This is so, so sad.
After talking to two agents on the EA chat support on Saturday (neither of them advised me of the server problem), I had re-installed the game. Since I had a digital copy, I had to download it again. At 27 Gig, that takes a LOT of time and bandwidth. The EA Download Manager didn't even save a copy of the installer (even though I set it up to do that) so I wouldn't have to download the whole thing again if need be.
Well after 18+ hours of downloading, the installation somehow screwed up. Interestingly, I was able to get into the game, but of course, DLC was unauthorized. I then checked to see if the DAupdater service was installed, which it wasn't. So I installed it and started the service. The next time I launched the game, I got an error: "awc.dll misconfiguration. Please reinstall and try again."
Reinstall??!! I just spent the last 18+ hours downloading it!!
I then submitted a ticket with EA support. That was 60+ hours ago and I have yet to receive ANY response, not even acknowledgment of receipt.
So now, because of:
a) a very poor DRM design

no forum announcement that the servers were down (this forum was the first place I checked after initially getting the problem Friday evening.)
c) poor customer support that could have prevented a lot of grief by simply saying "Sorry - the servers are down."
d) a corrupted installation by the EA DLM
e) no response from EA tech support
I wasted a good portion of my weekend troubleshooting and reinstalling a game that doesn’t even launch now.
So what are my options?
1) I can do nothing, and wait and hope that EA will a) fix the server problem in general and

resolve my problem in particular.
2) I can do the right thing by writing a lot of messages to EA and other forums in an effort to a) inform people about EA’s current poor DRM and customer service quality and

encourage EA to revisit its DRM technology. However, after all the time I’ve already spent on this fiasco, I really don’t feel like wasting any more energy on it.
3) Get a pirated version.
I’ve always bought games (many from EA) because I believe the developers’ efforts should be recognized and rewarded. But I honestly feel “pirated” by EA at this point. They have my money, I can’t even play a non-DLC version of DAO, and I have yet to hear from them.
So sad that their poor system to prevent piracy is encouraging their legitimate customers to see it as an option – if not the only one.
