i am working on a fanfiction and i've noticed for the most part it is somewhat difficult figuring out what are the typical names for the different species.

there are a few thing that can help with some of the names,

Asari: (edit) greek-esque and Asari names seem to favor lots of flowing, romantic letters
like L, N and short A. serene, somewhat haughty names. and Egyptian
Mythology.
Batarian: I haven't seen or read any tips for naming them
Drell: (edit)They might be western african. "thane" krios" sound very tribal.
Elcor: i haven't seen or read any tips for naming them
Hanar: have two names, the face name and the soul name. (edit) flowing names
Humans: This can be easy
Krogan: (edit) the first name is the clan they come from, second is simple gutteral first name
Volus: They have two names but no family names
Salarian: A full name includes – in order – the name of a salarian's homeworld, nation, city, district, clan name and given name
Turians: (edit) Roman-esque
Quarian: Their names are composed of four parts—the quarian's given name and
clan name separated by an apostrophe, the title ('nar' means 'child of',
referring to their birth ship, while 'vas', adopted after the quarian
has completed their Pilgrimage and joined a ship, means 'crew of') and
the name of their vessel.

vorch: i am not even sure if this species has names. (edit) quick, sharp and or simple names
yahg: probably won't be in my story, but might be of use to someone else later. I haven't seen or read any tips for naming them.

that is it, finding a small list of the names, you can look at a wiki, and that shows the names of the notible characters of the species. if anyone can help with ways to name the species that would help me greatly and hopefully help others as well.

Krogan names need to be guttural, simple names in my opinion.
Hanar names on the other hand, in my eyes, need to be flowing, long names

Other than that I can't really think of other tips to people.

Turians are loosely based on Roman naming conventions it seems. Look up some Roman names and change some letters around, maybe combine two and you'll get something reasonably turian sounding.

I believe one of the vorcha on Omega was named 'Shissk' or something like that. Leads me to believe they have sharp and quick cut names.

Asari seem to follow a typical first name:last name style, but a bunch of known asari appear to share a T'(T apostrophe) before the last name. I'm not sure what significance this holds. (Examples include Liara T'Soni, Aria T'Loak, Aurana T'Meles).

Salarians do have that massively long name, but have you once heard of or seen a salarian use it in game or other media? (I don't know about the comics, I haven't read those) I think salarians only use their complex name in the presence of lots of family and for reproductive contract purposes. So unless you really plan on going into those areas, you really don't need to delve into salarian full names, in which case it's just given and clan. That'll be much easier on your creative juices, trust me. I almost went into that with the Dolannus brothers from my fic, and it ended up becoming a creative nightmare.

As for how each species' names should sound phonetically, the only resource we have on that is similarities between names seen in the games, books, etc. For instance, Asari names seem to favor lots of flowing, romantic letters like L, N and short A.

Yeah, I basically looked at the common names from the games (actually, mostly the original game, since when I started my story ME2 was still quite a way away from release and we'd got nothing, not even the first teaser) and then looked into their basic naming conventions and references. Turians seemed rather Roman-esque, while asari were somewhat Greek. I'd like to think the characters I created in my story had fitting names, but that's ultimately up to the readers to decide. Some of the main ones I had were the following:-

Yalo'Pala nar Lerta: A quarian, obviously.
Linna'Pala vas Rodus: also a quarian.
Intarr: a krogan (this name was also both a programming and Stargate reference too though).
Durrlex Gonamida: also a krogan.
Dr. Haedian: a salarian.
Lylanya Alanthios: an asari
Sytheria: ditto
Varinus: a turian
Dri'ala: again, an asari.
Tagarn: batarian
Arann: a drell

There was also a minor character I had called "Kriost Palmera" who was a salarian. Remove the 't' from the end of the first name of course and you get "Krios" which ended up being Thane's last name in ME2, which was a funny coincidence since I named him before I even knew of Thane.

Putting in subtle jokes/references that fit can be fun too. For example, I named the ship of the main asari character as "Karina" because it seemed kind of asari for one, but because "Carina" means "ship" in Latin. On top of that it's a constellation.

Again, I'd like to think they fit the ME universe, but unless BioWare give a thumbs up it's largely up to the readers. The best you can do is try and follow what conventions you can with the info you have and feel what fits best really. I think the ultimate proof of success is actually more if nobody really notices the names and just accepts them.

