BioWare/EA need to be made aware of the true extent of the damage done by this to their customer base.

I truly do not believe I will buy anything from BioWare - if I do, I'll buy it used from someone who hasn't used the special codes. There are people who dont just so they can resell it down the line. Or I'll just wait for a mega steam sale so they make less money.

I feel like we need to all get people to do this. To write letters and petitions on this. This needs to be addressed. For too long we, as customers, have been kicked around and abused by these game companies. They are failing to realize that this can happen, that this can hurt their bottom line.

This is far beyond an apology now. This is about them making right what went wrong. For them to come here to these forums to apologies. For them to publicly announce it on the major gaming news sites and magazines. For them to offer a form of compensation for the last 4 days beyond that 20 dollar coupon some of us got.

Hi guys,

Here is somthing that hapnned just a few minuts ago.
Like everyone else I've beeen suffring from the DLC problam.
A few minuts ago I entered the game, and despite the fact the I have automated login box checked I got the loged out messege when the game lunched and the login screen.

I didn't log in to the server and was abel to play the game DLC includead depsite the fact that an haur ago they where all unuthorized and I couldn't use any of my saved gams.

I don't know if it's somthing EA/Bioware did, or a lucky glich in the system, but I wanted to let you guys know just in case it will help come up with a solution to the probalm.

wow... just caught up on 22 pages of forums, phew! Feel better knowing that the de-authoring thing wasn't just my game getting corrupted, but it sucks that it's caught so many people out- and that there's been no follow up response. Any idea if anyone on that long list of moderators at the end of the page actually watches the forum? - you think a quick update would be the polite thing to do about now.

and thanks to cookie for the (quietly) insane sleep deprived musings! Makes the waiting like a mushroom much easier

Does anyone know the answer to this question: What is the repeated online authentication trying to achieve, exactly?

I'm trying to figure out what I'm not understanding about how this whole thing is supposed to work ... It looks, at first sight, like you get the DLC, you authenticate online, and then that should be it, shouldn't it? I mean, if you have the same machine, same files, and everything is unchanged, it's not like your legitimate copy is going to suddenly *become* pirated, is it? [1]  What scenario is being prevented by having the system check online constantly to reauthenticate your purchases?

I'm serious about this. Is there something that is being prevented by this approach, or not? If so, is it worth the amount of pain and customer outrage it's causing?

[1] I'm indebted to Shamus Young for the notion of games becoming pirated:

And this is unacceptable.

Yeah, it was really shocking. :/

I was polite as I could be to the girl though, not her fault that the standard line is to assume the consumer is an idiot.

I really hope EA learns a lesson about invasive DRM from this mess.

Just sending more ASCII code to stuff up the forum with more inane male bovine scatterings.
At least they did a U-turn from their Ubisoft way of doing business and threw us a bone. Never mind that the bone is chained to EA's doghouse. I guess it's back to my Euripides book of quotes.

EA Download Manager just popped up a message that its servers are scheduled for maintanance today. Maybe that's somehow connected.

What if all EA servers were hacked? That'd explain why they were so silent and why they can't fix it so long.

Go to Joystiq (I would put up a link, but I'm an idiot when it comes to this sort of thing) and take a look on the right-hand side at their "Most Popular Posts in the Last 7 Days" section. Sony and their PSN was hacked about a week ago...I know this is not the same company, but I'm wondering if the Group reponsable has widened their attacks for some reason.

Personally, I think that is a bit unfair to the awesome work BioWare do.  I blame EA, not BioWare.  I DO agree that the silence and ignoring of this matter is unforgivable, but isn't it out of BioWare's hands?  EA have always been one of those companies I love to hate, just when I started to kind of like them for the games I have bought the last few years (Mirror's Edge, Dead Space, BioWare games etc, free PC Mass Effect 2 was nice too!), crap like this happens.  GET RID OF THE DRM EA!  It was only after I ordered Ultimate Edition from Amazon US last week,  that I read about the DLC needing an internet connection, which I don't always have.  By the time the servers are fixed, I probably wont be able to log in.  Thank God the PS3 version doesn't need me to sign into PSN to play it!

As a side note, I finally got around to playing Lair of the Shadow Broker on my 360 which I bought just before DA2 arrived and also purchased Arrival.  The game told me 2 of my previous downloads were currupt and needed to be downloaded again.  I'd love to know how they magically became currupt <_<

No i seriously doubt that, I can log into my account here at bioware just fine, somone hitting an obscure DLC authorization server is just too far fetched, it simply doesn't affect enough people.

Bioware/EA just needs to get their act together and communicate with the community, and do something. There have been problems with the authentication since day 1.

They know it's a serious weak spot and have done nothing to fix it since DA:O release. Them screwing us DA:O DLC customers simply hasn't got a big enough impact for them to care.

Come along Bioware/EA. Give us back our games... or at least give us a progress update? An ETA for the fix would most certainly calm a lot of folks down.

With all the DDoS attacks recently, I wouldn't be surprised if it had something to do with a hacker. Anonymous hit Sony and someone (in Russia?) hit LiveJournal hardcore last week. LJ's attack was the biggest in history. While I know some corporations need to listen to their fanbase more, hacking and shutting down servers is not the answer.

Again, not saying this is what's happened to BioWare, just some things I've been thinking about since LJ went down.
