I've heard that after retrieving the reaper IFF, shepard will only have time to complete 1 more mission before the normandy is boarded by collectors.  However, the dlc content is technically considered to be "assignents" not "missions" so if i get the reaper IFF, will I have time to do overlord in addition to legion's loyalty mission before getting boarded?

I'm fairly certain that anytime your feet hit the ground outside of the Normandy it counts. I'm pretty sure that at one point I stopped off at Omega to buy a last minute upgrade and because of it I lost most of my crew. Hopefully another will post with a definite answer for you, after that one time I stopped risking it and saved the IFF mission after I'd done everything else.

Not just feet on the ground, mining counts as a "mission stop" as well, as I found out when I mined a couple of planets, lost the crew, then natrually, immediately went back and loaded an earlier save, like the horrible meta-gamer I am... :-P

Uh, no mining doesn't count.  Nor does going shopping.  Or dialogue-only assignments (like the Presidium fish thing, for example). The only things that count are the assignments or missions that give you the summary screen at the end. 

If you had people die after only doing some mining or shopping, it was a glitch.
