I just would like to start out saying I’ve never played Never winter Nights or any of the Balders Gate games, I was never a hard core RPG player, I did play Oblivion (hated it) I think the closest game I’ve ever played to this was Dungeon Siege II (loved that game) but I don’t think it was very popular. Anyway…
To say the least I really sucked at this game, I couldn’t even beat the first Darkspawn you meet in the forest at Ostegar (SP?) . I knew I was doing something wrong….I am no idiot, I have been playing games for over 30 years (anybody remember the Atari 2600…or Coleco Vision?) . So after “figuring” it out I just would like to share some of my findings with some of the people having trouble with the game, like me.
This is defiantly no hack and slash, if you think you are going to run headlong in a fight and win…think again.
I say these are beginning tactics when you are weak and do not have very many skills or weapons/Armor
1. Try to concentrate on one bad guy at a time, wait until he is dead….then move to the next one.
2. Never, Never get surrounded. If you find yourself surrounded by no making of your own…run to a corner, let nobody get behind you. Or in the mists of you.
3. Learn to use your tactics.
4. If you have to pull some enemy’s, do it…..I run with Allistar, Wynn, Morrigan and myself (Duel Wield Warrior) Hide the mages behind a Corner, Mages at the back Allistar in front. I open a door where a Mob of Skeletons are. Turn and run where your Ambush is hiding, a manageable few will follow. Run around the Corner and get ready……I like to Imagine the faces on those skeletons when Allistar bashes them in the face with his shield and they are getting a face full of magic. They never know what hit them. Rinse and repeat.
5. Identify what magic/skills you want in the beginning. Read the forums…..identify what magic/skills are the best and work towards that goal, it will be hard in the beginning, but in the end you will be a superpower. My duel wield warrior sucked in the beginning, but I worked to duel wield mastery (equip 2 one handed swords, forget about the knife) Momentum, Duel striking and Berserk. Now he is a cyclone of death, I planned from the beginning and didn’t waist points where I didn’t need them, some goes for mages.
Some more Advanced Tactics, When you start to get the Good spells, Equipment and Skills
1. All this was going great until I started doing the Tombstone missions in the forest outside of the Dalish camp, you disturb the Tombstone and get ready for a fight. A mob of skeletons and something called a Reverent pops out, now the Reverent is an undead armored Warrior who will freak you out. Imagine a beefed up Allistar. So I would try to concentrate on the skeletons first and save the Reverent for last, the only problem is that he would force pull a player to him and kill him, once he gets into the mix of the fight everything goes downhill. So I would try to kill him first, then the skeletons would get me. Try to pull….but they all follow and they run fast. Enter Force Field, I poped one on him as soon as they appeared….problem solved, mopped up the Skeletons and waited for him, he’s not so tough without his army.
2. Micromanage, eventually the Tactics will not be enough, manage every move, every spell.
3. Cone Of Cold, Force Field, Crushing Prison, Group heal, Stone Fist, Fireball…..Nuff said
I now moved up to hard and having a Great time. I don’t have to Pull so much anymore, I think the Micromanaging has a lot to do with that. Also careful planning of my skills from the beginning made me a monster towards the middle/end. Its so satisfying to take a rather large group head on now without pulling my hair out.
What I’ve Learned, Kinda Long (Very Minor Spoilers)
