As much as I hate leaving them unlocked and not getting the XP (the main loss) my standard group is 2 mages and 2 warriors because the locks mean not much and it is a killer to get enough points into the stats to open a lot of stuff anyways.

Qunari swords. Plus, you need a rogue to unlock the door to the Vicount's throne room when meeting sister Nightingale.

I wonder if anyone has put together a list of the locations you can only visit once, such as the Slaver Holding Caves.

With respect to all other locations if you find a locked chest, you can always return later with a rogue to open it.

BTW, to the poster that mentioned not investing in Varric's dex over cunning...you lose a lot of damage early game as Varric lacks auto crit abilities. I know, I always take Varric to 30 cun by end of act 1 and to 40 during act 2 if Hawke is not a rogue. His damage output (or lack thereof relative to if I had taken dex to 30) is very apparent vs the Rock Wraith which is really the only time I miss the extra damage. Isabella or Rogue Hawke on the other hand do get auto crit abilities so heavy cun investment is okay.

That was me, and I agree with you.  The Rock Wraith fight is a great example of where the extra damage from higher dex would make a meaningful difference in the length of the fight.  If I were making a Varric build for this fight only, it would be much different.  The longer term investment in Cunning pays off in the long run, though, and I can see we're on the same page about how and when we stat him out for Cunning.  I'm thinking about only taking him to 33 or 34 in my current (new-ish) playthrough since he gets the +6/7 stat rune in Act III.  I don't know if he needs to unlock/disarm Master-class devices prior to that rune being available.  Maybe just a Maker's Sigh when he gets it.   Hmm, food for thought, anyway.

I'm playing with a Varric with a significantly higher Cunning than Dex.

a few +%crit chance items and passive abilities have turned him into a beast.

yes but doesn't Sebastian, a rogue, have to be in your party for that quest anyway?

I dunno about that quest (doing my first playthrough with the exiled prince now) but i hated the act 2 quest with him. To keep my party balance i replaced varric and cried as i passed 3 complex chests with sebastian having all this mighty dex and no cunning. That and the whole preachy thing he has going and other than the ridiculously awesome loot (locket and flint cuirass in act 1, fades fury and allures crook in act 2) you get from his quests i would never use him in a regular party
