 What were they doing there when the quanari attacked?
maybe a small hint for DA:3?

My guess is they were looking for the hero of ferelden because something big is comming up. At the ending of the game they say what happend to the champion also happend to the hero, they both disappeared. A big reunion in DA:3? You tell me.

You find your sibling in the deep roads with Nathaniel later if you get the Nathaniel quest, so I'd say there's a good chance they were looking for the red lyrium. For whatever reason it's so important to everyone.
