This is correct. Some enemies have built in melee "weapons", like the shock stick the Assault Troopers use. They're visual elements - Shepard can't use them.

If there's one spoiler I'd like to have prior to ME3 and nothing else, that would be why TIM wants Shep dead. Right now it doesn't make sense to me, unless it has to do with preventing the Reapers from getting their hands on Shep or something, but then why bring him back in the first place. Oh well, it is Mac Walters we're talking about here.

On the other hand, Cerberus might just want to get rid of you, regardless because you know and have seen too much maybe. Very curious about that.

Also, no melee weapons for Shep? Well, that's a shame. My Vanguard will stay with her claymore then. But, we get to keep our skills, armor and weapons? MATTOCK! Yes, sweet. And of course charge, shockwave, reave and slam. Okay, that makes up for the lack of melee weapons....I guess.
