalid & Jaheira for Kivan & Branwen.

Have you tried them with the banter pack? Maybe I should give that a whirl. Minsc and Dyna are more "staples" to me than Khalid and Jeheira. Can either one of them tank? Khalid is my tank now, and with -3 AC and a +1 longsword, he keeps enemies interested while my all ranged party cuts them down.

Kivan kills almost everything before they get even anywhere near the party. He's also interesting to have around together with Viconia. Viconia has the advantage of high AC and magic resitance, though Branwen is much more sturdy.

I prefer Lilarcor to any of the Bioware Vanilla NPCs at this point.

I feel your pain. I generally start with K&J and Immy. I'll do most of my adventuring before picking up Minsc and Dynaheir so I have an open spot or two for other NPC.
It gets worse when I get to SOA. It just doesn't feel right without Jaheira and Imoen.

Well, i've tried your advice, and along with the banter pack, i'm enjoying it greatly! Kivan is always moaning about the stars or something, and Branwen is all buy flashing me and grabbing my junk in the name of Tempus, even though i'm throwing in for a Dynaheir romance.
BG2 is easier to me, because all the best NPCs dont' come in pairs.

Man, I'm in the same rut.
I always try to follow the storyline from TOSC thru SOA/TOB. Even when I go from TOSC to SOA I keep the story going.
In BGI and really like Kivan, and to a lesser extent, Ajantis but using the usual suspects leaves no room. I wouldn't mind a Kivan, Khalid, Minsc, Ajantis, Branwen mix but I'll nexer do it.
Worse still, even with the flexibility in BGII usually stick with the same NPC adds including keeping Yoshimo and either Anomen, Nalia (Fighter Stronghold), Aerie or Keldorn.
What's up with that? I think if the game didn't have a storyline I'd do better but even then I'd probably end up with the same general cast of characters.

Same problem here ... I'm a bit more flexible in BG1, but in BG2 I simply *must* take Jaheria and Aerie and Minsc... and I take Imoen along whe she's available. Leaving one character slot. Which I use to rotate people through, which for many cases makes story sense. I help out Keldorn and send him back to his family. Free Mazzy and then she goes home, etc.

I just REFUSE to leave Immy behind. She is my sis after all.
-> make that 4 slots left.
I like taking Aerie and Jaheira with me, because I usually need that extra healing, and casting power when Immy is not around.
-> make that 2 slots left.
Last, I take Minsc & Boo with me for a while, because well, I can get sentimental, and that big fella is just great to have about (be it only for the party banter), but I don't hesitate to switch him out for any other (modded) character that I want to try out, and keep till the end.
-> make that 1 slot left.
Last spot is filled for questing purposes, no character really calls it for good.

I recently installed Baldur's Gate on my brand new desktop gaming computer. This shall be the fourth attempt at a complete playthrough. In each of the previous adventures I had Imoen, Khalid and Jaheira as definite staples of the party. Branwen or Yeslick (never both) would also be included. And as I had the player character always set as a Ranger the final spot would then be filled by a Mage. Xan on two occassions. Dynaheir on one - Minsc suffered fatal wounds in a battle with Gnolls. May he rest in peace.
I never could find a place for Minsc. And it was much the same for Ajantis, Kivan and Coran. I always play good alignment (neutrals can fit) which removes all evil characters from the running.
But on my current playthrough my party lines up as such:
Fighter (Aiming for a Berserker in BG2 thus the choice)
Kivan
Branwen (To be replaced by Yeslick)
Coran
Safana
Imoen
I parted ways with Jaheira and Khalid after clearing the Nashkel Mines. I look at it along the lines of our common goal had came to a conclusion (albeit one needing further investigation) and they had successfully helped me find my way on the Sword Coast after Gorion's untimely passing. So it was an easy fit, and on good terms.
Safana came in to provide cover for Imoen while she dual-classes to a Mage. And she will remain until either Imoen regains her Thief skillset or Coran becomes as adept at finding traps and opening locks. Safana's departure will leave an open position. I could keep Branwen along with the recruitment of Yeslick. Or I could bring Xan, Garrick, Ajantis or Faldorn into the fold.
Finally I experience the different NPC's!

Why are you playing vanilla BG1 rather than Tutu or BGT? Just for authenticity?

As far as who I always party up with... Minsc and Jaheira just feel like they are ment to be in the party. After all what happens in SoA makes it down right hard not to take em along if your playing anything but evil.

Nostalgia. Affinity.
I am not playing purely vanilla, though. I installed Tales (and patched) before sprinkling a handful of mods into the mix - those being a BG1 Fixpack, Unfinished Business, a Text Update, a Max HP tweak and a zip file of custom portraits. I tried the widescreen mod before reverting back to the standard old resolution. I honestly prefer it, as insane as that may be. Even with a 21" 1920 x 1080 monitor.
I have never tried Tutu. My only explanation for this is that I have yet to experience Baldur's Gate 2. Thus I have no want for a change to the engine or the resolution. I own BG2, and I have done for coming on a decade now, but I never once installed it as I never managed to complete a playthrough of the original. I assume that once I get a taste for BG2 it shall be difficult to play the original without Tutu. But at this time any change just feels foreign and unwarrented. And I have to finish at least one playthrough straight up, if purely for the experience and the authenticity.

Wow, and I thought I was bad about not completing games!
You're right about the BG->BG2 experience. If you've never played BG2, BG1 is perfectly fine. I don't remember anything that I used to tear my hair out over. But once you get used to the better graphic resolutions and little features in BG2, it's hard to go back.
I like the BGT approach, personally. One giant, seamless(ish) game.
Back on topic, (even though I replied to this months ago already), I recently realized I like rpgs in proportion to the number of memorable/likable characters. Which is why I rarely juggle my party members for a new experience. I'm coming back, at root, for the characters, so throwing them away would make me not want to play.
