Hello all,

Finally I am at a point in life to have the time to enjoy Dragon Age Origins and have a quick question in regards to Blood Mages. I know from reading around quite a bit that there is only one way to unlock the Blood Mage specialization but I am wondering if it's possible to force an unlock in some way with the developer console on the PC?

I know that you can use the console to enable a specialization on a character directly but I am hoping there is some way to force an unlock for the entire game, as if you played through the story to unlock it? It seems possible to me since it is the developer's console... I would think that all it really is at the end of the day is a line of code stating to enable that specialization... am I wrong?

If I understand correctly it seems you can unlock it in Awakening and it's available from then on in the Origins campaign as well, but people seem to go back and forth on that one and I would really prefer to wait on Awakenings until after I have finished all my characters if possible.

The reason I am asking about this is because of the way I intended to play through the game, a good mage - a neutral rouge - and an evil warrior. I had intended this way with 3 character personalites before I ever started playing and didn't worry about checking guides or cheats becuase I assumed they wouldn't lock you into one specific path on something like that... It's never been that way in any other game I played, even the ones that claim consequences and repercussions etc.I was wrong and I am hoping to get it so my run through with evil characters can include a Blood Mage. I passed on Reaver this time though as well because it's all about the good guys on my first run and that is fine since I can pick that one up with my evil warrior. If I could use another mage on my evil play through to get it then that would be fine  as well but since my main character would be a warrior it seems if I am reading things correcly that it will be barred to me then as well.

I would prefer to unlock from the console, but will settle for playing Awakenings earlier than intended if that will work, I would just like to confirm what IS possible from someone who is knowledgable. I apologize if this post is redundant to old ones. I did make an attempt to look through the forum for about an hour but all the related posts I found were people arguing back and forth and tended to be rather old with conversations about "maybe in th future" sprinkled around to keep everything nicely confusing.

I just wanted to enjoy the game to the fullest and for me that does not include playing as a mage a second time for another 4-6 hours just to unlock one specialization. I have never played a game that limited you on a basic game mechanic like this with only one chance in a very specific scenario and have long since saved over any game that would put me back in that area to unlock it real fast. Since I don't read the guides unless I am getting close to the end of the game without finding some stuff, I had no idea I would be this confined and so would appreciate some quick info.

On the philsophical side :D  I am sorta dissapointed about this choice in the game design. I understand the viewpoint of choices and consequences but if we're going for a certain level of realism then I feel that it should be possible to acquire something like this through at least a couple more ways. Granted they treat the topic in game like a great taboo so it makes sense storywise that it would be hard to find but then there are many blood mages that you fight so the information shouldn't be THAT hard to acquire if so many practice it in the game world. It would be nice if you could infiltrate a blood mage coven or threaten it out of another blood mage at some point instead. Contextually something like the Arcane Warrior specialization makes sense to only have one chance because it states that it's a long lost art in game and you bascially get it through what would be highly unusual circumstances in the game world. From a story perspective it just doesn't make sense to me be limited on this one and certainly not from a game mechanic viewpoint, not a game that takes so long to play through. Besides, it is a game after all and it's supposed to be about enjoyment. My abliity to fully complete the game has been restricted just by my playing style and there was no information without hopping on a guide etc in game to indicate that I will not be able to get this any other way. I wish the desire demon had made some comment about never being able to find another teacher for the skill or something in game, even a pop up warning to take the choice seriously or some internal dialouge of your character stating they think this chance is rare and should really be thought out.

I know it's a dead horse I'm beating, sorry to dredge it up again. It's my first time playing through though so it's new to me ;). Thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to answer my question. Just to clarify my primary question is if it's possible to unlock the specialization globally through the developer console, not just for an individual character.

i don't know anything about trying to unlock a specialization via the developers console, not saying it's not possible, i, personally, just don't know anything about it. but, one thing you can do is this; save the game right before you confront the desire demon in the fade. go through and make the choice to learn the blood mage specialization. once you unlock it (it should unlock it globally for all characters, companions and future character playthroughs), just load the game you just saved (prior to confronting the desire demon for the last time), and it still should be unlocked, only this time, you can continue progressing your character's morality the way you have been.

i did this to unlock the reaver specialization for warriors. once i got it, i loaded my previous save and proceeded to play my character upon whatever morality of my choosing.

You should be able to unlock the specialisation in awakening quite quickly. At the very start you're thrust into a fairly brief dungeon, but once that's completed you should be able to travel straight to the tavern in amaranthine to buy the tome. There will be a few spoilers though.

Alternatively, if you have a save near confronting the demon, then just load that, talk to it to get the blood mage spec, then quit. Your most recent save should then have it unlocked, while still taking the "good guy" route.

The "good guy" route means trading Connor's soul for a talent tome, right?

Thanks guys, I appreciate the info.

It looks like I will have to do it via the Awakening expansion. I only keep 4 saves running and alternate between those and I have long since passed the chance to reload a save and get the skill from the Desire demon. I had thought at the time that I might be able to learn it from Jowyn later and even picked to just let him go when talking to the Arl of Redcliffe thinking that might be a possibility to snag it, but that didn't work out. I assumed there would be at least 2 or 3 ways though so didn't think much of it at the time. I got on here to look for answers as I am approaching the end of the game I believe and am trying to tie up loose ends, much too late I am afraid haha!

I will just wait until I finish Origins and go ahead and do the Awekening campaign with my mage, that way all the specializations will be open for the other two characters at least. Thanks again guys!

If anyone who has played with the console in the meantime knows if there is a way to globally unlock the specializations please let me know. With my work schedule it will be a week or so before I can finish the game, even if I am close the ending.

I think you could also imtimidate the Desire demon into releasing Connor, and giving you blood mage specialization ?

Either the specialization or the tome, yes. Which is why DA:O is one of the few games where maxing diplomacy (Coercion) counts as powergamey.

You can also buy a lot of specializations early on in Awakening, if you have it.
