What self-respecting company would allow such an egregious violation of its customers' trust go on for this long?

This is ridiculous. Bioware's making it pretty clear that their DLC is unreliable and should be considered a risky investment.

I wonder if this server outage is also related to my being unable to upload a character profile to this site? I've never been able to get that feature to work right. My achievements upload fine, but that's all. Can't upload screenshots either. Seems unlikely since this problem has been since before Friday... but maybe it is related? I'd love to have a character profile on here, but it seems too much to hope for (that it would be caused by the auth server being down).

I am not sure if it is related... there's a post the General forum saying the Bioware Social Net will be down for some server updates late Tuesday night (US-Pacific time).  That's unrelated to the DLC issue, but it may address the profile stuff.

According to that post though the downtime starts today (4/12). I've not been able to upload a character profile since I bought the game, which was on 3/25. Probably not related, unfortunately. And I've tried every solution I can find... but that's a discussion for another thread. I won't hijack this one.

Sad thing is, I haven't really been playing DAO for quite a while now. I've beat it several times and have been jumping around other games. Now, to date, we've bought a DAO, a few of the DLCs separately, Awakenings, Dragon Age 2, and DAO Ultimate Edition. I think we have shoved our full share of money for this game.

On Friday I got the bug to play again. I had not played all the DLC content, and my husband bought the Ultimate Edition a little over a month ago. I had a character that I had started a few weeks ago, but only played a couple levels. I'll play that one, I thought.

Nope, haven't been able to. DLC unauthorized. WTF? Since Friday I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice, read the sticky posts about DLC authorizing, checked all of the content, and set administrator rights for the game launcher. I even redownloaded all of the content individually from the registered content page (on a side note, that fixed my autoloot problem).

Now I find out 4 days later that it wasn't a problem on my end, but on theirs?

I can almost understand that the problem happened originally on Friday, and therefore it was the weekend. No one was there to fix the problem. But for no one to be online all weekend to post a 2 second warning to everyone trying to find out what was wrong?  Its not like this is an obscure game that only a handful of people play. I can't mention Dragon Age amongst my friends without someone in the group jumping in to talk about how awesome of a game it is. This is a damn popular game. And you are telling me that there is not a single moderator that can receive a call from tech support (who have been listening to customers b***h for days) and then post a simple, "We are aware of the problem" message. You can't tell me that not one of the customer service or support people have internet access at home.

*sigh* My faith in EA declines every time I get suckered into buying from them. I saw the writing on the wall when they bought Origin Worlds (what was that, a decade ago?).

And it still comes down to I actually am in the mood to play and I CAN'T.

Okay, I'm done rambling now.

Over 80 hours, hours that I've been obsessing over in dark, perpetual agony. I sit curled up in fetal position, rocking my chair back and forth, refreshing the screen, muttering prayers to the Maker, waiting... waiting.

I hear the ticking of the clock
I'm lying here the room's pitch dark

I'm wondering where you are tonight
No answer on the forum
And the night goes by so very slow
Oh I hope that it won't end though
Annoyed

Till now I always got by on my own
I never really cared until I met Alistair
And now it chills me to the bone
How do I get you annoyed
How do I get you annoyed

You don't know how long I have wanted
To click the mouse and join the fight.
You don't know how long I have waited
and I was going to post it tonight.

But the ETA is still my unknown
and we love DAO but we are alone
Alone

I hardly think making 2 comments, one of which was in direct response to another user, qualifies as hijacking. In fact, my comments are related to the thread at hand, since I was wondering if the auth server being down might be part of the other problem I'm experiencing. What are you, Thread Führer? Honestly, get over yourself.

Do NOT worry I think he was kidding! However I already posted the Story in pages 14 and 15 of this thread. That dream should ... sum it all up... Yes, YES! It should.

"The memory leak bug"? Yes, that one.
However, I've had this problem twice: PC with 2gb ram, windows xp, and PC with 4gb ram (bought new), windows 7. Hence my desperation. Any ideas?

My latest exchange with EA Tech Support:

Philbert: Hi, my name is Philbert. How may I help you?

I spoke with Philbert too! ...on friday night. And he told me the same things, verbatim. Poor guy, I think tech support must be as stressed as we are about this problem. ...maybe they're not allowed to joke? Or fraternize with us, giving us more details (assuming they even have more details)? Imagine that: forced by their supervisors to act like helpful, but cold, bots... "Philbert, ignore his jokes. Don't answer them. Don't even laugh. It's not allowed. It's unprofessional."
(after so much waiting my mind is wandering).

Well, it's good to know that they know
about the issue. We still may be ignored but at least they are aware of
the issue. I am going to create a DA:O board game and you guys can all
come over and play. I promise you won't have to authenticate a darn
thing! (But you do have to bring booze.)

Awww, now I want to come and play too!

Asuryan, the only idea I have is to check out Dragon Age Nexus. There was a mod on there that was supposed to solve it. I don't know if it works.

piece of crap, cant believe they havenet resolved this issue yet. Where did they get their IT people from? Free with a packet of coca pops I suspect.

Not sure what worse from the officail annoucement:
1) It took them 4 days to actauly make an annouchment or...
2) They dont actually know what the problem is.

EA probably have outsourced their IT to a 3rd world country

It's easy to solve the problem

1) backup save games
2) uninstall DA
3) download ilegal pirated version from torrent along with DLC
4) restore save games
5) play DA with DLC

Not really an option I want to take, but I appreacaite the irony that the DRM seems to be operating in reverse Posted Image

When I worked IT, I would've had at least a temp fix done w/i 4 hours. & that is set-up of a new set of hardware loaded w/ the latest back-up of the software, then gone thru the rest of the servers 1 by 1. Doing it that way would atleast allow for gamers to be able to play, it might be a bit slow untill more units were fixed, but there would be playability.

Yep, I work in IT and while I admit I dont know what there set up it at bioware/EA I cant say any place I've worked at would have allowed a site that services external customers to be down like this. I've heard of people lossing their jobs over lesser situations. I just cant understand how dont have a disastor recovery plan, and if someone patched of changed something surely they would have a change control procedure. meh, I'm just glad it's not my ass on the line.

Well, why don't you consider this situation:
Content servers are most probably legacy software, unmaintained aside from the occasional quick reboot. Through all the months, nothing has changed (yeah, I am oversimplifying). And one day they stop working and will not start. If that's a bug, it was not introduced recently, so how would you determine the cause, considering the servers are in release version without any relevant logging?

Their servers are probably a set configuration, so getting a back-up unit running would be a quick job. the most time involved, would be loading the latest back-up of the software.

Bioware/EA should do stuff like this instead of all this DRM crap...
http://www.joystiq.c...asylum-pirates/

Be pretty funny to see how it would turn out with Dragon Age.
