I do tech support at an industrial ISP. We have customers that pay only $1/mo for their old grandfathered in accounts on servers that have been EOL'ed (end of lifed) for 8 years... and if ANY of us let one of those servers with a handful of people that pay almost nothing go more than 3-4 hours without a definitive fix, even if that meant porting their accounts to a new box and leaving them with their old accounts, We'd be out of a job.
Blizzard runs an MMO with hundreds to thousands of people on any given server at any given time and even in that sort of harried environment, a server is rarely down more than a day.
At this point, there is absolutely no excuse for the server to not be up and/or there be an "emergency patch" to alter the DRM to not require us to have to be logged in to get access to the content we paid them for.
Stick a fork in me...I'm done... I may only have one wallet, but I'm voting with it. Finis.

I rebooted my computer, and now the EA download manager (which is how I launch DAO) doesn't even show DAO in my list of installed games. In fact it claims that I suddenly have no games at all.
Funny, 5 minutes ago I had DAO Ultimate, ME2, and DA2.

Thanks for the reminder Silver, I posted the link earlier this afternoon.
Whoops! I was so excited that the issue was getting negative press on one of my RSS feeds, I didn't stop to check that it was 4 hours old.
Oh well, never hurts to bump, I guess.

I just picked up a copy of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
I've heard it's pretty good.
I love Oblivion and Morrowind. I've been playing Oblivion on and off since my first year of college. All my friends had pirated copies, I was the only one with the official version and I took pride in that. I also laughed at my friends because in their pirated versions they couldn't adjust the graphics settings, so they were running it at full capacity on these mediocre (now considered crappy) Dell laptops. They lag was hilarious to watch. Oblivion doesn't do DRM nonsense (at least I don't think it does). I've installed it many times on two different machines. I does, however, require the disc to play. Unfortunately I lost the disc, but I found I crack that lets me play without. I know this can be considered piracy, but in my case I'm not giving the disc to anyone else; I can't. If you want to support a good game and a good game company, encourage people to buy the games.
Oh, btw, look up mods for Oblivion. It's very mod-friendly. There are lists of top 10 mods online that should get you started. Look for one that fixes the broken leveling system, though. That's my only complaint about the game.

Hey Raen, I've seen this question asked in a coupla threads, but not sure I've seen it answered. Assume I was to start a new game (DLC disabled) and play that game until they address the issue. Once the DLC reauthorizes and I enable it, thatr file, in theory, should be fine, right? Not to minimize the ridiculousness of this situation, but it may give the more recent purchaser (myself, included) something to do in the meantime.
Yes, it should be fine. I posted something like in another thread (below) but your way of putting it is much more succinct.

As such, the access to the content is not guaranteed, and as it says in paragraph A1, subsection 3, EA can discontinue online service at their discretion...

Runemage; yeah, I noticed that on Friday when this started. I first thought my problem was because I was logged out when I have it set to automatically log in, and it wouldn't let me change that.

I am baffled.
I guess when a friend asks me some good RPG to play, I'll recommend him Oblivion (or Skyrim) and Witcher.
Speaking of Skyrim and Witcher. What will happen first: Witcher 2 OR a solution to the unauthorized issue?
Skyrim OR a solution to the unauthorized issue?
* Imagines a trailer with dramatic music, then something appears: PATCH FOR UNAUTHORIZED DLC ISSUE - 11 11 11. *

Thanks Jen. I had forgotten all about Oblivion! I guess it's about time to uninstall DA:O and start up Oblivion again. Shame, really. I prefer M Rated games (based on adult content and situations, not gore per se). ~shrugs~ I'm not a huge fan of MMO's anymore, but AoC is looking tastier and tastier about now, too. At least THEY don't keep people in the dark with downed servers for 5+ days with almost no word.
I used to play Guild Wars with my boyfriend, but then we broke up so.... Anyway, there was no loss on that because the game was a gift and there were no monthly fees. I might pick up GW2 when it's released, but I'll always go back to Oblivion.
While I liked Morrowind, it gets really confusing really fast. The GotY version I got didn't come packaged with the map that came with my then boyfriends Xbox version, so I stole it just to know where everything was, and I still got lost. The game essentially forced you to be a mage so you could fast-travel between mage's guilds without paying every time. Fast travel is nice in Oblivion, but the real reward comes from trekking around yourself and discovering all the ruins and buildings. Those just interested in the core story can fast travel around and ignore the rest of the game, while those who take the time to look into the world are rewarded. I like how that works in Oblivion. Shadowmere helps, too. My roommate used to call her, "All-Terrain Pony." xD
EDIT: Oh, and Oblivion's in-game map was actually useful, unlike Morrowind's. Forgot to mention that.

Well the good news is that if this fix the DRM Authorization servers thing doesn't pan out they may just discover efficient cold fusion.

All of this is EA's doing. Bioware is just a puppet studio for them, afterall. They would have demanded the DRM and the systems to go with it, so when said systems fail - it lands on Bioware to fix and manage the storm that comes with it.
