I think an alternate way to start the quest is to simply find one of the evil tomes.

I don't recall those tomes ever showed up (and I play with the Tab key depressed so I should have at least seen the Chantry one I think).  Still, it's something to try.

For the record, the reason 'Bella wants you to kill her is because she tried to use her magic to take away your freedom, something that 'Bella prizes above all else.

I think the one in the Chantry is the first one I hit actually. But I think they open up instead after you kill off their writer. Miss over the top vocals Taronhe

But at the same time, just seeing her begging.... by then you've won. You're big and strong and immune to her powers, and she's helpless and literally shaking. You've got to have a heart of stone to just out-and-out kill her at that point. =D

She was playing you, dude. No need for Blood Magic there.

Idunna? The mage prostitute who tries you mind control you into slitting your own throat?

Yes, yes I did. And I slept well that night.

I killed her the first play-through (rogue) but let her live this play-through (mage).

I was surprised that letting her live gave me +5 rivalry with Isabella. I expected her to want me to be merciful towards Idunna.

Isabela is a big proponent of free will and the ability to make one's own choices in life, so it stands to reason that she would automatically loathe someone who tried to turn another person into a mindless thrall.
Edit: Beaten too it.
As for Idunna, I killed her almost every time. I have little sympathy for anyone who uses blood magic to control the actions of others. She might seem repentant now, but I have little doubt she'd try the same trick again at a later date.

I kill her every time. The woman tries to get my Hawke to cut his or her own throat...no way does she live.

I spared her because my Hawke was not going to be the guy who has to explain away a dead prostitute.

The first time I encountered her my F!Hawke Mage broke the spell & killed her instantly -- the next two times my F!Hawke Mage spared her life -- (I keep starting over because I am not happy with how the game is going, so I have seen her at least 3 times so far) -- oh & btw, in my latest game Karras is dead by this point.

Yes, my heart's black. Sometimes I give her to the Templars but usually she dies. She's a blood mage who tried to force me to kill myself. I don't see the downside of killing her.

The Tome quest starts for me by clicking on the book in the Keep, so, don't even need her for that ;-)

I let her live since she told me every single thing I wanted to know and seemed to repent, Denzing did not got the same treatment because he did not repented :-P

Was pleasantly surprised that she abandoned her bad ways for real.

I always stab her to death as Hawke. Now if it was my grey warden I'd never kill her

I usually let her live.

When I played my rogue, Anders was in my party and stopped her from being able to keep snaking her way into my character's mind. She was certainly pissed off about being controlled with blood magic. But Idunna sings like a canary after seeing Anders stop her magic. It find it hilarious. Then I just give her to the templars, death would be too merciful in my opinion, LET HER WASTE AWAY IN THE GALLOWS FOR ALL I CARE! And it also gives you the quest to destroy Tahrone's tomes and ex cetera.

Let her live. She did wrong, but begged for her life.

It depends. She's a threat to non-Mage Hawkes but her antics are pathetic compared to Mage Hawke.

My Diplomatic Warrior Hawke gave her a mercy kill after questioning her thoroughly.

My Charming Rogue Hawke slit her throat at the flick of the wrist because, well, it felt good.

My Charming Mage Hawke was just playing along to see what she was capable of, and after recognizing her as not a big threat, questioned her and gave her to the Templars. Hopefully they made her Tranquil.
