On Topic: Still on vigil.
Out of Topic: They should add Duncan as a SRI. (Short Term Romantic Interest).
But admittedly Alaistair and Leliana are the best.
*Edit*
For all this grievance I would settle for them to add a free DLC featuring a romance with one of the DarkSpawn, especially that one that has the ear to ear long grin.
*shudders*
You are one sick cookie, RedundantCookie. Darkspawn romance?

So now that this is fixed ... would someone mind terribly explaining to me (or directing me to a thread that will do so) how to fix the problem I caused with the 1 to 0 trick so that I can hopefully authorize my content and play the DLC? I don't even remember how I got in to change it in the first place ... would merely changing it back prompt the game to reauthorize them?
Have you tried launching the game yet and logging in? That *should* do it. Once it's all authorized, you can log out.

This should now be fixed - please login and retry.
It's not fixed! Try again, please. I love this game and would dearly like to play it again.
They are fixed, you could be experiencing what I am. Which is not having the Update service installed (Could have happened for me when I installed the Steam UE. Let me see if I can fix it and I'll let you know)
Re edited my xml file and logged in. YES, it's FIXED!!! no to see if the copy of my characters folder will enable me to continue playing my saved games with DLC content.
and yes, thank you RedundantCookie for all your help.

God I love my computer. Running Rift, Dragon Age and installing Baldur's Gate at the same time, and it's not even phased.
Just checked to see ... and no luck. I was having an authorization issue long before this server fiasco, so I had used the 'fix' where you go into the saved .txt file and change the 0s to 1s (or was it vice versa? I can't even remember now), without realizing that all that did was allow me to play the game--when I try to play the DLC it's severely glitched (i.e. unplayable.) I didn't try to fix it when I first realized the problem this morning because I knew if I did, I wouldn't be able to play at all because of the server.
But now that it's fixed I'd love to be able to play my DLC content. I wonder if I just need to go back in and change the 1s back to 0s, maybe that will prompt it to authorize? I just thought I'd see if anyone had any previous experience with this before I tried it, in case it ends up making my game explode or something.

There is a very simple solution to this problem: patch out the DRM. I'm guessing that won't be the course that Bio/EA takes, so this will happen again.
Bio/EA are not building my confidence in their future games, or the DLC sales model they seem so determined to push in lieu of actually putting proper development time into new games, or support of their older titles.
I really hope this recent patch of shoddy development and support is not indicative of the future for Bioware. I really love most of your games, but you've really begun to shake my confidence in your corporate direction.
Regardless, thanks for finally addressing the problem with the servers.

Thanks for your work here, man. Whenever I saw your posts I took time to read them. If EA weren't a big, evil, monstorous corporation that only exists to ruin childrens' dreams and shoot unicorns, I would say they should hire you. Wizards are always useful

My apologies once again for the delay in getting you information (and a solution) for this.
Why so long?
The short answer is that we were caught off-guard by this as a new issue for DAO players, believing initially that this was an existing issue that had a solution already available here on the tech forums.
Some of you may be familiar with it, but for those that were not, DAO has an existing (but low in numbers of affected players) issue with unauthorized DLC which can occur in certain cases - usually stemming from something related with the DA updater service that is either not correctly installed or not started with the game. You can find several help threads here on the site for how to detect this existing issue and fix it manually, as well as a link to a beta tool we've provided to help resolve this (see bottom of this post for links) - and there's been some great posts on this thread as well for how to get the service started or installed.
End of day friday when we received our daily Customer Service reports these did indicate players were seeing unauthorized DLC issues with DAO. However, the numbers were still very low (did not stand out) and the issue was reported nearly identically to the known existing issue normally addressed via CS reps or forums, and as such we provided the same fix information back to CS.
In addition, as there had not been any server side changes made by us on our DAO servers, there were no server or app failures in the pipeline, nor any recent DAO patches that could introduce new client side issues - there was no reason to believe that a new issue had appeared, or that this was anything other than the same existing issue.
It wasn't until sunday's CS report that the numbers of DAO players reporting the unauthorized DLC issue really began to stand out. Although at this point we still believed this was the existing issue, it looked like something was causing a spike in numbers and we did start to investigate a reason for the spike. Our QA was also informed and a request for a sweep of the DAO systems was asked to be made as soon as possible. Given that this was still just investigative at this point, the request was queued up behind the DA2 PC/Mac patch work they were still going through over the weekend.
Normally, we are pretty responsive to activity on the forums, but you may also be aware that our forums are staffed voluntarily - and while we do ensure that additional presence exists when launching patches or server updates, this weekend was not the case. The DA2 patch was not expected to clear QA until at least Monday, and most of the volunteer staff/moderators were focused on the DA2 threads currently. The higher than normal traffic in the DAO support thread was not caught.
During monday, as part of catching up to forums, our own game validation checks, and QA passes is when everything came together. We were able to confirm that there was indeed a new issue somewhere in the pipeline, and this is when Rob began to post on the forums.
The delay and vagueness in information provided to you came from the fact that the issue ended up residing in servers outside our direct control elsewhere at EA - and across timezones it took us a while (most of Mon and into early Tues) to go back and forth trying out different approaches to identify exactly what was causing the issue.
Today (tues) was spent actually tackling this issue. Initial fixes did not work, and only recently this evening do we believe that this new issue has been resolved.
Once again my sincere apologies on the delay and the frustration factor for everyone wanting to play the game and DLCs over this weekend.
Why do I need to be logged in to play DLC or the game?
You don't - or are not supposed to need to be logged in. The system was designed such that after the first authorization you should be able to play offline, and it does do this for the overwhelming majority of players (based on data we see). As mentioned above however, there is a known issue which affects a very low number of players, and can be addressed either manually or with a beta tool we've provided (see below). But otherwise you should not need to login/re-authorize.
While the numbers are still low and manual/separate app fixes exist, there is also a patch for DAO that we had been working on to address this which was temporarily put on hold during the finaling period of DA2, and had already resumed since DA2's launch. We'll be looking into accelerating this now - however, at this point I don't have a timeframe I can offer yet.
Why am I still seeing issues?
Now that this new issue is resolved, if you still encounter issues with DLC authorization this is now 99% likely due to the previous known issue with the DA Updater service. Below are some links for solutions, including the beta tool I mentioned above.

Please continue to post on those threads if you experience issues after attempting the fixes recommended there.

What benefits do u get from playing as "online" in the game?
(I know there might be another better suited place for asking this, but I'm going with a train soon, so I don't really have time to look it up atm, thus relying on you guys!)
Thanks for your help!

Just wondering now... I saw somwehere on the forum one person saying that efter he got his DLC's authorized again, he would instantly logg offline in the game and never logg online again.

The only "benefits" of playing logged in is that your BioWare DAO profile gets updated regularly. Nothing more. They didn't even bother to install something that looks for and updates patches, you have to do that yourself. Better have that Google searchbar ready!

This is exactly the kind of information that we'd all been looking for. Thank you for taking the time to fill us all in on exactly what happened. As someone (RaenImrahl) mentioned earlier this was something of a Perfect Storm for
Bioware.
I think this post will go some way to making players feel a bit better about this whole thing, although it was still very unpleasant to go through.

1. You can log in occasionally to sync up.
2. You can stay logged in, but keep a backup of the files that contain your authorizations.
These are found in the My Documents\\Bioware\\Dragon Age\\Settings folder. The primary file
is Profiles.dap but it wouldn't hurt to keep an emergency backup of AddIns.xml Manifest.xml and Offers.xml.
