Anyone just give Merrill Blood of the First and skip the rest? How did it go?
Which is the better bonus, strictly speaking in gameplay practicality not story, Friend or Rival?
-EDIT-
What builds do you use? I was think a Spirit / Entropy build with just Blood of the First (something like this, learned in that order probably) instead of the common Primal Heavy build. Looks good (playing on Nightmare, I have an idea for using the bomb spell effectively)?

Thats what i always tend to do. I have always found primal/entropy/arcane(for the 2 sustains and crushing prison) to be the way to go. I've never really liked her aura thingo due to its short range and the wounds of the past requires a point investment in it to get.

I like the rivalry bonus better, 1 more mana/health isnt much. You don't need that much and what you can get from items is more than enough. 10% damage resistance though is just badass.
It does mean however you end up feeling horrible being mean to poor merril (the only time i can bring myself to do it is if i'm rivalmancing her)

Fully upgraded Wrath of the Elvhen does tons of damage - around 4~5 times more than Aura of Pain, for example. And its Nature damage receives a 100% bonus against Shades and Qunari, among others.

You can have two dozen Shades hogging Merrill and the next moment they just automatically melt into goo.

Plus, if you're letting Merrill use Blood Magic, then she's getting all her sustains practically for free - why not get Wrath of the Elvhen?

Ensnare is awesome too.

Arcane Shield is practically useless due to how Defense works in this game. As for Elemental Resistances, Merrill has 2 Rune Slots (which are, like, 100% better than the Rune Slots on your Champion Armor).

Yes, her Rivalry passive is better. Perhaps BioWare is encouraging people to be mean to her aftering making her way too cute.

Better passive or not, it's no fun being a jerk to sweet little old Merrill.:crying:

It's hilarious rivalling Merrill. She gets all snippy and throws you out of her house lolz.

Here is the Merrill I've used for my last few playthroughs (Normal/Hard, Warrior/Rogue Hawke, Merrill as solo mage for all but a few encounters)

Any remaining levels... Stone's Throw?  Hexes + Sleep? Disorient CCCs?

I usually do Stone's Throw, though I wish the tactics could separate a condition from a target ala FFXII

Yes, her Rivalry passive is better. Perhaps BioWare is encouraging people to be mean to her aftering making her way too cute.

Is that really the consensus?

I love Wrath of the Elvhen. Upgrade it with Arlathan's Grace so she'll regain health and then set her to use Stone's Throw on any ally that's swarmed with enemies when Merrill is under 50% health.

My first playthrough, I didn't bother with Stone's Throw at all because it seemed useless. But this works like a charm.

Isn't Wrath of the Elvhen not FF safe?

Drop the Entropy tree outside of Hex of Torment, and take the rest of the Primal tree. Overused? Yeah, but there's a reason why...

Also, I don't like the Disorient CCC with Spirit (requires too many points for Rogues to get reliable access to it), so I'd just do Spirit Bolt + Walking Bomb, then invest the rest to get the Deep Wounds upgrade to Wounds of the Past, then maybe go for Paralyzing Prison since you should have a couple points lying around.
