What?

We're continuing the discussion of possible returning squadmates we were having in your thread before you tried to take your ball and go home. So we bought a new ball and continuing it

Please, I know what the OP wanted to do by making this Topic and linking my old Topic in the post. It was a clear jab at me and it was really pathetic. OP didn't even try to hide this fact.

Than again I'm a very popular guy it seems. So I suppose I'll let this go because it's funny and it means that you're relying upon me to promote your Topic. In a way I guess you could say I'm flattered.

I'm 90% sure a good deal of the fanbase will hate Sanders anyway. Like Kaidan, and Jacob. Mass Effect doesn't have a good track record with leading men.

The problem is with an insiduous anti-human prejudice amongst the fanbase!

Semi-serious about that. In any case Sanders hopefully won't have problems external to the character to derail him: Kaidan had the Carth connection that people seemed to enjoy clinging to, and Jacob was sunk by Hale's "I was just interested in talking for a bit." delivery.

I sometimes go wander off to the characters and fan creations board... to dabble there a bit, and honestly Kaidan isn't that disliked. He has a lot of fans, and more people managed to avoid cheating on him than managed to avoid cheating on Ash, it seems.

I actually never got the Carth association - they are totally different dudes. Then again I never really liked Carth, and I really liked Kaidan. I think Kaidan is popular enough among the dude-fanciers who play this game - he just lacks that crossover appeal, so there's the general impression that he isn't popular. If you only looked at what the dude-fancying fanbase though about, say, Miranda, I think you'd find a similar ratio of "meh."

Oh, you think THAT is scary?

Here is what your character select screen will look like, if you killed your whole squad in ME2:
Entire Team is Jacob.

[A picture of hell]

Noooooooooooo!

Nah, the main problem with Kaiden and Jacob is that they're plain normal guys

See, this is the thing with Jacob. I know full-well that of everyone in ME the one I would actually like to know IRL is Jacob. He's just a plain, normal, boring, good-hearted guy. And in a video game that makes him the least liked character, because video games are, by and large, about the exciting and exotic - especially if they're sci-fi. That said, I do value his straight man to the galaxy's horde of crazy. I'd actually like him back over Kaidan or Ashley.

Of the ME2 squaddies, we know Garrus will reappear on the squad, and Casey implied that it would be for one mission.

Not much to gloat about, rly.

"Somecharacters are going to be absolutely core to the story. Their squadmembers, and the whole structure of the story pivots around them. Others can be conventional squadmates who you can choose to have with you or not..." Casey Hudson

Garrus would fall into the bolded category if made a squadmate. Why else would Casey explicitly mention that some squadmates would be plot critical and others wouldn't if they had no intentions of bringing back some of the ME2 crew?

Besides, Casey also mentions Garrus can join your crew and have a potential personal quest - why would a temp companion have their own quest if they're only available for a brief time?

The obvious answer is that he's available for the quest that he gives you if he is alive. That said, I hope (and think) he will be perma-squaddie.

Sadly, it will, because there's some kind of unwritten rule that we can only have a maximum of 1 squad member from any alien race at any given time.

Why Gavorn?  Can't we get a female turian instead?

Then again, if I had things my way, the entire squad would be turians.

Yay and verily didst Elite Midget come down forth from the sky, and with the light of self-righteousness he blessed this poor humble thread with "you may continue."

How the low and unworthy rejoiced!  Sheep and goats and M&M's were sacrificed upon the altar!

If the female Turian is a member of the Vorcha Task Force, then yea. :P

Well it's not totally surprising that Bioware is going the route of some squadmates returning, while others more or less do not. That's what they did in ME2, albeit somewhat selectively.  As Vigil would say: "This was one of many outcomes that was anticipated."

I should probably attempt to find an old thread or two I made analyzing squadmate viability. I think the most important thing about characters is what impact they have on the story. It was kind of obvious that in ME2 Ashley/Kaidan and Liara we're given plot armor so that could probably be in ME3. Well that has been pretty much confirmed at this point.

ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL

Image IPB

HUMANS THAT WHICH YOU KNOW AS SQUADMATES ARE ULTIMATELY DOOMED, BUT SOME HAVE BEEN TARGETED FOR PLOT ASCENSION. WE WILL DISCUSS POSSIBLE VIABILITY.

Garrus
-Likely temp squadmate
-Has been relatively unimportant to the story itself
-Considered "too failure", likely only helps Shepard with Turian dilemma
-Popularity factor useful for sales, could become full-time squadmate
-Strong loyalty to Shepard

Tali
-Likely temp squadmate or cameo
-May rejoin her people if not exiled
-Likely helps Shepard with Geth vs. Quarian war
-Popularity factor useful for sales, could become full-time squadmate
-Strong loyalty to Shepard

Miranda
-Likely cameo or temp squadmate
-Cerberus is now at conflict with Shepard
-Has little reason to assist Shepard any further
-May help Shepard with Cerberus issue

Jacob
-Likely cameo or temp squadmate
-Cerberus is now at conflict with Shepard
-Has little reason to assist Shepard any further
-May help Shepard with Cerberus issue

Mordin
-Likely major cameo or  temp squadmate
-May help with Salarian people
-Genophage issue may need to be resolved
-Popularity factor noted
-Possible full-time squadmate

Grunt
-Likely cameo
-Several factors negate full return (could remain in tube)
-Has little reason to serve Shepard
-May help Shepard on Krogan homeworld

Jack
-Likely cameo
-Has little reason or interest to stick with Shepard
-Is more inclined to travel on her own
-Could help Shepard against Cerberus

Thane
-Likely cameo
-Has little reason to stick with Shepard
-Dying and needs to reconcile with son
-May help Shepard with Hanar/Drell situation if present

Samara
-Likely cameo
-Could have been replaced by Morinth
-Is a Justicar and her duty comes first
-Probably will help Shepard with Asari issue

Legion
-Likely major cameo
-Several factors hinder full return (could be sold)
-Geth war is a critical issue
-Will likely help Shepard with Geth
-Geth nature, makes Legion 2.0 possible
-Shepard fanboy

Zaeed
-Lucky if cameo
-May have something to do with Blue Suns

Kasumi
-Lucky if cameo
-May have something to do with Greybox/Alliance

Wrex
-Cameo or temp squadmate (if alive)
-Will likely help with Krogan/Genophage issue

Kaidan
-Most likely full time squadmate
-Assigned to Shepard with the Alliance
-Maybe a Spectre

Ashley
-Most likely full time squadmate
-Assigned to Shepard with the Alliance
-Maybe a Spectre

Liara
-Most likely full time squadmate

-May still have Shadowbroker duties
-Fairly important story character

RELEASING CONTROL

My gut feeling tells me that ME2 characters are going to be largely regulated to temp roles. And while being a temp squad member is better then nothing, it's still basically a glorified cameo. Albeit "Horizon" was the only cameo I didn't care for. That said it would be nice if Garrus and Tali remained full-time squadmates (and this is rather universal among fans). Also both seem fairly faithful to Shepard no matter what. I'm guessing if they are dead they could be replaced by a Female Turian/Male Quarian just to make things interesting for alternate playthroughs.

However I can't see Bioware doing this for more then 2 characters since that just gets too crazy to create that many alternative characters if they are dead. Plus it's expensive to hire additional VAs, etc.

So I assume for the time being Liara and Ashley/Kaidan make a full return and the rest of the crew is new. In fact we know this James Sanders will literally be the "new guy", partly to help new players feel less lost. I expect ME2 crew will be entirely temp roles or cameos. But I don't mind being pleasantly surprised if I'm wrong.

I'm also not a big fan of his new look. I liked that he wasn't some stereotypical hottie before, but was just this average dude who seemed like kind of a dork.

I'm probably in the minority in that, though.
