I am running an Administrator account in Win XP. Yet the Updater refuses to start. I even downloaded the diagnostic tool and it says the Updater is not installed. The strange thing is, everytime I try to manually install, it says access denied.

If you were trying to start the updater from it's folder, it's likely it would refuse and says you need some sort of program to run it. So have you tried what Jason mentioned earlier, it helped when I had the problem.

We have a preview application that contains a number of the DA Updater fixes for the upcoming PC Patch.<br />
You can try it out and see if it helps solve your problems in the meanwhile.<br />
If you do, please let me know if it helps.<br />

<br />
<br />
Also,
you'll want to confirm your service starts when you boot the game. A
few users have reported they need to manually start their service for
some reason.<br />
1. In Windows, Press start<br />
2. Run "services.msc"<br />
3. Find and start "Dragon Age: Origins - Content Updater"<br />
4. Restart game<br />

There you go.[/quote]

same, installing only results into: already installed, performing rollback or whatever. access denied on net starting the service, blablabla, gonna reinstall my windows since its a mess anyway, only booting my pc results in a screen full of errors, not that i notice anything after clicking them away but oh well.

a clean install never hurts

oh yeah and the ea support really was a mess, im not complaining fast but....
1. i get a dude, asks me what ive tried and repeats that as possible solutions...

2. i get a 15$ discount coupon from EA, coupon doesnt work, then im told its a 15% off coupon and i should buy a game and let them know so they can refund 15% of the price, no way im gonna do that...

Deanorn, supposing you have Windows, go to:

Documents > BioWare > Dragon Age and backup the folder "Characters", it contains information of each of your characters including the Save Files. Just replace it or add it once you reinstall and voila.

Easy enough, Thanks

Frostbite Lancer, by manual I meant through the command line, using the "net start" command. And the diagnostic log says that it isn't installed, and it fails to install it everytime it tries to install it.

dread375, yeah...maybe I have to go the same way too. It's like the Updater service is stuck refusing to be uninstalled or letting anything else take it place.

I was just coming to forums to post about not being able to play DAO and that maybe my account was corrupt or something since I didn't see any mention of the problem early on. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out where the issue was. DA2 worked, ME2 worked, so I was lead to believe it was somehow on my end. I checked hard drives for damage, router logs, and I even considered reinstalling the game. I am dumbfounded that a simple post acknowledging the problem wasn't even attempted.

I'm sorry, but Bioware/EA has really been on a down-slide as of late. DA2 was a huge disappointment and the following customer service and DRM issues have really frustrated me and I find that any loyalty that was built up has been quickly drained. It is pretty apparent that I will not be able to play DAO years on down the line due to DRM, even though I paid a premium for the game. It will be the same with the other titles. I just can't support that business model. I refuse to go through the frustrations, hassles, and the feeling that big brother is watching my every move and can take away my ability to use the product I paid for at any moment for any reason or that their "anti-piracy" measures break my legal right to use the product and I have no recourse.

I'm going to restate my much earlier post in the hope that with added media attention comes someone reading the forums.
Saturday night I was told by a service rep that it was a known issue, after she tried to send me down reinstalling and several other time-wasting paths. Either the Rep was lying or EA was aware of this Saturday night.
Between the tech support trying to send me on disrespectful wild goose chase wastes of time, the length of the downtime, and the lack of adequate communication from EA/Bioware; I'm really annoyed. Probably a good object lesson on how NOT to handle an issue correctly from a corporate perspective.
Thank you for explaining the series of events, but at the end of the day, we users do not care.
What we care about was a problem happened on Friday, support was non-existent until late Monday, and it wasn't fixed for a total of about 5 days. Meanwhile, the non-functioning product was continuing to be sold, leading to every purchaser of the ultimate edition being unable to authorize content they paid for. Time zone issues, separate departments, all that is very interesting from a "How the sausage is made perspective" but we don't actually care about your issues. the company should design a better internal system if it takes that long to fix a problem like this.

How's this for some reasonable support rules for products.

1) If it isn't working for more then a few hours, or at least a day, stop selling it.
2) Keep your support staff informed.
3) Be respectful of your customer's time
4) Monitor the official communication channels and be responsive.
5) When you design a program to dial in to a server, provide a mechanism to display a message to users in the event of a problem so they know what is wrong. Again, respect customer's time.
6) Down time always equals urgent. Weekends and nights are not time off for a game, if you are selling a game add resources if necessary.

While I'm certainly happy a solution has been found.... I'm a little confused by the explanation. It says that it wasn't until Sunday that you became aware that this was something new... something for which there wasnt already a fix posted. However, on Friday I (and many other people) were told by tech support that this was a known server problem and that engineers were working on it... they even went so far to issue credits to future purchases. So who told tech support that this was a server issue on Friday?

Indeed!
I was told so by support on saturday. Someone is lying here, not a really good way to get past this huge mess. Being lazy in fixing the problem is one thing, but at least try to be honest (or find a lie that you can't so easily be caught on).