If you're referencing the character, shouldn't it be "Int*arr"? :P
I want one of those Stargate intars thought... they're like futuristic paintball guns. With electricity.

(Kicks himself back on topic)

When naming Asari, I try to give them serene, somewhat haughty names. I lean towards Egyptian Mythology for possible inspiration. Fun fact: 'Asari' is another name for the Egyptian God 'Osiris', dunno if that was intentional or not.

thanks for the help, I'll update the list with the addition ideas for the names. later i will gather some examples from some stories of each of the species names to help with naming. I agree that it is upto the writter to try and come up with something that fits, and ultimately it is the read that decides if the name fits the race.

Heck, you actually started a guide that others can use as well.

As for some advice, some puns work too for names. Recall Admiral Zaal'Koris's talk about the Qwib-Qwib and the other ship names he'd work under, the Iktomi and Defrahnz. This turns out to be a more humorous name for English speaking people as the titles vas Iktomi and vas Defrahnz are puns of "vasectomy" and "vas deferens."

So, it doesn't hurt to throw pun names in there or twist normal words and phrases around, especially for comic relief.

As has been mentioned, you can look at the culture your alien race is based on and get some ideas from things like city names, country names, names of real people, etc. You can often get good results just by switching around some syllables.

For an Asari for example, a good name might be Athenya (a-thin-ya) T'Seres (t-sair-es). Athenya deriving from "Athens", T'Seres deriving from the somwhat common Asari them of T apostrophe consonant, followed by two syllables.

Also, I noted that you have the krogan name backwards. It's clan name first, THEN given name.

e.g. Urdnot Wrex, Urdnot Grunt

My understanding of the Asari T'Name is that it perhaps denotes some special social status - Asari with a last name prefixed by T' tend to be more influential figures. The pop star has a T, Matriarch Benezia was likely originally Benezia T'Soni, perhaps Aria is using T'Loak as symbolism (the Queen of Omega).

However, the named asari (rana thanoptis, shiala, that one in noveria that attacks you) don't have a T are likely ordinary people as opposed to whatever asari nobility is.

Asari:
eastern greek. Mix of greek and Egyptian in my view. hard to say their names dont seem to be that special.

Batarian:
They remind me of eastern european names but taking the russian part out of it. Foreign. harsh

Drell:  They might be western african. "thane" krios" sound very tribal.

Elcor:
They... no idea really. brutish would not do them justice.

Hanar:
They, if the name we are speaking off is the one given to strangers? or soul names. usually their soul names would  never be uttered. So not sure how their non soul names go by. I know soul names are rethorical given the hanar's inclinations. if he is hyperactive "high spirits", if its a fast swimmer "water glider"

Humans: lol duh

Krogan:
They have a very northern european tribal feel to them. harsh, short. Alemani, or saxon tribes to them. maybe viking names woudl give you an idea. "Grog" actual viking last name. "urdnot"..."Hashtrol" (last viking) very... ellaborate in their wording.

Volus:
They merchantile, tribal. Middle eastern I would look into. Name is a lot to them... or at least last name "clan"

Salarian:
They have an western european style. renossance era? complicated long names depicting their status, and origins as well as line of labor? No name for them is just a name, is a title given or earned depending of their actions. As akward as it sounds their name would most likely resemble an ID number than anything else.
(, given name, minute, hour, day year born. City country. Mom(matriarchal society), dad's last name, line of work, married to, her or his wife husband line of work, greatest accomplishment)

Most likely thats why they would be unpronauncible. you dont know when one word ends and another one begins.

Turians:
They have roman names mostly. easily found on google I quess

Quarian:
They have easy names. Make up a name followed by their cultural rules of place of birth, last name, and ship stationed at. basically the only thing that differs quarians from one another is their last name. since the 1, 3 and 4 might be common at some point.

vorcha:
not sure we have enough information on how their names work. Short, to the point, unintentional, and usually given by someone else. Something resembling a pet?

Ur, Kaz, Tok?

no ened to have the shhhh of a snake thing or predator style but vorcha are ackward and short names. againw e dont have enough info to say anything about their culture.
