Results of NVIDIA 3D Settings Testing

Below are results I obtained from fiddling with toggles under "Manage 3D Options" in the NVIDIA settings.  Testing was performed with a GTX 580s in SLI, so please adjust up or down based on your hardware. Note that I will not cover every setting, only those in which I saw an improvement or problem.  Please note I am using the latest beta Forceware drivers as of 10-Apr-2011, 270.51.

Settings with Positive Impact:

Anisotropic Filtering Setting: 16x
Anisotropic Filtering Comment:  I tried all settings and noticed no performance impact.  Note that I did not see much of an improvement in image quality either, but YMMV.

Antialiasing - Gamma Correct Setting:  On
Antialiasing - Gamma Correct Comment:  Large increase in image quality of indoor cutscenes.  This seems to soften bright regions that were washed out by intense light reflections.  Also makes the characters illuminated by fire during cutscenes appear more natural.

Antialiasing - Mode:  Enhance the application setting
Antialiasing - Setting: 4x
Antialiasing Comment:  Tried everything from 4-64, but from 8x onwards I saw significant slowdown in wounded coast, sundermount, and the bone pit. 8xQ is a reasonable compromise and looks amazing, but the FPS drops to 20 in large outdoor zones.  4x is a good compromise and dramatically improves the appearance of the game.

Antialiasing - Transparency:  4x (Supersample)
Antialiasing - Transparency Comment:  This is the single largest improvement factor I found.  Even at 2x you will notice that cutscenes are smoother, 90% of jagged edges disappear, and the spell effects seem more natural in the environment.  Even at 2x its a marked improvement.  You can balance this setting with the enhanced AA to get better performance.  One slight drawback is that the Sundermount Graveyard blue-looking haze undergoes a "sheeting" effect when you pan the camera too quickly.  No other glitches introduced when using this option. (I'm did most testing in Chap 2/3)

Settings with Negative Impact:

Texture Filtering - Trilinear Optimization:  This causes the load screens to flicker and sometimes crash.  It also seems to induce a period drop to windowed mode when switching in and out of the character screen.
Texture Filtering - Quality:  Same as above, except seems to happen more often with "High Quality" mode enabled.  When tested with Trilinear Optimization enabled, loading into an outdoor zone caused all sorts of weird elongated triangles to flash in and out of the frame with each movement.
Vertical Sync:  Use the 3D application setting on this one.  If you force it on from the NVIDIA drivers there seems to be a huge negative performance impact.

Video Card Impact:

Bumping up the settings significantly increased the workload on my cards, driving the operating temperature from the 60dC regime up to a plateau at about 75dC. If you use speedfan or any other monitoring software you might want to keep an eye on your temps, espcially when you enable Antialiasing Transparency mode.

Final Thought

Dragon Age 2 is a beautiful game!  I love the visual, voice acting, character development, and story.  When you tweak up the graphics a bit, the cutscenes become very movie-like and demonstrate a big leap in quality from DA1.  The HQ texture pack is a welcome additional as well.  Thanks for yet another tremendous release BioWare!