I was of the understanding that the customer service/tech support guys in question were representatives of EA.
From what I've heard anyway. I think that's where the true problem lay, in regards to the delay of the issue being properly acknowledged by Bioware themselves.
Still, as I previously pointed out, on the other hand, if the forums had been monitored more closely, we would have a quicker response, by such means, just as well ...

Anyway, past is past, and I think the point here should be about learning from it. Hopefully (*nudge, nudge* ;)), the level of service will improve now, as a result of all this.

Hope everyone is playing/having fun again,

see ya around,
M.

Sorry but i will not forget and i will not forgive. Why, because i dont believe you. I think you were aware of the issue from the beginning but you chose to ignore most probably because all your resources were tied up with DA:2. But again, your biggest mistake is to ignore all these authorization issues for a long time. Now you are saying you had a patch you were working on since DA2. Lol, even a kid would not believe this. you probably, now will start some kind of a fix, but sorry Bioware you failed.

Pro tip for Bioware:  Unlink my SINGLE PLAYER game from your server authorization.  I am an adult and as such have very little free time, when I do have that time I don't want to have a $60 purchase fail to work all weekend long.  To have single player only games linked to authorization servers is ridiculous.

Sorry, but that doesn't pass the smell test.  Either this is not the whole story, or tech support has been giving out false information.

Guys....it's a game. Relax if you can't play for a few hours, or even a few days. It's ok, you'll live. Go get some sun or something for a change.

Harbinger, I am a wife, mother, student, and worker. Between family obligations, working, and going to school full-time, I have about five hours of free time a week. If I am spending most of that time trying to get a game I paid for to work when there is a known issue that cannot be solved on my end, I am going to be angry. Other people are like me; we do not have free time to waste on problems that we cannot fix. If our anger upsets you, press the back button. Instead of griping at us for legitimate complaints, why don't you follow your own advice and get some sun for a while?

When Ubisoft had this with Assassin's Creed, as an apology, they gave away some of their games to the disgruntled customers...

So
please send me a DA: Origins code so I can give it away to some budies
in my WoW guild. Thx. (not requesting anything for me, since I already
have all of the Bioware games).

It's not being unable to play the game that I have a problem with.  It's the lack of communication with, and respect for, the customer.

Many of us who contacted tech support (starting Friday) were told the problem was with our machines and given a laundry list of steps to perform to get things working.  When that failed to resolved the issue, some were told there was an issue with the servers.  Days after that, something official was finally posted.

The cyncial part of me notes that it wasn't until the issue started getting picked up on gaming and tech websites that it was finally resolved.

My problem cropped up on Friday. I spent some quality time talking with EA support...and the result was that they acknowledged to me this was a problem with the last server update. In the three conversations I had with support I finally suggested to them that if they planned to run an MMO that their procedures to fix a major update problem had to be more urgent than the leisurely pace the developers addressed this problem with. At no time did I raise my voice to anyone.

The problem is this. The developers never hear these conversations and support reps are unable to communicate directly with the developers. This business model will NOT work when SW: The Old Republic comes online.

I am extremely disappointed with the lack of urgency that was demonstrated by the developers. The support people are not to blame here, I received the best answers I could considering how the devs were not communicating with support.

My disappointment may be expressed in the future by my dollars going somewhere else. I am now going to see if this fix is in place.

I have a better idea. How about we don't continue buying Bioware games that treat us paying customers like criminals. It's why I didn't buy DA2, and won't be buying ME3 unless they announce that it has none of this DRM nonsense in it. Enough is enough.

Sigh... it gets fixed the day after my laptop dies. I guess I'll install it on the kids' desktop and never ever ever let them on it again!

I was just getting ready to go to bed last night, when I decided to take one last look at the forums and saw people yelling that it was up and fixed. With great trepidation, I launched DA:O and went to my saved game... My gear was back. I tried to start a Witch Hunt game...it launched. I tried to launch a Golems campaign...it launched.

Satisfied that those were working, I checked my Download Options page and saw every bit of content was authorized. I logged out of my account, then rechecked everything, following the same procedures again. I then shut down the game, relaunched it, and tried one more time, without logging in. All of it still there and authorized.

I then shut off the computer and nestled in for a good night's sleep.

If I come home today and find that, even though I never logged back in, I suddenly can't get my DLC stuff to work, I will proceed to uninstall the game and stay far from BioWare AND EA. There's great games by great design houses out there that aren't under the dictatorial rule of that megalith of oppression disguised as a gaming distributor.

I'm still keeping my pocketbook tightly closed until I see a removal of the current DRM system from this game... Then it'll be up to the BioWare folks to decide if they care enough about one old lady to convince her that they are worth her trust again.

I purchased the UE from Impulse about 3 weeks ago... I only tried the one trick of replacing the 1's with 0's in the xml. All that had done for me was to let me see the content listed. It never gave me access to it, though. Previously, it had refused me access to the DLC unless I was logged in, so whatever happened last night seems to have fixed that particular issue.

Here's to hoping that this sort of thing is never again attempted in a game as fun as DA:O...it sucks the life and enjoyment out of it.

...now to try the Sappho's Daughters mod! (why yes...I do lean that direction... :P)
