So, let's assume a few things for the sake of conversation:

1. That there *will* be a Dragon Age 3

and

2. For the sake of this thread, that all 7 available spots can be filled by companions from DAO, DAA, Amgarrak, Witch Hunt, and DA2, meaning we won't even begin speculating on new companions (or current 'acquaintances' who were not previously available as companions, i.e. someone like Cullen, or Cassandra)

3. Mhairi does not count...she really wasn't around long enough to really matter much.

4. Dogs will not count, neither will Snug, and instead will be utilized much the same way as the Dog was in DA2 (i.e. a summon)

5. Oghren and Anders can only count once, despite being in more than one game (or expansion, in Oghren's case). Also, Anders and Justice count as one character.

- Finn (there was something not quite right with him, seriously)
- Shale (impossible I know, but I miss her voice so much!)

- Cassandra Penteghast (so much potential!)

NB: I adore Aveline but I feel like her story shaped in a nice curve and don't need any closure with her. I also love Fenris but I can't see anything more to his story.

I don't mind any other characters really, but I DON'T want to see Oghren again (joke wore thin in Awakenings) or any more angry/irrational Dalish women.

I'll play. and disregard that inclusion of some characters would make little sense due to story reasons...

My picks would differ, though, depending on whether Hawke, Warden or new PC is the protagonist. I'd prefer all new companions for new PC, but in case of Warden or Hawke I think my "happy" party would be:

Morrigan ("sister")
Leliana
Loghain (grey warden)
Carver (grey warden)
Zevran (romance)
Varric
Shale (in her dwarf form)

Hawke:

Leliana
Loghain (grey warden)
Carver (grey warden)
Fenris (romance)
Anders/Justice
Varrick (bff #1)
Isabella (bff #2)

I'd maybe swap Loghain and Sten though... tough call. Loved both characters.

Aside from Isabela, Zevran and Shale, who are my favourites, I think Ariane, Finn, Sigrun and Bethany (also Carver) have potential for larger roles.

Now, if we're to break the team into Hawke's main party (this is assuming you play as Hawke to begin with), my team makeup would be:

IF Cullen is declared a companion for DA3, I'll gladly give Fenris' spot to him, even though I do adore the broody elf to bits. I mean... this is Cullen we're talking about. Maker knows the banter between him and Anders would be priceless. We also need more Anders/Justice/Nathaniel. This amount of awesome simply cannot be denied.

Apparently a rogue-heavy party, especially as my canon Warden and Hawke (so far) are both rogues. BUT HOW CAN I HELP IT THAT ROGUES ARE SUCH AWESOME CHARACTERS?!

Not that any of them will appear I think in DA3. Considering you can romance so many of them in DA2, who will go off with the champion, and then most of the DAO characters are stuck in defined roles (king, sister nightengale etc).

My picks:

Leliana: a canonized character. A big player in Orlais, the setting for DA3 I hear.
Sten: cannot be killed in origins (I believe), possible to survive the attack on lothering (example:Leliana)
Anders/Justice: if dead can possibly become Justice. Instigator of the mage-chantry war.
Sigrun: a legion of the dead dwarf with a perky attitude, she would be good to have around again.
Nathaniel Howe: I have my money on him returning as a companion sooner or later, do not know why.
Arianne: I imagine her to come back in DA3 with the book from WH, hunting elven legends and such.
Varric: unkillable DA2 storyteller. The developers would have to be madgisters not to include him.
