I think that the Mass Effect Universe is perfect for an MMO but I really don't want it to be a WOW or TOR clone.

It could be brilliant and I could be in love with it. BUT, not if it's another mediocre, tried, tested, true and TIRED mmo and really hope a Mass Effect MMO would dare to be more action oriented and forward thinking in core design concepts.

I would completely avoid this mmorpg if it were TOR with an ME coat of paint.

I couldn't agree more on this note. I am thoroughly fed up of the cookie cutter MMOs.

TOR was surprisingly fun for a while, but the overriding message of that game was that no risks were taken in the making of that product. Nothing new was tried.

However, I am very confident that Guild Wars 2 is going to change the playing field. It has thrown out most of the conventions, done away with the subscription model etc.

With a million people signed up for the beta alone, I think we're going to see a lot more demand for high quality, free to play, original MMO's.

My hope is that Arena Net sets an example for other developers, that the way to be  a success on par with WoW is not through making WoW 2.0, but rather through making the next great, original thing.

Noooooooooooooooooo, I dont think Mass Effect should be an MMO. I think they should try explore other ways of making it online like they doing it with multiplayer aspect, but not a MMO.

No just no, just because they made money from starwars doesn't mean it will repeat. starwars been around for 40 years now? thats a long time to pick up fans, Mass effect is nowhere near as popular as starwars, plus ME it's biggest profit comes from the xbox and ps3, co-op missions should be the next step.

While I love the Mass Effect universe I think they should just let it be finished. Too much of a good thing is bad, let it just be a great trilogy. I've seen kotor and didn't care for it much and the relationships you make with your squad mates during all 3 games are really what makes the trilogy amazing. Going MMORPG you won't be able to get as emotionally involved like you did with the trilogy.

Just my opinion.

Hi guys,

If youll have me id like to give you my idea on an ME MMO.
The aim of a ME MMO should not be to build on the story of the ME series. The trilogy is excelent, the storyline and ability to build relationships with the squad is what made the game excell. The trilogy is complete and commander shepard goes down in history as a hero and a the goddamn most amazing leadcharacter of a videogame series i have ever known!

But have you read the books? The comics? There is an entire universe out there. Literally and figuratively! Commander Sheppard was just one character. And an MME would allow fans to discover the entire Universe, on their own. Creating their own story. For those of you who are familier with EVE online, you might understand. If bioware were to create an ME universe in which a player is free to decide what race and role to play.... The possibilities would be endless. Fans could choose to become a batarian slaver and try to take over omega, or to be an alliance marine to grow through the ranks to be admiral, or maybe a volus to broker deals between the Turians to become the wealthiest character in-game !!

From what Ive read, there are several challenges to overcome in order to create a succesfull MMO:
1. Not to copy WoW.
2. The possibility space
3. The time-cost-commitment issue
4. Im sure there's more but let's talk about these for just a minute...

WoW has a big issue with the lvl-ing style. After players have spent days worth of playtime to reach a high level, the playspaces have become so overcrowded that it poses too much stresses on the servers. Lower lvl areas become deserterd and virtually useless and the game eventually becomes boring and dull when the player reaches the highest level.

The possibility space for an ME MMO is huge. There is so much content in the ME universe, and every fans will want to experience exactly what he/she is expecting. Creating an ME MMO would be an astronomical task for the bioware team.

Bioware has commited to SW:TOR and theyll be sure to see that one through to when it's become profitable. Wikipedia sources say it's the most expensive video game ever to be produced. So I fear we will have to wait a while before bioware will devote thought and resources to an ME MMO.

Having said all of this and coming back to the point of creating a succesfull MMO:
I've been giving thought to what would make mass effect stand out from WoW. The first and foremost thing i could think of would be to abolish 'lvling'. A character may grow and grow to reach the highest point. But all what goes up, must come down. If there were a time limit, this would allow players to be ambitions and aim for the stars, only to be petrified when time runs out. Setting a high score for other players, and yourselves, to beat next time. Be this time limit in a server wide 'cycle'. Or a more individual life-span. Rather than carrying ourselves through the endless lvl-ing, only to get bored once we've reached it, the players could be given a certain time limit, to 'live' and acomplish tasks. With a whole universe to discover, countless paths to take (piracy, military, trade, politics) and personal goals (such as wealth, power, political influence, scientific discovery), and a personal way to go about it (quick pace freelance mercenary style action, loyal story line military carreer, brokering deals locally, planetary and eventually on a galactic scale as a councillor, ...) I could write a book but Im going to have to stop myself.

Thanks for reading all. I keep my fingers crossed that bioware devellops the ME MMO. I pray it is remotely similar to what Ive tried to describe to you today. There's so much potential here, and every fan sees it slightly differently. Hope you enjoyed my view of it!

