So i got a new computer. Here are the specs:

Dell
XPS L502X
Intel® Core ™ i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30GHz 2.30GHz
RAM: 4 GB
64 bit OS

i installed steam, then ME1, and whenever i go to play it, starts up but  immediately stops. No warning message, no nothing. My CPU ussage spikes a little bit only momentarily, and then it returns to normal. i look in processes, and it shows MassEffect.exe for a brief second (literally), and then it disappears. i can't figure out what is the matter. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You just need to install the 1.02 patch for Mass Effect which solves a problem with the game running on windows 7.

If you have downloaded the patch (I'm sure Steam downloads it automatically) and it still doesn't work the problem most likely lies in an incompatable video card.

Yes try loading the 1.02 patch. Had same issues with Win7 64 bit. Would start and just stop with no warning. I do run the Steam version and found manually installing patch made it work again.

Steam should be giving you 1.02 automatically, that is what was installed for me just recently and it works fine on my win 7 64-bit machine.

I also received my copy from Steam and am running in on Windows 7 (Ultimate) 64 bit. I so far am not having any issues (except making sheppard move faster - I'm sure I'm not hitting the right key... again). Maybe your copy didn't install correctly.

I'm trying to install the DLC too on a new rig with win 7, the installer auto cancel the installation after input of code. I tried to run as admin, I tried ompatibility. Nothing works. Patch 1.02 is installed.

But if the results of BDtS is not important to the overall story, I don't see the point of trying to put it in.

Running Windows7-64 bit.  (DA2, ME2 run fine).  Core 2 Duo and ATI Radeon HD 4650.

There is no official 1.03 patch for Mass Effect. The majority of google references I see to 1.03 are for pirate, cracked versions of Mass Effect. That could well be your problem.

Trying to install the v1.02 patch didn't fix my issue. I did this to get mine to work....(nothing is pirated in mine. it is store bought DVD install. and with the 2 DLCs)

Eh?

My version, sealed new in a box (EA classics, discounted series) with a new CD key says it is 1.03.

Bought it from Amazon last week...

Is Amazon selling pirated versions?

Mind you I had to install the 1.02 patch to get the game to even run under windows 7.  Apparently whatever was buggy in 1.0 and 1.01 was broken again in 1.03.

The only thing 1.03 will be the uninstall masseffect.exe which is the uninstaller. The game masseffect.exe is 1.02 and so is the configuration program. launcher will be 1.01

The 1.02 patch is needed for running the game under windows 7 since the game was made before windows 7 came out they needed to patch it so it will run under that operating system i think Vista shares the same issue with running the game unpatched.

I also have a problem running the game in Windows 7 (Ultimate, 64-bit). I have installed the 1.02 patch and also the latest Direct-X from Microsoft. I can configure the game settings from the launcher, but that's it. Choosing 'Play' only makes the CPU work a bit and then nothing happens. It won't even start! I'm really disappointed. I was looking forward to playing this game series, and then I can't even get to "first base"... Isn't there a solution? It's not that old a game...

Hm... Venturing into the directory structure, more specifically the 'Binaries' directory, and setting the 'MassEffect.exe'-file to run in 'Windows XP (Service Pack 3)' compatibility mode, finally helped me run the game. Additionally, I made a shortcut to the 'MassEffect.exe'-file and ran that instead of the game's own launcher program. I haven't played the game much yet, but it seems to run without any problems...

I am not absolutely sure why, but I was able to get ME1 to play by simply selecting "run as administrator" on Win 7 ultimate x64. So I am not absolutely sure that the compatability mode for XP SP3 is even required.
