Unless, you just like the story, is there any point to playing ME2 on anything less than Insanity?

ME1 is a little different. I start on Veteran until I level up my character enough (anywhere between level 25-30), then I bump it up to Hardcore, then I usually finish on Insanity difficulty by the end of the game.

That's like asking if there is any point in having neutral choices..why not just have Paragon and Renegade, right? ...

^This.
I personnaly think Insanity has the right mixture between challenge, headdesking and rewarding victories for the game to make more fun.
Blazing through the Derelict Collector Ship Platform instance with only Claymore and Charge without dying once is fun.
Blazing through the same instance on Insanity dying here and there and then finally getting the perfect run usually ends me up laughing maniacally. I think the latter suits me better, which rhymes and is therefore even more preferable (
I like a nice challenge here and there and find Insanity to have a pretty good mixture.
Plus, I am still hoping for some nice rewards in ME3 for finishing ME2 on insanity and thus wouldn't want to miss out any boni I might be getting

I think if you like the story and don't like combat and/or shooters, Casual is fine but why have anything inbetween Insanity and Casual. Either or, right? Insanity makes the game rewarding...
Is this a serious question? Not everyone is at the same skill level, and some people PREFER to play below their skill level. The different options are there so you can find one that suits you.

You only play on Insanity though...

Well yeah, but I understand why there are different difficulty settings.

Sure I understand...but imagine playing on Normal...as an Adept for example....probably so OP it's beyond comprehension!

Yep, when I did some speedruns through ME1 to get my planned six canon Shepards, I also played on casual to breeze through as quick as possible (changed to insanity though before fighting the final boss, hopefully that gets recognized as insanity playthrough for possible ME3 rewards) as I already experienced the full game on insanity beforehand.

The option to toggle defenses on and off (HC and Insanity) would silence most "biotics are gimped on Insanity" crowd - they can feel great and powerful for playing on Insanity whilst still being a biotic god, others, who don't have issues with using guns and squadmates, can play with the defense system in place. (DA FF system is a good example too, why NM only?)
A truly perfect difficulty system would have an insane amount of different settings to enable anyone to play the game the way they like it best. Only two settings (very easy and very hard) is not a good idea.

I usually play on Veteran. Hardcore and Insanity can be satisfying, but sometimes I find them a bit immersion breaking. Primarily when I encounter armor or shields/barriers on enemies that shouldn't have them. It just feels out of place.
This is the reason I always start out on Normal in games and move to other difficulties later. If regular enemies are unnaturally tough, it completely breaks immersion.

Shepard and his/her squadies have shields - why should enemies not have them? That doesn't make sense.
I like the added protection system, but I wouldn't mind having an option to turn it off without changing AI behavior and damage output = best of both worlds.

So in the end i decided to stick with hardcore, i can´t use the powers as freely as i did in ME1, but at least it is relatively easy to strip down the defenses and use the powers later. I find it challenging but not absurdly so, and i don´t have to worry about min/maxing or finding the best powers and spamming them.

That doesn't bother me. But for immersion, I don't like it when the average Eclipse merc is tougher than cyborg superhero Shepard. It's not so bad in ME2. I found this really bad in Gears though, where I got so sick of having to shoot everything a billion times that I just ran around trying to chainsaw everything to death.

Often this has revealed some great moves that I'd not think of during an Insanity play.
Then I return to Insanity and try the new combos out. It requires more planning, a little more time, and I have to be deliberate about what I'm doing and what I'm ordering my squad to do. But when it works out, the biotic combos tend to be a bit more satisfying.

Pretty much what I do as well - Hardcore is plenty challenging and fun to play through with the new enemy protections without the game becoming too difficult. I rather hated going though my one Insanity playthough, which I found to be incredibly tedious and time-consuming (seems like your weapons do a mere fraction of the damage and even regular enemies can take for-ev-er to go down).Mykel54 wrote...
I hate how above veteran most powers (specially biotics) are useless, as you have to strip the barriers. Now despite that, i now always play on hardcore. I tried insanity but it was just too much min/max for my tastes (sometimes you enjoy a certain setup) and i hate the penalties that the player gets. Veteran ended up being too easy for me, as well as unrealistic (having most enemies without protections at all is very silly, when all your squad has some shield or barrier, feels unfair).
So in the end i decided to stick with hardcore, i can´t use the powers as freely as i did in ME1, but at least it is relatively easy to strip down the defenses and use the powers later. Generally I think good games have a good "second hardest" difficulty, which presents all the challenges of the "hardest" difficulty but doesn't require you to be a seasoned veteran to beat.
Best example is perhaps Civilization IV: highest difficulty level (Deity) is almost impossible to beat without luck, but the second highest level (Immortal) is just as fun and much more doable.

I play insanity for the story. Don't see reason why I shouldn't do both, plus it forces me to learn a class play style that suits me.
Agreed.