Agreed. If I can't play in the same room as real people, or at most on a LAN so we can all pause and have a beer together, then I'm not interested.

I think Mass effect has too much potential with it's largely undiscoverd universe and massive fanbase. Many fans have read the books and know there is much more to mass effect than commander sheppard and shooting geth.

The multiplayer option in ME3 was a nice addition to build up galactic readyness and provide a break from the storyline. It was fun to play with different species and classes and to experience the difference between a vanguard and an engineer without having to play the single player all over again.

But if you don't want ME to become an MMO. Don't be discouraging from bioware from develloping one, simply don't buy it! If you're having your hopes up for an ME4 instead of the MMO then I understand why you wouldnt want to see bioware pour resources and time into the MMO; but ME is a finished trilogy. And I'm praying fans won't want to see ME be transformed into a multiplayer mindless first person shooter. That's what Call of Duty and Battlefield are for.

Mass effect has too much potential to be downgraded to a multiplayer shooter, and I agree the trilogy should be left at where it is with hopefully some DLC to give some more closure. Is sheppard dead? Why did the Normandy leave without him? What happens to the romanced character?

Any thoughts?

I'd love a ME mmo, but BW would have to take a long, looong, hard look at what worked and didn't work with TOR. MEO must be "next gen", meaning designed for next gen consoles and PC, using "super server" design since the old way with "servers" is way outdated, and it must have sandbox inspired end-game since the choreographed high quality voiced content will run out FAST.  I would love some asteroid home for my guild where we can battle the pirates (PvP and PvE) for space resources, and yes that includes space ship fighting even tough it's not big part of ME1/2/3

ME3 online was fun and proves it can work IMO, just need a larger scale and make it persistent. I'd like community input from the design phase tough, too man mmos drops the ball completely at that stage. Of course it needs to be Mature, over the shoulder shooter and for GODS SAKE not hotbar WoW scheme garbage.

What BW needs is basically PlanetSide 2 with ME lore and art, but more emphasis on voiced quality content for the "leveling up" part of the game. One great advantage to the lore is space is humongous, cheap to make and add compared to land area. Can add thousands of planets and MAKE THEM ROUND, I HATE the constant flat planets.

As much as I don't like "Free to play" games, I think it should be an option or something similar to attrackt the largest possible audience, lots of players is essential to make it FEEL like a giant living universe. I also think some "extender game play" should be included, like starting manufactoring from your ipad, giving orders to your companions, doing stuff that does NOT involve walking about shooting stuff, this is because it keeps the players IN the game even when they are not playing it, making it more likely to keep them playing.

Make it subscription based for all the perks where they can grind out some of that with the "free mode", it can be sending companions to gather stuff, owning an asteroid or moon, more choice in outfit and all that jazz when you subscribe, the key here is to lure in the cheapskates with "free mode" and make them subscribe to get all the fun but still non-essential stuff.

Some people seem to freak out over "it's the death of the ME series", so make it a parallel experience, of course connected into the single players games but still a separate experience. It would be fun to run into characters from the games and other such easter eggs.

One problem here is the cost, it will cost about 50-150 million USD and I don't think EA can handle that anytime soon, maybe get into some strategic partnership with Microsoft? They seem willing to dish out billions on getting quality stuff on the Xbox and Windows Phone, can even get early hardware to develop for the next Xbox so BW don't have to wait until it is on the market in a year or two, I suspect EA already got some of that tough, if I had to chose I'd take Xbox exclusive over the PS Sony is in enough trouble already.

Did I mention I'd give you my first born for ME:O?

In my opinion, if they were to make a Mass Effect MMO then it'd have to be non-canon. A big part of the Mass Effect series is the ability to make your own decisions and have the your personal future playing experience affected by that. With all the choices made in the trilogy it'd be pretty impossible to find a starting point, nevermind an end (don't bring up The Ending, I subscribe to the IT) I don't know much creating MMO's but I think any programming team would have difficulty creating an MMO that is different for each player.
Alternatively though, they could set it before the trilogy. I don't know if that's possible. Is there enough space in between discovery of the Mass Relays, the First Contact War and the maiden voyage of the Normandy?

An MMO would be great, if done right. What with all the different species and planets, fighting, trading, politics, etc. The key word in Mass Effect universe is universe. To be able to just jump into it is a dream of many, me included. But the sheer size of it is a bit daunting I would imagine.

If they do, I would buy/download/subscribe. I trust in Bioware to not completely screw up a game, they've done well so far, by my standards.

A Mass Effect MMO would be interesting as long as it's not just SWTOR with a new overcoat.

A little late to the game, but just saw this today. Some very cool concepts there! That's pretty much it, yup!
