I know there is a dialouge option that makes him want to accept it more. Which is it?
Thanks!

If you befriend him he will eventually reveal he has a sister who lives in Denerim. Visiting her is his personal quest. When you do, she turns out, against Alistair's hopes, to be an embittered shrew who is only interested in however much money she can get from him. After the initial encounter he will talk to you, and you can tell him, 'Everyone is out for themselves'. Later, Alistair will initiate a conversation saying he's been thinking it over and decided you're right. Here you will have options to reinforce the comment or go back on it. Reinforce it and you will have 'hardened' Alistair's personality. He will now be (slightly) more amenable to being King and to accepting a mistress, even if married.

Any female warden can always end up with him if he's not king unless you do a very specific thing that he really, really hates (you'll know it when the option presents itself).
Human nobles can marry him if he's king-you'll have to pick the "Alistair will be king, and I'll rule beside him" persuade option. I think choosing that is always successful if he's in love (I believe if it's just a political marriage, you'd need a certain number of ranks in persuade).
Any female warden who he's in love with (including human noble, if you want to be a mistress instead of queen) can become mistress, but I've never done that, so I'm not sure of the correct dialogue choices. That conversation happens right after the Landsmeet. I do know he has to be hardened for you to have that option, and I think you need a certain number of ranks in persuade (again, I'm not certain about that).
He can be king and you can marry him regardless of whether he's hardened or not, but he's happier being king if you did harden him.
Have fun.

Sounds like hardening him is a good idea. Thanks for the info!

Female human noble become his queen only. And with hardening i think u can make other romances continue as an affair.
This applies to men also if u have equal love mod - that is if u dont mind being called a woman.

My character is not a human noble, but an elf mage. I really don't like the idea of being a mistress. Is there any other option? Should I not harden him? I hope I have a save!

Yeah, I never liked the idea of being a mistress either.
If you want to continue the relationship and don't want to be a mistress, just don't make him king. He'll be happy and you can both go be Wardens together.
Since you seem like you don't want to make him king, whether you harden him or not doesn't really matter. Unhardened, he's happier about not being made king. Either way is fine.
If you harden him then DO NOT let him duel in the Landsmeet-he'll automatically make himself king if you're not a female human noble in that scenario.
It looks like you're playing on the PC-do you have any dialog mods? There's one that fixes at least some of his bugs after the Landsmeet where he always refers to himself as king.
Edit: Out of curiousity, how far are you in the game? I'm guessing this is your first playthrough, or at least your first as a female?

I have a save before I made him hardened so I can use that. Yes I am playing on the PC and I this is also my first female character and kind of first playthrough. I was half way through but restarted because I really did not like who my party was doing. I do not have any mods installed either I'm horrible at computer stuff XD. I'd rather have him un-hardened because I just liked him a lot more when he wasn't he just seemed... kinder I guess. I like the dialouge option a lot more when he's unhardened. When I hardened him he became all business like.

You don't want to make him king, correct? Then unhardened is fine-I preferred him that way too. How far are you? Which main quests have you done?

I have completed The broken Circle, The Arl of Redcliffe and I have a save just before I finished the Urn of Sacred Ashes (about to talk to Teagen) and it is before I hardened Alistair so I'll finish that make sure NOT to harden him and then go onto a Paragon of Her Kind. Thanks for your help! I would have gone on to be the mistress which is really not an ending I would have liked!

You're welcome.
If you don't know what happens in the rest of the game, do yourself a favor and avoid spoilers: it's much more awesome that way.
Enjoy!
Edit: If you decide to mod, get ejoslin's ZDF Dialog Fix: It fixes a ton of companion dialog bugs, including post-Landsmeet non-king Alistair. Warning: there are ENDGAME SPOILERS in the description. http://www.dragonage...file.php?id=928

Ok so I went to Goldanas and when I was done choose the option there are other people who care about you. That doesn't make him hardened right? He only hardens if you choose you should look out for yourself. Did I do this right?
