Just got back from work, DLC still a no-go while logged in. I'm one of the lucky few who's already registered the DLC and can play offline, but I still can't install the patch because it tells me to register, and then when I enter my code it tells me to reinstall. I'll continue to play offline, but this is far from a fix for Ferelden (how was that for alliteration?). Fix it for everyone, get a patch that makes this not happen, and let us play the game.

I think you need to register game in this social network. I can only see ME2 registered to your account?

It worked before I registerd it. It's worked for months. Now that I've bothered to register it, it still doesn't work. If registering the game was a problem, then I wouldn't be able to play the main storyline. It's the DLC that's acting up. So it's not that. It's server-side over at EA.

You've got a point there. Sorry can't be of more help. The only error I got for UE was unauthorized error which was fixed by daupdater service I saw in wikia, and this outage recently.

Thank you, Fernando.
Your detailed post explained a lot, which is really what a lot of us have been looking for.
I really appreciate the fact that you seemed to lay it all out honestly, even the really ugly stuff that makes Bioware and EA look a little less polished. Personally, I think this is still primarily an EA issue and I think they're killing Bioware slowly, but I'm realistic enough to realize that Bioware is not in a position to "demand" things from EA the way a lot of folks seem to want them to.
I want to add to the chorus of Thanks & Kudos going out to Raen and Cookie and Padme and everyone who tried to help and bring a bit of humor to the "Lifeboat"... it all went a long way to easing the tension of the situation...without you guys I might have actually left my house!
I think we should book a Hall now for a Reunion in 20 years.

Just wanted to add my thanks for the fix and updates.  And joking apart, Bioware please consider some way to thank RaenImrahl - he's done stirling work holding the fort for you.  Thanks Raen and friends for all your help on the forum, it really was exceptional and much appreciated.

Guys, I'm just online now and checking here to see if the issue is fixed (looks as though it is but I can't find the official post from Bioware stating this). I'm in the office now so can't test out the actual game, but can anyone fill me in with the details?

EDIT: Ah it's ok.. i found it on the very first post lol. Hopefully it will work. need to try when I get home.

It works fine. Once I logged in and checked my DLC, all´the DLC I had bought (prior to the "unauthorized"-problem and me re-installing the game) started to download and install properly.  I can even see my remaining bioware points.
I think I will play offline in the future though, to avoid another 5 day not-being-able-to-play time period.

Still can't install patch 1.04. It gives me a screen that tells me there's something wrong with my instalation. This has happened twice. Both times it was after I installed patch 1.04. I'd love to install the DA Content Update Manager, but that comes with the patch, and I can't patch the game, so I can't fix this DLC bull****. I put a quiery into EA on Sunday (Japan time, Saturday North America time) and they just got back to me, acting like it was the DLC problem and not actually reading my query.

I think I need to get some of these tech support guys into my HS Reading class, teach them some English.

I found something out, now if your logged off the servers your DLC is unathouriserd again so RIs advice seems of never logging in again seems to not work and more.

Hi everyone,

My apologies once again for the delay in getting you information (and a solution) for this.

Why so long?

The short answer is that we were caught off-guard by this as a new issue for DAO players, believing initially that this was an existing issue that had a solution already available here on the tech forums.

Some of you may be familiar with it, but for those that were not, DAO has an existing (but low in numbers of affected players) issue with unauthorized DLC which can occur in certain cases - usually stemming from something related with the DA updater service that is either not correctly installed or not started with the game.  You can find several help threads here on the site for how to detect this existing issue and fix it manually, as well as a link to a beta tool we've provided to help resolve this (see bottom of this post for links)  - and there's been some great posts on this thread as well for how to get the service started or installed.

End of day friday when we received our daily Customer Service reports these did indicate players were seeing unauthorized DLC issues with DAO.   However, the numbers were still very low (did not stand out) and the issue was reported nearly identically to the known existing issue normally addressed via CS reps or forums, and as such we provided the same fix information back to CS.

In addition, as there had not been any server side changes made by us on our DAO servers, there were no server or app failures in the pipeline, nor any recent DAO patches that could introduce new client side issues - there was no reason to believe that a new issue had appeared, or that this was anything other than the same existing issue.

