None of the violent voices sound violent, if you ask me.
Agreed. My roommate and I had a conversation about this when I first got the CC. I'd almost call one or two of the Violent voice sets the gentlest sounding ones, even. Makes me wonder if they named them "violent' as a joke...

'GREETINGS!' — My ears, they bleed.
Anyway, with regards to the 'Violent' voice sets, I think many are only disoriented by them because they're equating violence with gruffness and stupidity. Several of them seem to me that they're intended to sound more testy or short-fused than simply barbaric.

I know I'm generally not a fan of the wise and mystical options.

They don't have to sound gruff or stupid to be violent, yes - but they don't even sound testy or short-fused to me.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned that the sound sets voiced by Kath Soucie are labeled "sultry." For those who don't know, Kath Soucie often voices young children, and was the VO behind Aerie in BG2. The last voice on earth I'd call "sultry."
Hey, someone else who pays attention to the voice actors in these things....
Also, in regards to the current discussion, I'm thinkin' that they just recorded a bunch of voices, and then went back and named them, rather than specifically basing the voice work around those specific themes, which might explain the disparity between the sound of the voice and their names.
Additionally, like a couple people have mentioned above, it's possible you were expecting the voices to follow the theme a little too literally; like violent sounding more testy than outright berserk, as one might expect with a name like that.

I really, really, REALLY wish they could have used David Hayter for one of the voices so my Naked Snake would actually sound like him too. THAT would be cool. So would a Dwarf that sounds like Ahnold XD
They got Steve Blum to play Ohgren. Too bad he didn't also do one of the main character voice sets, too....
