So... those posters who argue for this Mass Effect MMO idea simply want to trade the rich single player experience of this franchise for a grind and an ability to shoot their friends or random people... Seriously? *sigh*
These kind of preferences of the customers is actually the reason we are seeing lesser and lesser number of the games with a strong single player with each passing year and more and more of... yeah... the copy-paste unimaginative MMO / multi player based games.
The only somewhat good and new idea (from my viewpoint of course) on this thread is the Pacifien's Homeworld-type RTS idea which may allow changing the perspective and scope of the franchise and actually adding something significant to it without any trade offs.
Thank You for Your time.
Pftt its 2011 not some 1980 where there is nothing to do in a MMO .
Anyway what if ME MMO is like singleplayer , just people have to pay to play instead of buy or pirate .
MMO part in ME universe is COOP FPS elements , or PVP FPS elements .
Releasing DLC simply becomes integrated into montly subscription , and offcourse they can go selling virtual goods like bigger ships , more romantic companions bla bla .
It doesn´t have to be boring grind like 1980 , infact MMO is slowly turning into singleplay or small group MMO .
Once the small group outnumber the big raids of 40 people , in the end MMO is based on principle money or subscription talks .
Less subscriptions less income , means you miss the que and your audience .

What are your ideas/fears/hopes/dreams/ideals for "Mass Effect:MMO" ?
does that mean it will only be available for pc? since thats the only place where MMO works best, doesnt work too good in consoles.

I don't know about single player, but I think this would lend itself
more toward encouraging smaller groups rather than large raids.
Obviously pvp could be done in whatever numbers are appropriate, but
'dungeon' style encounters would be fun to do in groups of 3 in true
ME style.

I probably wouldn't buy an MMO. Why? All the characters in ME act like thier part of that world. It works. Very well. Having the likes of us doing chat dialog or even worse...headsets with real voices... would completely break the spell for me.
I definitely agree with you. The spell can be broken in this way. However, I feel that you're far from alone in this boat. The immersion is important for lots of us.
When I played Age of Conan for instance, I didn't get on vent with people because I liked 'keeping it real' as it were. I played on an rp server and in an rp guild and most people were pretty good about respecting that.
I think in a sci-fi setting this could be accomplished a lot easier considering.. Well let's face it. People feel less awkward and dorky staying more 'in character' in a sci-fi setting than a fantasy setting. You don't have to type words with funny english accents and be all.. 'Aye!' and 'Come lads, lets slay us a dragon!' and all that stuff lol.
Sci-fi settings don't really require different dialogue or inflection than regular present day chatter. This will help in not scaring off as many people from the role play aspect.

I think it's likely you'll hafta hook up a usb keyboard to your console for social stuff, commerce etc, but I don't see a reason why a tps game couldn't be played perfectly well (if not better!) on a console for combat.

I'd prefer another ME RPG series opposed to a ME MMO. Only way I'd play a ME MMO is if it's truly unique compared to all the other MMO's and actually sticks to the dark theme, meaning only 18+ allowed. MMO's are not unique in any way, same skin different storyline these days=very boring. A great RPG provides a good story and rich characters much like books, far better than another dull MMO.
I couldn't agree with this more. I am -totally- for a ME MMO, but my criteria for it's success is the same as yours. I have no interest in another Teen rated mmo with an unrealistic, fantastical world.
Frankly, I don't think the devs are either. Do you really think they would create a world where you couldn't even say the one rule of Omega??

Putting that aside. It looks exactly like every other mmo i've ever seen, but re-skinned with light sabers instead of swords. It looks exceedingly geared toward teenagers.
This is something I can't cope with in an MMO anymore. Were I asked to classify my age group or maturity level, I wouldn't say +13.
There are very few things that I can say would entertain both myself and a 13 year old. I think the same applies for many of us. So why should we accept playing games that cater to teenagers? I've gotten to the point where I can't tolerate mmo's anymore, and yet it's the only genre that I'm truly interested in.
It's time for Bioware to make the real deal.

