Yes. Nathaniel is serious without being too broody. He is gracious when accepting gifts, but not an asskisser. He is a gentleman without being too sappy. He is funny without being a goof. Even with what little I know of him, he is my "ideal" in the DA universe.

Why is he not more popular?

I have to admit, in a way, I'm happy he is not more popular.  

Honestly, though, I think it has to do with him being from Awakening, not being a LI, AND being Rendon Howe's son.  Some people never took the opportunity to get to know Nate because they wanted to take revenge for what dear old daddy did to their Couslands.

I am glad to see all the love for older men in here. Sure, young guys can be fun, but sometimes it's nice to have a man around that has some experience...under his belt.

*fistbump* Amen. Nathaniel was my favorite companion in DAA as well - and I thought he looked (and sounded) great in DA2.

ETA: Yes, my canon warden is a Cousland and spared Nathaniel. (Hey, she spared Zev, and he far more directly tried to kill her, right?  )

My girls all took one look and thought  "Hello there big boy.  Howe you doin?"  Probably helps that I don't play Couslands and also don't RP very well....  Those elves (and one DC)  took a very tolerant view of his culpability for Rendon's crimes.  Plus, hey, free archer!

I only played one Cousland character, and it wasn't my favorite. Believe it or not, I loved the Dalish Elf origin the best. It was so sad, and really set the tone of the game for me. I felt like it really gave me a lot of room for RP-ing, since I didn't know much about them. I never played her as hostile, so my DE was fine with Nate. Of course, Nate might have been okay with hostile- he liked Velanna well enough. Grrr...

He should have teased the Warden-Commander! She would have liked being called a "pretty brush".

Nate is a big tease - he stands there all broody and stoic, thinking "muahaha I'll just be interesting enough to keep her attention but only flirt with, um, annoy, Velanna. That'll work."

I think he may have failed to consider that he'd be in for 10 years of celebacy with that plan. Serves him right!

The idea that Nathaniel visited Jethann when in Kirkwall during act iii.   Commander Jethann + Nathaniel = Such a wonderful mental image...

Without considering further ramifications - the thought of Nate's reaction to Jethann...priceless.

Anyway - if Nate's in Kirkwall and looking for company Hawke's cellar door is always open....

(Love Jethann btw - every time I chat to him I'm thinking "You tell Gavorn we no kill anyone today!"  Mark Meer is a GOD! Hmm might be time for an ME2 playthrough...)

I just completed "Finding Nathaniel" for my umpteenth playthrough. This time, my Hawke is rivaling all companions but Varric, and by that point in the act, had pretty much had it with everyone. More than ever, I really wanted to ditch the entire party and run off with Nathaniel.

Although his cameo is too short, there is so much potential fodder there for an expanded future appearance. I really hope we have not seen the last of him.

Oh Nate is my #1, but I just see Fenris having the advantage atm due to him being 'newer' and the whole 'LI' badge poor Nate just doesn't have.

Oh! I started a new Awakenings playthrough with an Orlesian warden - apart from feeling like I was fighting in molasses - it was nice to hear Nate's dulcet tones again.
