I love Meril as a character, though I think her Welch accent is a bit much. To contrast my former M!Mage!Hawke/Isabela playthrough I kinda wanna romance her this time around with my rogue.
Thing is, I've heard that her Rival romance is even more awesome than the Friendship one, and I'm torn between the two.
Either my hardass Hawke is gonna be hardass, with Merril meing his 'soft spot', or... how can I be mean to Merril??! She's so cute...
Has anyone found a way to justify something like that, and give me a tip?

well.. u don't really have to be mean to merril to get her Rival up per se.. Just bash blood magic and don't make deals with demons while she's in your party.. usually nets you some rival points then giving her the Halla Carving thingy netted me +15 more.. I kinda enjoyed her Rivalry but yeah I could never be mean to her tho

The Rival Romance is just about not helping her and disliking her use of blood magic and working on the mirror. She dislikes things like treating her like a child. Not trusting her decisions. Not being willing to listen to a demons offer before killing them. Destroying the Evil Tomes.

Past that she generally likes things like helping mages. Besides the really bad blood mages. She is cool with killing them to.

Oh, you don't have to be man to her ! Another way is to fall into rivalmance the way I did : unexpectedly ! I too couldn't be mean to Merrill in a million years so I would mostly if not only get approval. Then comes the quest in which you have to help her get a component for the Eluvian or something ; after I saw that Pol chose being killed by the Varterral over facing Merrill, my genuine RP decision was that she was possibly dangerous for her own people to be so afraid of her and even if she could control the demon, she was losing everyone she loved to her obsession (and after what happens if you bring her in the Fade, my Hawke had to say something). So I just refused to give her the artefact and got a + 105 rivalry out of the blue ! Then you visit her in her home and have an argument in which she's the one being really mean, you can kiss her ass, you'll get rivalry anyway ! Then she comes to your home to apologize and the rivalmance begins. So basically, it takes ONE plot decision to be her rival even if you were on your way to full friendship. Which is why I like her rivalmance : you don't have to metagame by disagreeing with her when you don't feel like it, it just takes one decision (to protect her actually).

The key to remember is just that a bit of the time when talking to her personally, blue can mean supporting her. So you can get Friendship when you don't mean to.

On her Wikia it has a list of all the quests and stuff that give her rivalry

It's actually not that hard to go rivalmance with Merrill without being mean. I was actually quite nice to her the whole time. The critical part is when you have the choice to give her the Arulin'Holm mirror fixing tool. Refusing to let her have it will take your current friend score, reverse it to the equivalent rival score and add +15. First time I did it I got around 120 rival points. After that just pick "I'm trying to protect you" dialogue options to ramp up the rival points. By the time I got the love scene, I had her at max rival.
So basically what is happening is your character still cares for Merill, but is trying to protect her from herself. Merill resents this, but after A New Path, comes to realize that you were right.
I actually found this to be more satisfying than the friend romance in the sense that I feel I'm actually helping this character grow into a better person.

Indeed. It's great for those of us who want to play kind, good, mage-sympathetic types but still want to explore her rivalry path.

That's the case? Didn't knew that. That's probably the way I'll have to take. Somehow Merrill always likes my decisions or I just can't be mean to her Posted Image

In the evil tome quest, bring Merill with you, and every time you destroy a tome you'll get 10 rivalry.

According to the wiki, not giving Merrill the mirror tool automatically flips any level of friendship into the equivalent level of rivalry, then drops an addition 15 points on top of it (which is why different people get different numbers for that decision). So if you want a Rivalry romance with Merrill, that's basically the only thing you have to do.

That's pretty awesome... now I have just to wait for the patch in the next few days and then I can play a fully functional Merrill Rivalmance. Nice.

Though its a neat way to do a rivalmance without being mean, it makes things kind of wonky later on, since the game assumes a decision based on friend/rival status. By the time act three rolls around, if your friends, Merril acts like you gave her the tool even if you didn't, and if your rivals with her she acts like you didn't give her the tool even if you did.

I don't give her the Tool. I like how angry she gets standing up for herself. Even calling me a Shemlen. Though it hurt just a little bit the first time.

I gave her the tool in both play throughs I've done so far, I just can't say no to that pointy-eared bundle of cuteness.Posted Image

I just say no until she shows up my house and starts to apologize for how she acted. Then she has that kind of odd talk about how I can't save her and she'll destroy everything close to me or something. To be honest that is just the only part of the entire romance that feels odd.

You don't need to be mean. You can just honestly tell her you think what she's trying to do is stupid and try to discourage her from it. That's all it takes.

Foreshadowing for how she thinks this whole mirror quest of hers is going to end up, I thought. Note how in Act III on the path up the mountain she's basically saying her goodbyes to everybody. Then Marethari comes in and throws a wrench in that.

I actually loved the Rivalry dialogue at the mansion, though. Very heartfelt and whatnot.

I actually think overall it's great. Even when she is angry at you. Part of me is proud that she is standing up for herself.