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea either. If you look at the MMOs on the market that actually survive and sustain the longest, namely WoW, EQ, PSO and FFXIV, they're not just well-made, but extremely well polished too. And polishing a game is never Bioware's strong suit. As brilliant as Bioware's ideas for games are, almost all of its games are riddled with bugs and design oversights. And that is seriously going to hurt MEMMO's playability, as bugs can be exemplified many times in an MMO.

Well to all those who site the large, immature fanbase of MMOs in general as reason why ME shouldn't be an MMO, while I agree with you, I'd need to point out that you are actually encouraging Bioware to make it happen. I'm going to stop you right there sir. Polish is indeed the pre-req for any NEW MMO. However, when those games came out they were ANYTHING but polished. If you think Bioware's games are buggy, you haven't played any of these MMO's at release.
People's memories are short. They forget how buggy WoW was when it came out. How rudimentary it was, how many broken mechanics it included. It is not the same game now that it was 5 years ago.
FFXIV was recognized as the biggest flop for a premium caliber mmo release period. The company issued a public appology to it's customers and gave them free months of playtime because the game was not even acceptible for beta status on release.
Rift, the most recent class A MMO release, was so well recieved by the MMO community because it had a level of polish on release that had never been seen before in the genre. So you're right on this. However, Bioware is a game developer. They do this for a living. They're in it to win it. They saw the numbers when Rift came out. They also saw the numbers when FFXIV came out.
Any child would see this and realise, if they want to sign up to do a new MMO title, they need to stick to the philosophy that has governed the series thus far. They need to work hard and turn out a product that is as near to impecable on release as possible. Or they need to go home.

Allow me to explain;
I love the idea of creating my character from any of the “main” races (Asari, Human, Krogan, Turian, Drell, Quarian, Salarian(maybe Geth?)) then choosing from the available classes fit for those races (i don’t think a soldier Asari would offer much, likewise an adept Krogan).
Races could benefit from attributes dependant on their backgrounds, Salarian = Science, Quarian = Tech, Asari = biotics, with Human being good a good all rounder.
You would then start on each species’ home world (or the Flotilla) and be left to choose your own patch, be it military, mercenary, or ‘trades guild’. None are technically ‘baddies’ , that’s what the Geth and Batarians are for eh?
Military would get free ships and guns, but have to earn them from the authorities by gaining recognition in the military ranks. They will also need to purchase recourses from traders to exchange for those ships and get their strength from weight of numbers. The military will be responsible for keeping the peace in and around their species systems.
Traders would get larger transport ships with minimal armaments but have access to the greater income. They will need to buy and sell the main elements mined in MassEffect2 (Element Zero, Platinum, etc) to get this money. However this would leave them open to attack requiring that they hire ‘protection’. That’s where the Mercenaries come in.
Mercenaries could choose to join one of the three main Mercenary factions (bluesuns, Eclips, BloodPack) and gain benefits from those factions. They are then take jobs from the trade guild traders to provide protection. They can spend the money earned to purchase better ships and weapons. As tensions heighten and the traders go from system to system, tensions might grow between the Mercenary clans and start inter clan wars with the other factions (that the military have to quash).
The game would need “space” and “ground missions” of course, and need to retain the basic ground controls of 3rd person point and shoot.
The Devs could introduce “world events” such as Geth attack on key systems that the whole galaxy would need to club together to repel.
Now, to me, this all sound bloody amazing!
(Come on BioWare, give me a job! That’s got to be worth a job on your staff right? Right? Or a free copy of ME3 at lease. No?)
Where it could go wrong is if they give it the standard MMO control system.
You know what I mean, the crappy “press 1 to initiate auto attack, press 2 to use a talent/spell” This works in DragonAge, but should never EVER be used in a shooty game!
Please don’t get it wrong if you try it.
If they can’t commit to another MMO, then a simple cooperative multiplayer game based on the mass effect universe would be awesome too

In terms of the combat side of the game, a mixture between ground and space based battles would be the way to go. I would like to see some sort of relation between a ships weapons and the amount of players needed on it for full effectiveness. For example, say a frigate has 3 weapons systems, you'd need 4 players on it to be used at its full potential. 3 on the weapons and 1 at the helm. It would encourage players getting together and teaming up while also it could lead to something like boarding parties. Sounds like very wishful thinking but ah well.

