Oh, I have an idea. Maybe they could like... Have the server return an error message about it being down so people don't have to waste time trying to reinstall their games and try looking for fixes.

An excellent idea, also make it so the server sends a message to the techs when a service crashes. Would solve a lot of 'time spent looking for fixes' issues.

But hey thats my opinion, feel free to add to it.

I would like to say Thank You to Rob for finally making an Official Announcement about the problem.
Now that that announcement has been made, let's not rant at the person who made it.
The DLC situation is far from ideal, but as far as I know this DRM method has already been abandoned.
But a patch or some other solution is best left for a Thread of it's own. We have plenty of Threads available to continue venting on, so let's use those.
As I see it, the server being down is an EA problem so let's not try to punish Bioware for it.

I pruchased some DLC last night and wasted hours with fixes trying to get it to work. Then un-installed with a view to re-installing. I then stumbled upon these forums with others posting of similar woe.

I then had the further joy of getting another known error with my dvd no longer wanting to install with some error about missing files.

I then had to re-download the entire game from EA's download manager - probably putting me over my useage allowance for my broadband this month incurring more charges.

Firstly - Why can I pay and download software that is unavailable.

Secondly - As you say a simple error message would have prevented all this time i wasted.

Not a happy customer.

Thank you Rob and Bioware for finally publicly acknowledging the problem.

Completely separate from the issue of whether or not single-player games should require authentication at all (beyond even the first time), is the issue of timely notification. Had Rob posted that on the 8th, when I first encountered the issue, I might have been able to save myself a few hours of troubleshooting and frustration.

If you (Bioware/EA) require your customers to authenticate with a server in order to play a game, and that server goes does for any significant amount of time, you are obligated to post some kind notification. That it took 4 days is completely unacceptable.

That would be too easy.
And also someone in the development team would have had to spent 1 more sec thinking about the update service.

I am also concerned about buying EA games in the future. I can always Pirate or wait for Steam to have an unbelievable sale.

Mistakes happen. Servers and programs can go awry. However there is absolutely no excuse in the world for a game company, especially one as large and with deep pockets as EA, for them to NOT have someone on the ball for one of their now more popular franchises.

Doesn't matter how good the game is, if you can't play it why would you try another game from the company?

If they want people to respect them then they need to show some respect to the buying public as well.

Three days? The least you could have done is properly inform your Support about the problem; instead I wasted my time and then they suggested more ways I can waste my time. Companies should respect the time of their customers. This lack of support for a game currently selling is quite appaling. This is from Saturday night, almost two days after the start of the problem.

Image IPB Lisa: Hi, my name is Lisa. How may I help you?
Image IPB Jeffrey Martin: Hello
Image IPB Jeffrey Martin: Dragon age ultimate is not showing any dlc content
Image IPB Jeffrey Martin: Are the servers down? I've already tried reinstalling
Image IPB Lisa: Which dlc ?
Image IPB Jeffrey Martin: All of them read unauthorized
Image IPB Jeffrey Martin: but show on my social.bioware page fine
Image IPB Jeffrey Martin: and worked fine until friday
Image IPB Lisa: Please click on the following link

Anyone remember ELIZA? That was an early and very simple AI program that emulated a psychologist and engaged you in therapy conversations. (While waiting for DA servers to resume their business, you can play around with it at this address.)

The tech support conversation that carabes posted reminds me a lot of it.

Actually, I tried telling ELIZA about the DLC problem. Here are the results:
>> Hello.
How do you do.  Please state your problem.
>> my dlc has suddenly stopped working.
Your dlc has suddenly stopped working  ?
>> yes.
You seem to be quite positive.
>> no, i'm not!
Are you saying no just to be negative?
>> What?
Why do you ask ?
>> Ok, let's get back on topic: I can't play Dragon Age any more.
How do you think that you can't play dragon age any more?
>> No, I mean, I can, but it won't let me play.
You are being a bit negative.
>> That's right.
Does that have anything to do with the fact that your dlc has suddenly stopped working?

Here I lost it.

Ok, I'm now seeing Phone Support as the first option in the Contact Us method dealing with tech support? Live Chat is the second option. Has anybody else encountered this before this weekend?

Encountered what exactly.  This problem or the availability of phone support?

Well, if EA owns Bioware, then it's one and the same. If they do not, if it's just an agreement between the two companies, then yes, let us punish Bioware for making a bad decision.

Is anyone else as entertained as I am when I see people spout off about how atrocious EA's customer service is and how they'll never buy another EA/BioWare game ever again?

Never again....

...really?

You'll never buy another title from one of the world's largest videogame publishers, who have their hand in many different markets?
You'll never buy a game from one of it's myriad of subsidiary studios that produce outstanding games?
You'll never buy from a studio that is one of the most established bastions of storytelling in games to date?
You'll turn down Mass Effect 3 after having played the first two because of your moral righteousness?

Frankly, I don't believe you.

I'm glad they seem to be on the case to solve (hopefully for good) the problems with DLC authorization. But demanding that ANYONE conform to your own gaming convenience is an exercise in futility. I paid for the full DA:O Ultimate as well as the regular copy of the game when it first came out. Could I be angry and irrate? Sure. Would it accomplish anything? Probably not. Now I'm gonna go mess around with some mods in the meantime and play something else for a bit.

Nope. Not amused at all.  And your non-belief is meaningless.

I stopped buying EA years ago for reasons such as this.  The ony reason I bought this game was I didn't realize BioWare sold to EA or I wouldn't hve purchased it.

Just be aware ... smugness only enhances the perception of your ignorance.  Now THAT amuses me.

I just received this error about 30 minutes ago when I noticed that I was “logged out”, so  I “logged in” and then my DLC wouldn’t work.

I then “logged out” and my DLC works again.

It looks similar to the EA download manager bug, where if you have it log in automatically, your games don’t show up - They fixed this recently.

And yet you still stalk a forum for a game whose company you no longer believe in or buy from....

Well, seeing as how Bioware games are the only EA games I own or have owned, I don't see how it's that bad. And moral righteousness? That's far too high a term to apply here; it's mere frustration, and a refusal to deal with this kind of nonsense. And it's not futile to complain about poor service, or there wouldn't exist such a thing as a customer service department. Furthermore, this has nothing to do with gaming convenience, it's about basic customer service, as would apply to any company in any industry. And since Bioware is NOT that great at storytelling, focusing more on "choice" than plot, I'm not too worried about missing anything mind-blowing. If you are done calling us liars, please do go play around with something else.

You know what the worst part about of all of this is?

I'm sure pirates were having no problems playing this weekend.

Congrats, EA. Your DRM officially is harder on legitimate consumers than it is on pirates.

Following this issue on the forums reminds me of the five stages of grief. Many of us went through those stages over the weekend; Denial, Anger (lots of that), Bargaining (some), Depression, and finally Acceptance. It's out of our hands, so don't let it get to you.

As to why you are seeing an option for phone support - that's usually available during business hours.
