Confusion is not ff safe. Fatiguing Fog is designed to hit allies, why you mention it is bizarre.AgenTBC wrote...

Graverobber + One Foot in is FF safe.

So the Fog is the only "safe" way, at the moment, that Varric can cause Diaorient? That sucks.SuicidialBaby wrote...

I use Confuse on groups including my party members all the time and it only seems to affect the Mabari, but this seems to be more of a glitch. So far it seems to be FF safe on Nightmare.
He turns red, indicating he is becoming an enemy, but I haven't seen him actually attack any party member.

Pinning shot can Disorient every 15 seconds as well.

Apparently Varric's Pinning shot is bugged plus it isn't 100% either (yes, Chaos isn't 100% too).SuicidialBaby wrote...
50% chance... I confuse Avaline about half the time I allow Varric to use it through tactics. The dog will only attack your party if you inflict damage to it or if no other targets exist in range closer than your party, in this instance simply unsummon.

You can see the Disorient icon flash for a millisecond and that's it. Disorient CCCs don't work on these targets. (At least on PC version.)
Only ways to set up Disorient CCCs I've found are as follows:
(1) upgraded Confuse - this is FF safe (except for the Mabari)
(2) upgraded Fatiguing Fog - not sure if this one is FF safe because I usually use it on mobs that are far away at start of battle
(3) any talent that Obscures a rogue Hawke with Disorienting Criticals passive ability. (when he/she makes a crit, the target becomes Disoriented)

Well, it has effects that would be bad if applied to allies as well, so it's helpful to know whether those effects (the 50% movement/attack speed decrease and disorienting) are subject to FF on Nightmare mode.

Bursting Arrow doesn't require your party to be in the area of effect to recieve the obscure and anyone using their brain would understand a damaging ability with FF is a bad thing.Filament wrote...

And excuse me for trusting the wiki and the talent description, there's no duration listed for Smoking Arrow and the wiki says allies "must be in the blast radius" so to say that was an "asanine" leap is not really fair.

When you use the fully upgraded fatiguing fog talent on a group of enemies, it makes your allies become obscured (so their appearance changes, but no negative effects on allies).
I don't know what happens if you cast it on an area of effect where your allies are included in the group of enemies.