It wasn't until sunday's CS report that the numbers of DAO players reporting the unauthorized DLC issue really began to stand out.  Although at this point we still believed this was the existing issue, it looked like something was causing a spike in numbers and we did start to investigate a reason for the spike.  Our QA was also informed and a request for a sweep of the DAO systems was asked to be made as soon as possible.  Given that this was still just investigative at this point, the request was queued up behind the DA2 PC/Mac patch work they were still going through over the weekend.

Normally, we are pretty responsive to activity on the forums, but you may also be aware that our forums are staffed voluntarily - and while we do ensure that additional presence exists when launching patches or server updates, this weekend was not the case.  The DA2 patch was not expected to clear QA until at least Monday, and most of the volunteer staff/moderators were focused on the DA2 threads currently.  The higher than normal traffic in the DAO support thread was not caught.

During monday, as part of catching up to forums, our own game validation checks, and QA passes is when everything came together.  We were able to confirm that there was indeed a new issue somewhere in the pipeline, and this is when Rob began to post on the forums.

The delay and vagueness in information provided to you came from the fact that the issue ended up residing in servers outside our direct control elsewhere at EA -  and across timezones it took us a while (most of Mon and into early Tues) to go back and forth trying out different approaches to identify exactly what was causing the issue.

Today (tues) was spent actually tackling this issue.  Initial fixes did not work, and only recently this evening do we believe that this new issue has been resolved.

Once again my sincere apologies on the delay and the frustration factor for everyone wanting to play the game and DLCs over this weekend.

Why do I need to be logged in to play DLC or the game?

You don't - or are not supposed to need to be logged in.   The system was designed such that after the first authorization you should be able to play offline, and it does do this for the overwhelming majority of players (based on data we see).  As mentioned above however, there is a known issue which affects a very low number of players, and can be addressed either manually or with a beta tool we've provided (see below).  But otherwise you should not need to login/re-authorize.

While the numbers are still low and manual/separate app fixes exist, there is also a patch for DAO that we had been working on to address this which was temporarily put on hold during the finaling period of DA2, and had already resumed since DA2's launch.  We'll be looking into accelerating this now -  however, at this point I don't have a timeframe I can offer yet.

Why am I still seeing issues?

Now that this new issue is resolved, if you still encounter issues with DLC authorization this is now 99% likely due to the previous known issue with the DA Updater service.  Below are some links for solutions, including the beta tool I mentioned above.

Please continue to post on those threads if you experience issues after attempting the fixes recommended there.

F.

Thanks for the information. I also appreciate that you're upping the priority of the DA:O dlc patch. :)

I don't mean to sound patronising, but I would like to also add that, this situation goes to show that once a sequel of a game comes out, the original game(s) in the series tend to have a resurgence of popularity along side it, and as such, a keen eye should be kept on the associated franchise, in all forms (such as DA:O forums, etc). :)

Anyway, thanks for the help, and I can understand that with such a huge company, with various departments worldwide, it can be difficult to communicate and address some issues effectively, especially when there are essentially two different companies responsible for, but ultimately involved in very different aspects of the product in question (in this case, you guys and EA).

See you around,

M. ^_^

I waited a bit before giving my Saved Game a try and I can now confirm that I am no longer experiencing any problems with DLC items or Titles.
Everyone is properly dressed and outfited and I even gave "Golems" a quick try just to see and it loaded flawlessly.
Now, I have to say that I have a disc copy of the Game and I applied none of the workarounds, so I'm not sure what others may encounter...but the immediate problem does seem to be fixed.
I think that we as players need to look at this as a "teachable moment" (Gods! Kill me now...I just employed an over-used Buzz Term) I think we need to realize that, as much as we want to get to play trying what sounds like a radical solution (i.e. un-install/re-install) should be done as a LAST resort instead of following customer support and trying it as a first step. (This is true of all companies "support", not just Ea's)

While I'm certainly happy a solution has been found.... I'm a little confused by the explanation. It says that it wasn't until Sunday that you became aware that this was something new... something for which there wasnt already a fix posted. However, on Friday I (and many other people) were told by tech support that this was a known server problem and that engineers were working on it... they even went so far to issue credits to future purchases. So who told tech support that this was a server issue on Friday?

