Gamlen's Greatest Treasure, the most endearing quest in the game?

At first, it seems like another dreary sidequest which involves going to places and killing things in hopes of earning a reward or artifact. But as you reach the end of the quest, you realize that the entire thing was (mostly) set up by Charade, Gamlen's estranged daughter who wanted to see how far her father would go to get the gem that he used to be so obsessed with. This is also when the title of the quest takes on a double meaning, referring to not only to the gem but Gamlen's daughter as his "greatest treasure".

The end result of the quest(if you chose to not to take the gem) is actually pretty heartwarming, seeing Gamlen reunited with the daughter that he never even knew he had and doubly so when he personally thanks you afterwards.

My sarcastic rogue took the gem and then told Gamlem he got a daughter but never introduced each other. I figured Charade wouldn't want to know a loser of a father and Gamlem deserved it.

I agree, the guy became a tad less slimy after that quest. I wish you'd been able to converse with your cousin a bit more, though

It was just nice knowing Hawke has some family left. As it is... For a game who's theme is feeling powerful, does all it can to tear hawke down with very few reedeming moments.

Discovering a lost family member, and reuniting her with gamlen was a moment of sunshine in a brooding storm.

Wait - I never got this quest. How do you trigger it, and what act?

It appears during Act 3. Just visit Gamlen's house from Lowtown and you'll find a note on a table with a quest marker hovering over it.

I missed this quest too, which is sad. It seems like one of the better moments in Act 3.

I like how Charade is proud to have you as her cousin and doesn't place blame on Gamlen, who, to be fair, was genuinely ignorant of her existence. I was expecting an imp with daddy issues, whining about her inability to form proper relationships with people because 'daddy never cared about me.'

Ah, that must have been it. I disable the quest markers. Thanks!

I loved Charade, despite her minor role. I'd really like for her to play a more major part in future titles. Perhaps a companion in an expansion? With differences in dialogue depending on whether you completed Gamlen's Greatest Treasure or not.

I see it as another Bioware Mindf*** whereby you're female relatives are too hot for tahiti.

Must be something in the bloodline......

There it is!  I can't believe it took this long for the incest joke.  Disappointing.
What other Bioware games does this occur in though?  Shepard has no family seen (one origin has a living mother but we never see her).  BG/BG2 had Imoen I guess, but I didn't think she was anything special and I usually <3 redheads.  I avoid anything to do with Star Wars like the plague though.

You spelled 'The Long Road' wrong in your topic title, OP.

Long Road was definiately the most endearing/funy/fabulous quest in the game. Triply so if you bring Isabela along on it.

But the Gamelin quest was great too. I always had an odd soft spot for my unlikable uncle and I really like my cousin.

Yeah that means Hawke still suffer from loss of beloveds in future. Gamlen, Charade....

As Aveline tries so hard to include herself to family, Aveline and Donnic.

I can see the opening of DA:3.

Hawke and rest of the living members of his/her family (Gamlen, Charade, Aveline and Donnic) are  trying to leave Kirkwall with a ship. Suddenly giant statues come alive and sunk the ship. Everyone except Hawke get drowned (We watch a long tear jerking suffocation scene of each one of them). Hawke swims to Ferelden and shore a darkspawn ridden beach. Ogre eats his/her dog and Hawke suicides. Posted Image

Dragon Age: Wrath of Giant Statues coming in Q2 2012 Posted Image

Seriously, yeah it is one of the heart warming quests of DA 2. I restarted Act 3 on my one run because I forgot to get that one.

The only thing I know is that after that quest I yearn for my own Wallop mallet.

Did she really think Gamlen would be able to get all the way into that cave she was hiding at by himself? If so she really didn't know Gamlen too well or at all.

I really enjoyed the quest. For the heck of it I named my next Hawke "Wallop" :)

Don't see it really being incest in anything but the most technical definition if you were to sleep with Imoen. Bhaal is a god afterall. Not sure there'd be a high risk of deleterious traits in any offspring.

Though from an appeal aspect from BG1=2 she always comes off as a little sister even before she's made to be your little sister. Not sure what romantic tendancies would arise from that in the first place.

I think my answer is both yes and no. You can cause a family reunion, or really work to prevent it from ever happening.

My mother used to be a nurse in a hospital nursery.  Believe me, those names wouldn't even rate a mention at the end of the day.  The things people name their kids is unbelievable.  Worst one I can remember is a Mexican couple that didn't speak English; they heard an English word and thought it was pretty.  They wanted to use it for a name for their daughter.  The staff told them what the word meant and nearly begged them not to do it, but they insisted.  I'm not sure about saying that word here, but suffice to say it's a part of the female anatomy.  ...  That poor, poor child.  High school will be hell.

Heh quite true. My wife used to do a little social work, and some of the names her clients named their kids was just hysterical. She had one who named their daughter 'Velveeta.' Another who named their daughter 'Female.' (they pronounced it Fee-mahl-ee)

Speaking of High School hell, I went to school with someone named Richard Face. I'm sure you can imagine what he was called...

it was a good quest. as much as I may criticise and parody (link in sig!) DA2, it does include the usual high quality of story and character writing we expect from BioWare, albeit clumsily shoved into a rushed game
Gamlen starts off as a bit of an ass but almost likeable. then after finding the will, and especially his love and money rant he becomes so much less sympathetic. but as time goes on, and especially thanks to Charade, we learn more about him and can feel a bit sympathetic for him again and if not like him, at least tolerate him. just like real family :P

I'd love to see more of Charade in future. there's still a lot we could learn about her, and a lot of potential for character development. plus she's obviously capable in a fight so would make a nice companion
