Why does Bioware cater to the fools who get into a trilogy with the last game?

It's ridiculous. Mass Effect is a story based series. Why does Bioware care about the people who don't play the entire series?

The real question here, actually, is "Why do you care?"

It'll be a terrible starting point either way. ME2 is highly referential to the first game, I would have been scratching my head if I didn't play the original.

That's what Wikipedia is for, my friend. And YouTube.

It's not as if long-time fans don't benefit from things like the "Genesis" comic, mind. I personally don't very much like playing ME1 over again every time I want to make a new character. Letting me start from the beginning of ME2 or ME3 without missing out on the opportunity to make the "big" choices is kind of a nice concession to the people who may not particularly enjoy a given entry in the series. Conversely, if you happen to find ME2 too pew-pew shooty-shooty streamlined for your liking compared to ME3, having such an option in the sequel allows you to just skip over it entirely.
