Personally I'm glad my final Warden wasn't the Dalish elf so did not meet her.
BTW: I understand in the Dalish elf origin story she'd have been worried about Tamlen so not liable to be so chirpy.

She had no character depth to her during the DE origin. She was a bit arrogant(which you see plenty of that in DA2), but otherwise, she was transparent. Her, along with everyone else in the DE origin.LyndseyCousland wrote...
I'm not saying you're wrong but explain how she was a blank slate, please?

It's evident in the personality she had in Origins where she was serious and composed to DA2 where she's having trouble being social with Hawke because she's not used to dealing with humans (which isn't the case when Origins Merrill meets Duncan).
Heh, indeed.
DA1: "Andara atish'an, Duncan of the Grey Wardens. I am Merrill, the keepers apprentice"
DA2: "I'm so sorry, I didn't ask your name. Unless... it's not rude to ask a human their name, is it? I'm Merrill, which you probably already knew. I'm rambling, sorry"
About the only thing which seems remotely similiar is her fascination with the ruins and the mirror, wishing she'd had more time to stay and study it.

You're doing it wrong, you should've posted a cute Merrill related image...

I didn't even feel that big of a change to be honest. Merrill's awkwardness mostly came from being amongst humans. In the Dalish origin she's amongst her clan and thus acts very differently than what we see in DA2.
And really, there was so little we saw of her in the origin that I can't say I actually knew her, so I never really felt a personality change.
As for her looks, I love the change. WUV IT!!!!!!!

Err, not that I liked her much in the Dalish origins in the first place but turning the serious and stern Merrill into such a babbling, annoying idiot for the sake of teh cute let me facepalm hard.
Seriously.
I honestly never understand why people make this argument. Being bad socially doesn't mean someone is an idiot. Merrill had culture shock in a human city as a member of the Dalish and she was somewhat of an introvert. I don't think you can compare being socially inept to a lack of knowledge - she demonstrates her intellect and her proficiency with magic numerous times, as well as re-constructing a two thousand year old elven device with a piece of glass.

There is incosistency from the character she was in Origins to what she is now by attitude, demeanor & even how the race looks of course. I think they did a good job of just moving on to what hte character needed to be. I also like how her default outfit was a slight throw back to the Tevinter robe she was wearing via the shoulders. I think the writers may have played the naive card a little too much but that is what they wanted. She does seem to get distracted in conversations though. "wait what were we talking about?" "I can? I mean yes of course I can."

It would bug me, but the Merrill in DA2 is obviously better than the one in DA:O, so the changes are good in my book!

If you check out her boob size in DA2 she has massive boobs for an elf. Calling an adult "cute" is plainly a bit of an insult.

In the DE origin, you're both part of the same group. She's talking to you as an in-group member. Mind you, she can be at the edge of the group, but it's not at all like talking to humans, who are both not her clan and not her race. It's a big difference and I would expect her personality to be very, very different just from that fact.

I've seen plenty of cute penguins, and they have been adults.

When I mentioned about thieves and robbers in Lowtown, she replied, "The people here are so nice! Always sticking their hands in your pockets, I wonder why the Dalish weren't so friendly."
But her tone and expression had me thinking she meant it as sarcasm.

Animals are not people. Only adult Fairy penguins are cute btw
You only call an adult "cute" if you think they are attractive.

I don't know why everyone keeps calling her "cute", Merril isn't a child.
People call her cute because she's cute. Being a child is not a necessary prerequisite for being cute.

The correct term would be "sweet" she has a very sweet personality.
She's not a child.
