Some topics are too glorious to let die.

One of the longest and most brutal debates surrounding Mass Effect 2 was whether or not we'd be seeing them again in ME3.  While most agreed that everyone would at least make a brief appearance, the fact that every single ME2 squadmate could die seemed to be a serious issue if the developers planned on putting them back on the team for the final chapter.  However, Game Informer's recent 12-page reveal article confirmed that Garrus Vakarian, everyone's favorite meatfaced, pissy turian will again be "playable to some degree" in ME3, proving that at least some of the old squad will be running and gunning alongside Shepard for, at an absolute minimum, a mission or two.

Other confirmed returning squadmates are Ashley/Kaidan and Liara.  Wrex, Mordin, and Legion are confirmed to be appearing as well, but as of now it is unknown whether or not they will be on the squad.

So, what does it all mean?  Who else do you think is coming back, and to what degree?  What roles could these possibly-dead teammates play?  Will some of them be on the squad the whole time, or only a few missions for gits and shiggles?

This thread will be updated as more information becomes available.

All I can say that Legion better be a squadmate.

Thane better be alive,

Legion and Grunt and Miranda better be squaddies at least for a couple of missions (the more the merrier),

Wrex better be kicking ass,

Liara better be a Shadow Broker, not a 100% squaddie

P.S. Also, Tali better be as less annoying as possible.

Well they already announced Garrus so why should I care about the other Squaddies?

I think squadmates will come back based on a popularity meter.

More Popular = More Screen Time and Permanent Squad Mate

Less Popular = Less Screen Time and Cameo.

It's simple logic here people.

I can see Samara leaving, due to Shepard being on trial and potentially on the run from the law at the start. Thane may die - even better if you romanced him, was it would introduce an element of tragedy and the feeling not everyone can be saved. Jack, unless loyal, has no reason to stick around. Same for non-loyal Cerberus members.

The main ones I want to have in my squad are, in order, Garrus, Legion, Mordin, Tali and grunt. As much as I like the other characters I won't be too fussed if they're not permanent squaddies. Would prefer them to be, but we can't have everyone.

First, gonna post something Bioware has said about how they feel regarding ME3:

"It has to be one or the either. Either you really let people's choices have repercussion. Or, the choice doesn't really affect things and then things end up coming back together. As we're doing parts one and two, we have a really difficult challenge in terms of creating very different outcomes and yet being able to continue the story. The good thing about the third one will be that we no longer have that constraint and things can diverge as far as we can make them go.

That actually will be our goal with the whole trilogy. To take all of the things you've done in Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2 and then just let it go. Let it diverge into wildly different conclusions. That's the real fun of having played Mass Effect 1 and 2 and then going into the third one will be that you've set all of these things in motion and now we can let them diverge. I'm not worried that people will play it and think 'Oh well I missed all of this content that would have been different if I had made other choices' because what that does is make you interested in replaying it. The replay value of Mass Effect 1 was huge, but Mass Effect 2 is much more so and I think it just continues into the conclusion of the trilogy
"   -Bioware on Mass Effect 3

To me this is a grand experiment in just how far one can push diverging paths in a story using the wonderful magic of computers.

I think Bioware is going to include as many squadmembers are they can, as well as many other "variables" based on choices made in ME1 and ME2.

They're going to make us hurt for the dumb choices and they're going to give us payoff for the good ones.

We fans of this story are probably going to end up playing this game series over and over again so we can see the entire range of "what can happen".

I think all surviving squadmates (yes, even Thane) will return in some capacity and I really don't see why none of them couldn't have a "fun" moment or two that involves them at least being a temp squaddie.  Lair of the Shadow Broker used this concept to great effect and popularity.

I personally found her to be in several cases. :(

I'm working on myself, though. Trying to separate popularity from the character, myself from my Shepard and all that stuff.

Hmm, I just keep thinking about who's been confirmed so far, and how it relates to whether they're permanent, mission specific, cameos, etc...

I bet Liara and Ash/Kaidan are pretty surefire permanent squadmates. Sure, Liara has the Shadow Broker thing, but there's gotta be a reason for all her plot armor, so she's guaranteed to be a constant presence in ME3. And VS fans rightfully should get to have their favorites back on the battlefield, after getting left out of ME2. James Sanders seems like another permanent squaddie, since his role can be used for exposition purposes for new players.

Garrus had better be a permanent squadmate too. I'd still buy the game even if he wasn't, but not having Garrus as a permanent option for the squad... wow, that'd start a backlash if nothing else did.

It's curious which ME2 squaddies are confirmed first: Garrus, the easy fan favorite regardless of his LI status, and Legion & Mordin, probably the two most popular non-LIs. Announcing those three first seems calculated to raise interest, and it also indicates that more popular characters could get more screentime. If that's the case, I wouldn't be surprised if Tali and Miranda both get major roles, possibly/hopefully even permanent squadmate status. Between those two, Garrus, and the returning trio from ME1, Bioware will appease a huge part of the fanbase (especially if Legion and Mordin also get at least temporary squadmate status).

Not sure how Jack and Thane will be dealt with... both are definitely popular, but they could also be easier to write into smaller roles, especially if they're not LIs... Jack's a wildcard and Thane's dying. I'm sure there'll be some sort of resolution with both though, hopefully much more than just a cameo or two.

Or I could be completely wrong and the only two permanent squadmates are going to be James Sanders and Jacob. :o

I still hold on to the (perhaps unrealistic) view that they should all return. Sure, plausible reasons exist for excluding a character or reducing them to cameo's if the writers so choose, but quite frankly, if Bioware didn't want to return so many characters, then why create so many in the first place? They could have had less characters (we'd never have seen them and not missed them) and Bioware would have had more resources to work on the main plot of ME:2. I kinda hold the view that Bioware made their bed, so lets see em lie in it. :D

Well I'll be jiggered, they actually closed it down.

Oh well, on to new digs I guess.

As for me, I reckon we'll be seeing six to eight of our old squaddies return as a "Core" group, squaddies who are always with us and always available, with the rest coming back in as "temp" or "backup" characters, who are with us on certain missions and then play support roles (like scientist or comm officer) afterwards.

My guess for the "core" group? Grunt, Garrus, Jacob, Miranda, Sanders, Legion and Kaishley, by virtue of all of them being hardcore front-liners, or because of their devotion to Shepard (Really? A Krogan not following his battlemaster into glorious battle? Really?).

Characters I'm sure will come back but may not play in the permanent squad (but will nevertheless feature heavily in the story): Mordin, Tali, Liara and Jack, for various reasons ranging from continuing LI to the fact that they're just too cool to keep out.

Characters I have no idea what's going to happen: Thane and Samara.

I haven't included Zaieed or Kasumi because I never got their DLC and know absolutely nothing about them.

Edit. Oh. Derp. Knew I was forgetting someone. I don't think Wrex will ever be "on our squad", but I'd better dollars to donuts (No, I don't know what that means, just roll with it) that we'll fight BESIDE him on Tuchanka.
