I won't buy any drm game ever again. I had no idea dragon age had an online drm for their DLC content when I purchased it. If I had, I wouldn't have bought it. Assassins creed is also an "excellent" game and features one of my favorite hotties Veronica Mars' own geek goddess Kirsten Bell. But I will never buy that game either because of the draconian DRM.

This is coming from a bonafide gaming addict. Two iterations of the game have come out and I have somehow magically resisted the urge to be irked into madness by an onerous persistent connection requirement. Go figure...

Is anyone else as entertained as I am when I see people spout off about how atrocious EA's customer service is and how they'll never buy another EA/BioWare game ever again?

Never again....

...really?

You'll never buy another title from one of the world's largest videogame publishers, who have their hand in many different markets?
You'll never buy a game from one of it's myriad of subsidiary studios that produce outstanding games?
You'll never buy from a studio that is one of the most established bastions of storytelling in games to date?
You'll turn down Mass Effect 3 after having played the first two because of your moral righteousness?

Frankly, I don't believe you.

I'm glad they seem to be on the case to solve (hopefully for good) the problems with DLC authorization. But demanding that ANYONE conform to your own gaming convenience is an exercise in futility. I paid for the full DA:O Ultimate as well as the regular copy of the game when it first came out. Could I be angry and irrate? Sure. Would it accomplish anything? Probably not. Now I'm gonna go mess around with some mods in the meantime and play something else for a bit.

Well, seeing as how Bioware games are the only EA games I own or have owned, I don't see how it's that bad. And moral righteousness? That's far too high a term to apply here; it's mere frustration, and a refusal to deal with this kind of nonsense. And it's not futile to complain about poor service, or there wouldn't exist such a thing as a customer service department. Furthermore, this has nothing to do with gaming convenience, it's about basic customer service, as would apply to any company in any industry. And since Bioware is NOT that great at storytelling, focusing more on "choice" than plot, I'm not too worried about missing anything mind-blowing. If you are done calling us liars, please do go play around with something else.

*Shrug*

True, "righteousness" is probably too strong a word. And believe me, I think letting a company know when they have shot themselves in the foot is a noble goal, but I just think the grand claims seem a little hollow. Perhaps the community here is more inclined to stick to their guns, but in the gamer demographic, my observation has been that hiccups like these are forgotten in the quest for the next great gaming experience....though my hope is that the various game makers are paying attention when they happen.

Goodling; well, obviously alot of people will forget it, and honestly, not too many people are affected by it. But it's little problems adding up, as much as big ones, that ends up screwing over companies who rest on their laurels. If every time this kind of stuff happens, 100 people refuse to buy their products for 10 years, that's tens of thousands of dollars they threw out the window at a time. Alot of people will stick to their guns, and some won't, but the outrage is really what matters here.

ReaperCH90; no, we...we can never go back! Don't you see?!

Once you can authenticate your DLC it will be just like before ... until the servers go down again or Bioware patches the game to not require re-authentication.

You can protect yourself in the future by keeping a copy of your Profile.dap file (once everything is authenticated). If the servers DO go down again, you can log out and use this backup Profile and everything will continue to be authorized.

thx for the information

@ BWMagus: Maybe you're right, but why is nobody thinking about the children?

I always feel like DRM schemes and the nonsense that follows are never publicized to the extent that they should be. When it comes to learning from mistakes, I'm not sure there's a direct enough line from the player to the publisher when communicating how damaging some of their policies are on their own customers. Developer studios listen, I know that for a fact, but somehow the wacky marketing and anti-piracy tactics are still implemented either at the production or publishing level.

Here I am, another victim of the "Unauthorized DLC" issue.

I want to complete DA:O so I can import my character in Awakening and Dragon Age 2. Until DA:O resumes working, I can't do that. I'm actually prevented from playing 3 different games, unless I want to create new characters (and nullify all of those carefully planned plot choices I made to influence future games story and in-game references).

I've been waiting since friday. Contacted technical support twice. It seems they gave around 20$ coupons to the angrier players (not me though, serves me right for having been nice and polite, I guess). This is so annoying: DA:O DRM always treated customers as if they were some kind of criminal monsters all bent on pirating the game, and now the DRM with its Online-Validation-Lets-Check-If-You-Are-An-Evil-Pirate is exactly what is preventing people from playing. This is absurd. Oblivion didn't have such a cumbersome DRM system, neither it had SecuROM or Starforce or similar s*ht - Oblivion just had a cd-check, easily cracked, and yet it was such a good game that people bought it in droves. "It's a good game, it deserves my money". So, treating your customers as if they WEREN'T callous criminals might actually help (i.e. authenticate just once.)

Goonling: I have to agree with Cfairy about smugness. Remember: people don't have to pay to play games, they could resort to piracy. "I want to try this game because I love rpgs, but I SO hate these people that I'll never give them a single dollar/Euro again". No, it's not my case, mostly because I'm a sucker for collectors editions, all the nice goodies, well written manuals, and such. But it could happen, if Bioware-Ea get a bad reputation for customer support and buggy games. Just saying.

The unforunate twist is when a stellar company, like Stardock, who champions the freedom to play their games and actively campaigns against DRM schemes gets hit like they did with Demigod. Day 1 of their servers going live for that game, they were swamped with over 65% of connection requests coming from illegitimate copies of their game - tens of thousands of players. Makes for a pretty convincing arguement to continue trying out different DRM types regardless of the backlash it brings.

It seems like an odd system for DLC to check for authorization EVERY time you log in. Once would do the job just fine I think. Great game other than that, though I really wish I hadn't bought it Saturday morning.

Why did they do this this way... You can borrow your friends copy of DAO UE on ps3 and own just a standard copy yourself, and after you install all his DLC off the disk it works fine, but no pc has to
authorize. I felt so bad after checking to make sure that worked that i went out and bought this game on pc only to not be able to play it. Now i wish i still had all the dlc on my ps3...

I feel like I've been working since last Friday. First identifying that the issue was not local (reinstalling, and troubleshooting files), then posting on Raen's original Post, then posting over the various threads the status of affairs and our findings, then more research and queues with EA Customer Service. And now that the official thread is out, just battling my internal impatience not necessarily for the need to play anymore, but for a slight Obsessive Compulsion to see this fixed after having spent additional money on DLC on Friday.

There is a bitter taste to this, the same feeling after breaking up with your partner. *Shakes fist* Maker be damned!

This is ridiculous. Why can't I play a game I bought over a year ago? This has been going on for days now? Seriously? Get your head out of your <censored> and fix this.

Hi, welcome to the Dragon Age support forums. I assume you're new here because you're just now asking this question.

Sadly, I have to agree.
Do you know that I can't play DA:O more than about 30 minutes straight without it crashing to desktop? The more I play, the more i.e. talking to NPCs takes longer and longer to load before the crash. It's unnerving to see sten in camp opening his mouth, then everything freezes for 3 seconds, then he resumes moving his lips and finally speaks.
Drivers update, updating to the latest patch, uninstalling and reinstalling, changing config options, nothing worked, the problem was never solved, now I just accept the inevitable crash while relying on quicksaves and autosaves.
Yes, this isn't the thread to speak of these problems, but since we're talking about what makes a customer think twice before buying another game from a certain company, well this is one factor. Not being able to play because of excessive or paranoid DRM is another factor...

With due respect Kruxik, please let's try to be more polite, by all means DO voice out your concerns, but it's a LOT more effective to get more voices expressing themselves politely than aggresive rants. (Ultimately it's up to you, but I just think it's a LOT more effective when the posts are intelligible and polite) - Just sayin'.
