I thouroughly enjoyed having a voice accompany my Hawke whilst playing DA:2. I had no predespositions towards the implementation of the Mass Effect dialog wheel since I have not played any of the Mass Effect titles.

I would prefer to have my PC join in on conversations instead of standing there like a mute while I scroll through numerous replies. I like not knowing exactly how Hawke will respond and I loved watching the story unfold.

Although I love PC voice overs, I was wondering whether in future games it would be possible to cater for both those who are for and against them?

I really don't know the first thing about the amount of scripting/coding that would be recquired but could there ever be an option to "switch" the voice over off and remove the PC's speaking cut scenes for those who do not wish to have their PC voiced during their playthrough?
That way those who can't stand the voice overs could simply default to the Origin style, leaving those who love it to keep on playing with a fully voiced PC.

I personally dream of being able to load a DLC that would impliment a female/male voice for my Warden in Origins. Of course you would still have all the NPC's experiencing mass mental blocks when it comes to saying the Warden's name. Plus I think this would be impossible since the game has so many dialog options. :s

The option for a voiced Warden cameo in DA:3 would be cool though. :)

I liked having my character voiced in DA2, my only complaint was not knowing better how I would respond. Sooo many times I was like, I did not mean to say THAT and then I'd have to reload a save.

I don't understand people who enjoyed reading paragraphs of text in DAO before deciding which was closer to what they wanted to say. Voice acted PC is great.

I enjoyed the voice acting too, and i can't see any problems about a Wardens cameo in a later game, thay could just cal him/her "Warden" or the last name, Merrill uses "Mahariel" several times during the game, i can't see the issue with doin that in a dlc.

However, the wardens Cameo would have to be vary minor as i see it, there are posibilities that the Warden is dead, but i guess they could just replace the cameo with another warden like Alistair/Strout..

I think the paraphrased options are so short because they change depending on your personality.

I, personally, really like that. I like not knowing what I'd say otherwise. And I've yet to have a problem saying something that I didn't mean to. It's always been, like, "yeah, that's about right".

I think the voice work for the Characters was a huge leap over Mass Effect. Far more life and choice in the character. Jo Wyatt was amazing as the Sarcastic Hawke. I can't get enough of her cracking jokes.

It's better reading one line of text than having your character quote lines out of Twilight. Seriously, the dialog wheel shuld have been better than it was and the actors were let down by the writing.

This is why I dislike going back to DAO now...

Shows what "No Child Left Behind" did for this country. XD

The game took me waaay longer than it otherwise would have, because something would look nice to say, but when I click on it: boom! My character comes out with a sarcastic snot comment, or mean comment, or too nice when I wanted to be harsh. I spent a great deal of time reloading. I like the voice, but I also like knowing what I will say before I drop a dialogue bomb that wrecks my game. It would be nice if they could come up with a happy medium, somehow.

The Male Hawke is still a terrible voiceover. Meanwhile, I find LadyHawke's voice fantastic.

Or you could make the ultimate sacrifice and look at the indicaters.

No.  I'm resigned to PC VO, but I would hate it with a passion if some actor is assigned to my Wardens.  I'd rather never see the Warden again.

I loved the voiced PC as well. The paraphrasing could definitely use some work to get it more accurate, but Hawke felt so much more like a part of the story with his/her own voice.

I don't find the indicators accurate. I have gotten way more douche comments on purple than on red. Sometimes, the blue choice comes out with something I find cruel. I guess it's probably all going to boil down to individual interpretation. I find the wall of text more reliable because there is no guess work involved.

I do love the VA for F!Hawke though. Give a little to get a little. I'll just continue to reload as my situational fix.

I agree, the indicators often do not give a good idea of what you're going to say!  One example, when talking to the grand cleric to distract her there's an option to say "So you support the templars?" and in my mind, it's an accusation, so I click it, and Hawke says something about the templars being necessary!  Noooo, the only one more anti-templar than my mage is Anders...

BTW, I really liked the VA for M!Hawke!

When I learned he was also the VA for Xenon the Antiquarian, I developed a serious crush.

I thought both VAs were pretty good, although I've been exclusively playing femHawke - heh. I think the option suggested elsewhere of allowing people to hover over the choices and read the full text seems optimal (think Gaider even said he thought that might be a good idea in another thread). Those of us who like voiced characters will be satisfied, and those who want full text would get what they want (if it can be pulled off). I'm a voracious reader, so I'm not averse to reading large amounts of text. However, in current games, I vastly prefer having a voiced protagonist for the more immediate and visceral emotional connection that it gives me.

This. I found all too often the options were too far removed from what your character says. Seriously, it's not that hard to a line of text.

Just jumping in to be contrarian here. I'm surprised so many liked the voiced PC. While there were times I liked having Hawke talk back, because the quality of the acting was very good, most of the time I found it seriously immersion-breaking. For three reasons:

1) There are generally only 3 different "characterisations (not counting ? type extras) - restricts the Roleplaying aspect enormously. Silent PC from DAO could have lots of dialogue trees, allowing for far greater character scope, interesting convesations and depth.

2) Unpredictable outcomes - you never quite know what the character will say, and that takes the RP out of RPG spectacularly.

3) Doesn't feel like MY character thanks to the above 2 things - and I'm sorry, I can't see a way around this. It's like watching a movie when the dialogue options are so restricted and, frankly, unnuanced.

It might work with at least 6 different "characterisations" and a far closer matching of dialogue with 'short prompt'. That's the only way I think it could work without being problematic.

NB: Never played Mass Effect so I have no basis of comparison to that game.

I like the voiced main character and furthermore I think now BioWare has gone that route they have to do it from here on out. I'd wager that a good many people who at first didn't like the voiced main character would find that something was missing in future games. I've like the male and femal voice overs for DA2 and both mass effect games.

As an aside, I think people that like BioWare games like DAO and DA2 should give the mass effect games a try as well.  The strength of those games are the same as other BioWare games, interesting characters and a decent story.

I do agree that there's no turning back. It's how Bioware games are to be from now on - which is fine, so long as it's done right. I just think it needs developing massively before it really works in this genre, though.

And for true old school RPG immersion, Bethesda will just have to carry the beacon. ;)

I don't know how feasible this would be, but I would personally like to be able to pick my character's voice. in DAO, I know all they did was grunt and yell battle cries, but we got to pick which "type" of voice we wanted. Whether we wanted to sound soft-spoken or rough, etc. I get this would take a lot of time, but it'd be neat to have multiple voice actors voice the Warden/Hawke/Whoever lines and then you get to pick which one suits the character you have in mind.

Well, a lot of people who enjoyed the paragraphs of text are used to that.  They used to read things made out of leather and paper called books..which had thousands of paragraphs.  Back in the old days, schools would make us learn things from 'books'.  So much better to have less information and a few spoken words...not.