Indeed!
I was told so by support on saturday. Someone is lying here, not a really good way to get past this huge mess. Being lazy in fixing the problem is one thing, but at least try to be honest (or find a lie that you can't so easily be caught on).

I do appreciate the fix, although blaming it on the "oh we thought it was the same old problem with our game that has existed since release" was not helpful. The real question is, why have you allowed this known problem to exist AT ALL in any form since RELEASE!? That is by far the most lazy and incompetent excuse I have ever heard. Here's an idea, "Just FIX it once and for all". While you are at it, fix the loading times issue that has also been there since release.

And contrary to your statement, "it is just a small percentage of people, and it just happens every so often, and was so beneath our notice that we let forum people fix it..." It is a problem that tons of people have, and have had since release. It is not isolated, it is not a small number. You just relied on "customer fixes". until it broke beyond our ability to fix. Had we been able to fix it amongst ourselves, you still would not even be addressing this, ever.

This is unacceptable. I have followed this company, and it's many branches since Interplay. I own almost every title that has been put out since the Interplay/Black Isle days. I will say that customer service has taken a hit since then, and it is getting worse. Take care of your loyal customers bioware. You don't want to end up like Funcom....do you?

Fernando, thank you for explanation and apologies. Accepted. Congratulation on fixing the server issue. Logged in and working flawlessly.

And please someone tell customer support that uninstalling and re-installing is NOT the universal solution to everything!

RaenImrahl, thank you again and again for technical and moral support to the community when everything looked drab and chaotic. Your threads and posts have kept many gamers from eating (or re-formatting) their harddisks, needlessly re-installing the game, and jumping out of the basement window in desperation.

For some lighter mood, I re-post my conversation I had on Sunday with ELIZA, the AI psychologist program, about the DLC problem. Reminded me of some conversations with tech support people posted. For those who have already seen it, apologies.

>> Hello.
How do you do. Please state your problem.
>> my dlc has suddenly stopped working.
Your dlc has suddenly stopped working?
>> yes.
You seem to be quite positive.
>> no, i'm not!
Are you saying no just to be negative?
>> What?
Why do you ask ?
>> Ok, let's get back on topic: I can't play Dragon Age any more.
How do you think that you can't play dragon age any more?
>> No, I mean, I can, but it won't let me play.
You are being a bit negative.
>> That's right.
Does that have anything to do with the fact that your dlc has suddenly stopped working?

Here I lost it.

^ Same problem here too. First it was just the unauthorized DLC. Tried contacting support, and they said it's a server problem. But now the background service won't start. On trying to manually start it it says Error 5. Access Denied. Even in the Services.msc it says the same thing, with all the options like, Start, Stop or pause greyed out. Any advice?

Check that you are running an Administrator account. The issue here seems to be with the updater service.

*IMPORTANT READ* I saw some of you using the Steam version who still have the problem of having the DLC unauthorized, like I did shortly after the "Fix". This is most likely having to do with the daupdater service not being installed as a service. Please follow these steps below and you should be able to enjoy your game soon.

Jason Leong wrote...

We have a preview application that contains a number of the DA Updater fixes for the upcoming PC Patch.<br />
You can try it out and see if it helps solve your problems in the meanwhile.<br />
If you do, please let me know if it helps.<br />
http://supportfiles....tic_beta.exe<br />
<br />
<br />
Also, you'll want to confirm your service starts when you boot the game. A few users have reported they need to manually start their service for some reason.<br />
1. In Windows, Press start<br />
2. Run "services.msc"<br />
3. Find and start "Dragon Age: Origins - Content Updater"<br />
4. Restart game<br />

There you go.

Hello and thanks to all that have been keeping everyone up to date during this mess. When the servers went down I made the change in one of the files someone had suggested, I think it was changing all the 0's to 1's. And I was able to play after this but all my dlc items were gone.

Now that the servers are fixed I loaded my latest saved game and it looks like I am still missing some of the items. I honesly would like just like clear out all this stuff but keep my saves, deleting all the ones I did after the servers went down and just reinstall the game fresh. If I uninstall the game will it leave the saves or do you have to put them in a different location before you do that?

Deanorn, supposing you have Windows, go to:

Documents > BioWare > Dragon Age and backup the folder "Characters", it contains information of each of your characters including the Save Files. Just replace it or add it once you reinstall and voila.