And indeed some races would have to remain unplayable for the sake of limitations and so forth.
I don't think Geth would be the 'evil race'. I don't think this game really needs that. Having the 'Evil races' and 'Goodly races' is a surefire path to a cookie cutter, generic MMO.
I personally find it would be more interesting to allow races to gain standing with different factions (factions options being dependent on your race choice) and use this mechanism to determine which 'side' you're on.
So a human could gain standing with the alliance, cerberus, or mercenary groups. Krogans could gain standing with their tribe or merc groups. Etc.

@cedgedc Im all in favour of your "no goodies or badies" rule. I'd love to see a game that lets players choose their own affiliation. So no to the evil Geth thing is fine with me. Let the other players be the bad guys.

Well ME:Galaxy (that's only a working title you understand!) could have player elected council members or something like that?
I can't speak much to how Eve functions because i've never played it. I looked into it, but wasn't interested in a game where I couldn't ever really be my character outside of a ship.
I think it's dangerous territory making players kindof, 'rulers' of the server. However, I could see a system of rankings within factions that could be implemented.
Example:
Given: Factions are the system around which the game functions (not factions like in WoW mind you)
Say you choose to throw in with Cerberus as a human. You might do lots of assignments, or whatever the mechanism is.. for Cerberus and gain a certain rank within that faction. This would give you access to a wider scope of weapons, resources, etc than someone who is of lower rank.
But anyways that's total day-dream speculation. I would hope devs could come up with considerably better ideas than that hehe.

I'm fairly sure they would, considering they more or less already do within ME2. A few krogans have biotics but there aren't any krogan adepts that you come across. You also don't see asari soldiers or quarian biotics.. etc etc.
I think that is definitely a given. Bioware is no stranger to having you make a choice and then having that choice lead you in one particular path - instead of having all paths available to you all the time.
I.E. You pick a race.. you gotta live with what's available to that race!

So, how about Humans can side with Military, Cerberus or Trade Guild(including Merc) (good, shady or independent) none are technically bad, they just have different ideals.
(“one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter” and all that jazz)
Other faction splits would need to be dreamt up for the other races.
I’m not sure what the Asari equivalent would be, Asari Commando for the military arm but no idea for the ‘shady’ choice. They clearly can’t join Cerberus (who I guess would be viewed by and view all others as hostile).
On the flip side I’m not sure what the ‘good’ choice would be for Drell.
Shady would be assassin obviously. Maybe some kind of Cleric or religious role as a sort of missionary or something??
The other races pose similar problems..Krogan for instance. Though i guess they could be Clan member, BloodyPack merc or trade/freelance.
PS..also i see the ME:Galaxy name is already taken. Its an iPhone game based on Miranda & Jacob. See here; http://masseffect.wi...s_Effect_Galaxy
I guess a new "theoretical" working title is required, but let’s please not go for the crappy “MassEffect:Online”

There's definitely room for plenty of factions, and some could easily develop in the wake of ME 3 that we just don't know about yet.
Perhaps Humans being the most versitile race are the only ones that have the additional faction option of cerberus- but it would come with a penalty of making it harder to develop relations with the other factions perhaps, since they're quite universally hated.
All of this would be contingent on whether or not things like reputation meters were used, or whether it was just assumed that some factions got along better or worse with others, and the higher up you move in a faction, the more polarized you become.
